Oblivion [warning: contains some spoilers]

Is anyone else looking forward to this game release? I love Bethesda Softworks.
Before I became obsessed with KoTOR I spent hundreds of hours playing Morrowind. I'm not kidding (Its kinda nice being a demi-god, long live Nerevar! :queen )

I was looking at the new screen shots and I really love the detail Bethesda puts into their games. With graphics like that, who would'nt want to live in Cryodyll?
That Minotaur is flipppin awesome!

Ooo I hope they release a construction set like they did for Morrowind.

Comments?

Biggest problem with Morrowind was that it failed to draw you into its story. I never felt as I was unravelling a mystery, I felt more like I was running around gathering weapons and armor and watching the nice scenery. Games like Knights of the Old Republic or Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines or Planescape: Torment, those games I played everytime I had 30 free minutes because I had to know what happened next, I HAD to unravel the mystery. Morrowind never did that for me. I NEVER played Morrowind because I had to know what happened next, not even once. It's not that the story was uninteresting, because it wasn't. The story was quite good, but the implementation of the story in the gameplay failed to complement each-other (as it should), the story was lost in the details of character-management. You either played the game or followed the story, you couldn't do both... Sure it's a free world and you can do whatever you want and you can go whereever you want, but that's only interesting for so long if there's nothing pushing you forward.
Besides finding out you are a god reborn, should have a bigger impact other than "Oh, ok...". *Points to the revelation Malak does to your PC on the Leviathan* as an example.

Now, Oblivion. It looks great, graphic-wise, kind of pale in its color-scheme (the kind of color-scheme that many MMORPGS use), the combat (what I picked up from the trailers and gameplay videos) looks rather "stiff" looks like the combat in Morrowind, I really hope they develop the combat more and make it more fluent.

So if Oblivion has the character-management of Morrowind, the size, a more fluent combat system and makes the story a part of the game - THEN it will be one of the best games ever! But it has a lot of work ahead.
Here's to hope, because it's one of the very, very few single player rpg-s to be released, in the near future.

I tried Morrowind, the gameplay sucked, the setting was too dark (its not my monitor), there was no GUI, so I didnt know what to do, the controls were sloppy, and there was no intro, so I had no idea why I was in a ship, or what was going on. So unless theres some outstanding reviews or the revamp the whole game system, Im not likely to buy it.

yeah same here I got killed by a DAMN FISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5 minutes into the game

ET Warrior 09-19-2005 11:19 AM

I have morrowind and the game of the year edition for Xbox, and I LOOOVE it. I'll admit that I'm a junkie when it comes to RPG's, but I really think morrowind was a good game, and character management and leveling was super sweet.

I'm deffinately getting Oblivion for the 360 when it releases.

Bastila 09-19-2005 01:50 PM

Where it said oblivion i thought of that ride at Alton Towers lol, if anyone knows what i mean .

Darth333 09-19-2005 02:11 PM

I loved the game and I'll get Oblivion for the PC as soon as it gets out. Sure, you can get lost and it's not story driven like Kotor but once you get into the Morrowind "world", it's quite fun to play but it's definitely not a game to play when you are in a hurry.

From what I see on the Oblivion website, the new game looks quite promising and this time they'll have a new AI system for the npcs: they sleep, go to church, and even steal items, all based on their individual characteristics. Full facial animations and lip-synching, combined with full speech for all dialog, allows NPCs to come to life like never before. .

This article about stealth, looks pretty good too: http://elderscrolls.com/codex/team_teamprof_emil.htm

Tanesh 09-19-2005 02:29 PM

I love Morrowind ... I'm still playing with my first character, and that since the English version was published in Germany back 2002. So you can say I played Morrowind for over 3 years, although I made breaks for KotOR, TSL, Republic Commando etc. :nut: And all the beautiful mods! :hearteye: The Reign of Fire mod made me continue playing MW after TSL. Just too cool riding your own big pet dragon and let it spit fire / poison / electric shockballs at your enemies! :D
But even without dragons, I'll get Oblivion as soon as it's published here. :)

Come on... Kotor's speech is what? 3GB (it's unintalled so i can't check)? oblivion would surely need 3-4 times as much as that... so we're talking a minimum of 9GB on you harddrive with only speech, then there's the engine, the construction kit... so it would end up with 12-18 GB total... that's a lot...

tk102 09-19-2005 05:56 PM

@montoir -- You'd rather read all the speech and lipsync like silent movie? :D Sounds great! I'm in Morrowind-mode right now -- switching to Oblivion will be a bumpless transfer. ;)

montnoir 09-19-2005 06:28 PM

Of course I want full voice-acting! That wasn't my point. I just doubt the game will be shipped on 4-5 dvd's.

