Let's talk about music. Not the music we listen to, but just in general what music means to us. I had a deep discussion with my friend about it, but I can't quite remember what was said, but we came to a conclusion that what music means to people has seems to change generationally.

The new System of a Down album came out on Tuesday, and though they're not my favorite band, the way I feel about them is unlike my feelings for any other band. I hate singing along to music and I hate people to sing along to music, but on the way home today, my friends and I in the car were all singing along very loudly to Lost in Hollywood. And despite all the segregation in musical opinion, it seems to get fans of every genre to love them. There are some people I thought I'd never agree with musically that likes System of a Down as much as I do. My mother, a huge SOAD fan, says that the music brings back an excitement to her that she says hasn't gotten since Simon and Garfunkel. Though I cannot get as lost in the music as I can with other bands, and though I definitely wouldn't consider SOAD to be nearly as talented instrumentally as a lot of the bands I listen to, still their music brings out emotions in me no other bands do.

That's just my example. All of my friends listen to music, but they all listen to music for different reasons. What's your reason?

When the world just becomes too much for me, I like listening to music from certain Lucas Arts games.
The music takes me away from the real world and takes me to places I'd rather be.

Music stimulates my brain and helps me come up with new ideas. I got most if not all my inspiration from music, and it doesn't even have to be my favourite music.

I don't particularly like Briney Spears, but that song in which she sings "Oops, I did it again" is like drugs to my mind. Something in that song makes me want to start typing an international bestseller right away.

Other than that, music doesn't do much to me. I envy people who can say that music makes them feel relaxed and safe.

Oh, and I also hate to sing along to music, and I hate it even more when someone else does it.

I find music a great way to help myself to concentrate on doing things. I find it difficult to just sit somewhere and listen to music like a lot of people seem able to, but if I have it playing whilst I'm doing something else such as designing a website, playing Worms, or anything else that basically takes a chunk of my 100% attention to the music away, I find it just helps me be more productive.

I'm not one of those people who cannot help themselves from tapping a foot or head to music though, and certainly not one of those who feels the need to sing out aloud to the words of a song. A lot of the music that I listen to is orchestrial soundtrack music though, some of which is very inspiring. I work best with that stuff in the background.

I think Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody has a similair effect on people.

I remember I used to sit in front of my old 486 for hours at a time, playing Doom 2 with Nat King Cole, Al Jolson and Eddie Cantor playing in the CD drive. I was obsessed with that game.

Most modern music just makes me wanna hit musicians with my truck.

Music is a big part of my life. There's usally not a moment in a day where I'm either humming a tune or remembering a song in my head. I'm also one of those people who can't help tapping their foot to the beat.

Also, my love of jazz stemmed from the GF soundtrack.

My love of jazz stemmed from the GF soundtrack too! I got a site which tries to tab them out, check it out: The Blue Casket

I had always loved jazz, but GF really got me into the non-vocal stuff, i.e. Ellington and Miles Davis and Dave Brubeck and Dexter Gordon.

I still listen to the whole soundtrack of GF, and it's just amazing.

Music is my life, I don't know where I'd be without it. I mean it just takes me away to some other place. Not just during the bad times though, even when everything seems great, the music just complements it.

You got some good taste there, man. Here's my list of bands and artists I'd be dead without:

BANDS: Opeth, Neurosis, Alice Cooper, The Residents, Primus (as well most Les Claypool side-projects), Cream, Portishead, Orbital, System of a Down, Oingo Boingo, Lacuna Coil, Nine Inch Nails, Combustible Edison, Auf Der Maur, They Might be Giants, Tool and a few more

COMPOSERS: Angelo Badalamenti, Carter Burwell, Saint-Saens, Ennio Morricone, Danny Elfman

A few more words on the concept of music, in April my aunt who I was very close with died. When I first heard, I just shut my eyes and played "Swamped" by Lacuna Coil and just sort of got lost in it. It's like the music cleaned me....

Also if hasn't been mentioned, for those of us writers, nothing fuels writing better than music.
