I just got myself me new computer. Built it. Works awesome.
Actually, I got it a few eeks ago, but I still haven't boasted the specs here. :D

CPU: AMD Athlon64 FX-55 2.66Ghz
RAM: 2048MB DDR400 PC3200
Hard Disk: 1x Seagate 400GB Serial ATA Drive
Optical Drive: Dual-Layer DVD+R/RW Burner
Video Card: ATi Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition 256MB DDR3

I have a gaming BEAST. :D

It's my soundcard that seems to be the problem. It's not a simple tweek of checkboxes, Niner, this is a hardware issue.

Well ya, onboard stuff is teh sux. Go out and drop a few more dimes and get a decent one that doesn't suck.

...Programming an own OS is quite easy (been there, done that)... The problem is programming an OS that actually does something usefull... :D

...When I'm programming X-stuff, I use X, of course (With thousands of xterms)... When I'm programming stuff for the console, I use the console... But I thought posting screenshots of the console isn't that exiting, but if you really want, I'll post some as soon as I get home...

...You don't have to pay for Cedega/WineX, you can download the CVS-Version for free... But it's unsupported and you'll have to compile it yourself (no problem for me)... And you really shouldn't look at the code, if you ever want to sleep again, it's horrible...

I do not pay for it. It's free if you compile it yourself (but without support for copy protection methods). You'll have to use no-cd-patches that way. But, hahaha, it couldn't care less, since I tend to use them anyway. I hate the sound of a high speed spinning CD drive.

It sucks that you no longer have the choice in whether you want sp2 or not, it usually screws people up who like to customize their computer with their own security stuff.

Windows is a perfectly fine operating system nowadays. After they started basing it after WinNT, that is. 2000 is probably Microsoft's best OS.

Didn't give me too much hassle. I disabled what I needed disabled and it hasn't complained since I told it not to.

...It may be their best OS, but that only means the Windozes before 2000 sucked so much more... :D

I don't mind Linux users. In fact, I speak to loads of them on a daily basis. But what really irritates me are those that feel the need to constantly pipe on about how superior it is to Windows.

Seriously, Linux is probably one of the most non user-friendly operating systems around. Even the GUIs that attempt to make it look remotely respectable are absolutely horrible, demonstrated to an epic degree in the screendumps in your first post, McCoy.

It looks way too ugly for the average user, and the extra level of "control" that you get with Linux is completely irrelevant for most people. Whilst I can appreciate that explorer is a fairly ugly shell, there are alternatives out there which completely piss all over anything that Linux has to offer.

Not only that, but Windows does pretty much anything that most users could ever want. Seriously, I cannot think of anything that I could possibly want in a computer that isn't already offered by Windows. If you can name anything, I'll quite happily change my opinion. Windows also has the huge advantage of being simple enough for people with minimal computer experience to install and use. If you think of that as a bad thing, you're a misguided tool.

I've no problem with people using alternative operating systems such as Linux, OSX, or any of the other *nix varieties out there. I just find it infuriating when those same people try to play the superiority card and make out that Windows is a genuinely bad operating system.

Hee, actually my grandma has successfully installed it. I was there just in case she managed to somehow screw it up, but she did it. I just had to rush her along at times by pointing out where to go, rather than giving her time to read the instructions properly. I have no doubt that she would have still gotten, it though. Certainly a lot easier than if she had used a Linux distribution.

As for your points, what? Why should Bill Gates' lies concern me? That's just being anal, since these "lies" (care to elaborate) haven't actively affected me at all. Trojans and virii? That's what antivirus programs are for -- I've not run into a single virus in years. If Linux were to enjoy the same popularity as Windows, it too would be infested with such programs. You currently have the benefit of the niche.

And Windows has nothing to do with the software I use. Adobe's Photoshop is never going to free, so I don't lose sleep at night over it not being. I don't really use any of Windows' programs, and the programs that I do use are generally available for free, just like they are with Linux. The only things I actually pay for are games, and the few "serious" programs such as Photoshop and Maya. Everything else is freeware.

I had my mother (no real computer experience) install and use SuSE... She had no problems, I showed her the menus and she got quite addictive to Frozen Bubble...