Fuu 09-20-2005 12:39 AM

I dont care if its ten cds! With all the quests that were in MW I was impressed that so many characters were voiced in the firstplace..... you can talk to random people on the street and they actually have something to say other than just a pop up one liner.

I'm impressed by what theyre doing with the AI too. In MW they dust did or didnt like you based on your faction/race. In Oblivion the characters will have their own little lives, and if you dont watch out they might steal yours! Haaa

Also I kinda dug how it actually changed from day to night and back again. Dont ask me why but the whole "perma day" thing alot of games have annoys me. If its been a month how come I havent slept yet?

MW is not for the feint of heart..... and i doubt Oblivion will be much diffrent.... Haha when I first played MW I got so pissed because I kept dying. Once I built up a few skills the game was more enjoyable. I loved the huge amount of potions you could make/buy/steal/find in a random log. (Alchemy....Wooot!)

After spending hundreds of hours on MW Im sure I'll pick up the interface of Oblivion really quick.......I cant wait...been savin my pennies.

Thaeos 09-21-2005 08:07 AM

Morrowind is a wicked game, one of the best I've ever played ... still haven't finished though heh ... I read this thread and was like "I'm a freaking god?!" ... oh well. With all the mods out there now like the graphical updates and a whole lot of expanded towns and quests and new features like being able to mine and smith your own weapons and stuff it is really huge. Even more than it was already. Heh plus the two expansions.

Anyway Oblivion looks to be awesome as well, aside from the graphics which are top-notch. Too bad my pc is too crap to play it hehe...

Considering games are getting heavier in graphics and all, it wouldn't be that uncommon to see games getting around that size in the near future.

That said, I like a lot of the shots I've seen of Oblivion, not sure if it's something I'll get though.

I'm copying you! :xp:

I started about a week ago. I bought the Game of the Year Edition which has the game and add-ons. Though I know it's going to take forever for me to get through them (damn rats.. I swear they're on steroids :fist: ) ... I'm hoping Oblivion will be a seamless transfer... :D

I have to say I'm glad ppl were mentioning this game here and around the Forums. I think I might have found another all-time favorite to add to the list :emodanc:

Though as mentioned... the controls need some getting used to coming from NWN & KotOR Series. Seems the spacebar won't pause my game no matter how bad I'm getting whipped (old habits die hard) :nut: ... that & I can kill a vampire no problem, but getting pwned by a freakin' rat biting my ankles as I'm running is just un-acceptable.. hehehe

Fuu 10-01-2005 04:51 AM

Yeah those rats have sharp teeth...I loved setting em on fire sqeeeeee! OO the GotY Edition is my fave loved the Tribunal expansion. If you think the rats are bad wait til you see creepies in the sewers, hehe they remind me of ratghouls only a tiny bit smarter. Then again I usually just levitated over them anyway so..........

Woot MW was soo addicting, I know I'm going to get competely sucked into Oblivion.

On a side note I think its funny a rat can bite you as you run away... I mean if somone was trying to kill you would they stop <trying to kill you> if you started running? Theyd probably just try to stab you in the back hahaha.

I'm glad im not the only one impressed by Bethesda's work. I can say one thing they put a LOT of attention to detail in their games..... pcrpg will never be the same.

I wonder if the Mages Guild will make an appearance in Oblivion.

Astrotoy7 10-01-2005 06:13 AM

hmm...as much as I like NWN, ive never gotten to around to playing Morrowind...are they similar, what are the main difefrences...

and getting killed by a fish sucks :(

Rogue15 10-01-2005 07:20 AM

i used to play that for hours...i remember when i first got it, i didn't do anything but play it. :D goooooooooooooooooood memories. I have the GOTY, but haven't managed to get too far in it. too busy. =\ i can't wait for Oblivion though!

SITHSLAYER133 10-01-2005 07:59 AM

i played morrowind but it was one of those games thats just litraly to big and huge for me to get lost in and because of the freedom i just never felt compelled to do anything in it cause me likes more of a story line and a bit more structure

If you want some mods recomendations, let me know :) Last time I played I had over 200 mods installed (I had to merge quite a few files to make this compatible hehe)

Fuu 10-01-2005 09:24 PM

OMG Sweeeeeeetttttt. Patrick Stewart is doing voices for Oblivion! So is Sean Bean, and Terrence Stamp. :drool1: Now I know the VO is going to be good.....
See this is just another reason why I cant wait for Oblivion.....want it to be xmas right now!
Check the Oblivion site for more info........
Fuu

lukeiamyourdad 10-01-2005 10:04 PM

\o/ Awesome! Patrick Stewart has one of the greatest voices ever (though I never got around him souding british instead of french in Star Trek).

The graphics make my computer cry. I'll see if I can run it before buying it.

REDJOHNNYMIKE 10-02-2005 01:28 AM

I thought it looked sweet for the 360, but I've never played the others, does it have the kind of story that will confuse the crap out of you if you haven't played the whole series?

Fuu 10-02-2005 01:38 AM

Nope all of the Bethesda game are similar in theme but have completely unrelated storylines. Each one is a stand alone world <a huge one I might add.....at least it was with MW>.

If you have any good mods to recommend (or mod sites for that matter), please tell. :)

First time I got Morrowind a few years ago the game crashed every time I tried to exit the door of the first building on the docks where you start, so I sold it again just as quick. But after reading this thread and feeling a bit starved for new RPGs (and since they almost pay you to buy it nowadays) I thought I'd give it another chance. :)

I can't speak for Oblivion but MW. You don't play MW for the story, you play it for the games-mechanics (and I'm not talking about gameplay because the gameplay is... weak). You will not understand anything about the storyline, not because you haven't played the previous games, but because the story-progression, story-presentation is so weak and horrible that after a while you just won't care. As I said, you don't play these games for the story (read my first post near top of the page).

As I said the story isin't related to the other games. Bethesda even said they do this on puropse. I didnt play any of the other games , and I had no problem understanding the main quest storyline. On that note I doubt you'll see any of the same characters <or even hear about them > from Morrowind in Oblivion. In my opinion the storyline in morrowind was fine. It was'nt as in-depth as the main quest storyline for games like TSL or KoTor, but there are so many faction quests and random places to explore! They left it so open so you could choose to be whatever you want and do whatever you want. Dont want to complete the main quest thread? Dont have to. This is simply a matter of opinion, but I dont really think the MW storyline sucked.

Who would'nt want a giant cat for a girlfriend?

On another note: Yesh D333 help us out! Heh I played morrowind ALOT and I did <almost>all of it w/o mods.........Darn....now I have to go back and play it again.

T7nowhere 10-02-2005 04:32 PM

Oblivion looks great, I've been keeping an eye on this games since it was announced. The only problem with the graphics that I can see is that they look to good, I have to wonder how modders are going to improve on that ;).

I've been a fan of Morrowind Since the first screens I saw before it was released. I've played through that game with atleast 6 characters, once you get to level 50 it gets pretty boring ( walking around with no clothes on killing Demi gods isn't fun for very long ;) )

I Played through again last year before Xmas, I don't have it installed now but I saved my fav mods, but Darth333's 200 beats my 90.

The mods I would reccomend as must haves are :
All of the Official Dev plug-ins
Better bodies new skin mesh's. huge improvment over the the games models.

A great mod hunting resource is TELESPHOROS' LIST o'MODS

These mods can all be found at Morrowind Summit: http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/modcontrols/mods.asp
RealSignposts
Scrollsv1.1 or Scrolls icons(sorry not certain
Vivec_Expansion_v1.1
Balmora Expansion v1.4
Windows Glow: adds alittle color to the cities at night.
Npc Replacer 3.50 (there could be a newer version ;) all this one does is change the heads of the npc's to add more variety ( I think you need Better bodies installed)

Enchantment Color De-Enhancer (reduces the strenth of the enchantment shader)
OR
No-Glo( eliminates the enchantment shader)

This is not a mod but is very helpfull if you want to make some potions but are not sure what ingredients you need. http://morrowind.melian.cc/potionmachine/

And here are some modders personal sites:
http://www.deffeyes.com/morrowind/index.html
http://canadianice.ufrealms.net/Morrowind/Index.html

Sorry I would have more but my morrowind knowledge is outdated again ;)

REDJOHNNYMIKE 10-03-2005 01:47 AM

Hmm, I might get it if it's one of the launch titles,
The only real reason I was interested was because of the graphics in screenshots,
I just kept thinking "why can't KotOR look like this"

ChAiNz.2da 10-03-2005 12:19 PM

Yah, I have the "Better" line of mods (Bodies, Beasts & Heads), Real Signposts, the NPC replacer (still at v3.5), No-Glo (weapons looked way too much like plastic wrap for my tastes)... the Ranger's Tent which is completely awesome (portable "house" with storage) & the Giant's line of mods (giants, dragons, etc.)...

Also, I've got Vampire's Embrace & Werewolf Evolution, but have yet to be infected by either to see if I got the merge to work right ;)

One thing about Holowan, explaining the user-made Tools (not MW's Construction Set) and how to use them is much more 'friendly' here... took me forever to to learn MW's user mod tools. Learning how to 'clean' them, merge them, level list, blah blah.. was all Greek to me and almost more intimidating to try and learn them.

I have all the great folks here to thank for strengthening my skillset to understand MW's stuff ;) Thanks Guys/Gals :D

T7nowhere 10-03-2005 01:26 PM

I tired that Giants mod in my last play through, but I had to remove it because of several quite horrible creature models included with it. my enjoyment of the game was being dragged down by that one, there was another reason why I removed but I don't need to mention it here. if you like that mod then that great. Just be aware that if you want to remove it you will get a ton of error messages calling for missing models and textures, it won't damage the save but it took me like 20 minutes to click through all the errors and resave the game.

I never tried that portable tent though it seemed to much like cheating, although I did make my own Packguar fast travel system to fill in some long distance hikes on the Island. If you can believe it I got tired of using my 400+ levatate potions that would last a couple game days. With high enough intelligence you can make anything uber in the game.

Thanks for the heads up T7. Yah, I "ran into" one of the Mountain Trolls last night and frankly the model (or perhaps the horrid skin), well ...it blew... hehehe... ;)

I did an .ini hack and recovered the "Yes To All" button on the GUI though ;) Should take a few seconds to "clean" it with that little treasure :D

I am enjoying the alchemy system though... my potions tend to outdo anything I could ever buy, plus it gives me a reason to "explore" the scenery and go ingredient hunting (buying them is way too.. meh)...

Sorry all for the "diverted topic", but with the mention of Oblivion (which I'm definitely looking forward to now).. I thought it might be best to keep the MW stuff together. Seems there's renewed interest in the game this thread caused.. hehehe

One thing I've yet to be able to find reference to however... is there a Level Cap in this game? Come to think of it... is there a cap on anything such as Abilities, etc.?? My character is leveling like mad (because I'm using my major skills alot) but I know I haven't even scratched the surface of this game... I'd hate to find out I'll cap without even finishing half of the game ;)

Fuu 10-03-2005 02:59 PM

I didnt really see any level cap in MW. Seems like there should be as there comes a point when you can pretty much waste anyone in the game <including Vivec> without blinking an eye........Once I got those spiffy swords from Tribunal I found that I quickly tired of killing anything weaker than a vampire....... Fighting the fabricants was fun as heck though.

Yeah they alchemy was my fave thing to use...fighting with swords get boring after awile.

I'm glad that this thread has been so popular...hehe everyone thoulght I was a total freak for plaing MW so much....good to know Im not alone in my freakyness...haha

Darth333 10-05-2005 12:38 PM

The sites and mods listed by t7 are pretty good. Better bodies is definitely a plus.

Another site I like for mods is this one: http://www.thelys.org/index.php

Note that some of the mods below conflict but with a little bit of patience, conflicts are generally easy to solve with the toolset. One thing you have to know is that mods are loaded according to their time stamp and sometimes, just changing this can fix compatibility issues. I have a small utility at home that allows you to change the time stamp of any file in a few clicks. I don,t remember the name but I'll verify and post a link later on.

Warning: people with low end systems may experience slowdowns if they install too many mods adding new npcs and towns.

ChAiNz for the vampire mods, Vampire's Embrace is pretty good - makes the vampire experience more interesting as the original one it is pretty boring as no one talks with you - but I like to combine it with Vampire Realism: http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/m...asp?modid=2404

With some races or after a certain point in the game, you can't really get infected normally so you may need an item to give you 100% weakness to disease. I made one if you need it. Note that if you pick the quarra clan, the quest is bugged. I have a patch too but I suggest another clan anyways.

My favorite heads: http://home.wnm.net/%7Ebgriff/MW_Home.html (included in better bodies if I remember well)

If you are looking for side quests, the Constance and Laura Craft (nothing to see with Lara Croft) companion mods and the The White Wolf Of The Lokken Mountain are pretty good: http://lovkullen.net/Emma/quests.htm. The children of Morrowind mod is also excellent but it's more for atmosphere than anything else. It looks like you can also have your dog or cat now but I didn't tried those mods.

There's another excellent side-quest mod but since it has adult oriented themes I won't post a link here . I can PM it to you if you want (or anyone else who has the legal age). It's a 394 meg download.

Nice armors - the Knights of Tamriel armors can be acquired through mini quests: http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/m...remy%20McGuinn (the nicest armors I saw on the net - there are a couple pages - check them! )q

If you look for houses, the houses here are nice and cosy but not out of proportion: http://www.morrowind-mod.com/Abu%20M...formation.html

If you want to go extravagant, then Solsteim Castle is for you: http://korana.elricm.com/Housing.htm :p It's pretty well done. Even if youa re not a fan of huge houses, when you get bored, give it try.

And finally, if you like to be able to cook, get drunk, make weapons etc:

the COmplete morrowind mod is more oriented towards crafting: http://www.elricm.com/nuke/html/modu...etails&lid=470
or
Necessities of morrowind is more oriented towards "real life" stuff such as obligation to eat, sleep, you can also get drunk and end up being caught in a bar fight :p http://www.thelys.org/mods.php?a=Taddeus_and_Nymeria
(I use this one but with some modified some features)

If you made a fighter character and do not intend to invest to much in lockpicking skills, Lock Bash Enhanced allows you to open doors and such by bashing into them: http://www.thelys.org/mods.php?a=The..._Bash_Enhanced

Edit: I forgot the Reign of Fire mod which adds dragons to the game: http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/m...asp?modid=4548 - you can even ride them :D

and Morrowind comes Alive which adds tons of new npcs to the game: http://www.rpgplanet.com/morrowind/m...asp?modid=2235, including people you can hire.

There's no level cap. You can raise your attributes normally up to 100 but you can also get some bonuses at some places to raise them higher.

And btw, about Oblivion, anyone saw this? http://www.fileplanet.com/157380/150...-%5B20-Mins%5D

ChAiNz.2da 10-05-2005 12:56 PM

WOW! Thanks Darth333:D

Of course, I play mostly a Rogue type character in any RPG... so I made a Custom Class (a better rogue/agent called "The Wayward") right off the bat starting Morrowind. I can pick a 100 level lock like it was child's play.. not getting caught however is a different story .. hehehe (telekenisis kicks arse)...

I'll look into the other mods you mentioned, though now I'm torn because I'd like to get through the add-ons relatively soon before/after the Oblivion release. But again, I'mnot going to sacrifice my gaming experience just to beat a timeline.. I'm patient enough ;) hehehe...

Yeah! I saw the footage last night and was amazed! Oblivion is going to be Super-Sweet!

RevanA4 10-06-2005 10:11 PM

this looks like a vast improvement over the last one

Derc 10-06-2005 10:23 PM

I easily spent 100+ hours on morrowind. I loved it so much(got the GotY edition for Xbox). However, my only regret was that I was never able to complete it fully. But me, being a completist and perfectionist, just never got the chance to finish(I restarted too much). :(

I'll definitely be picking up Oblivion though. :)

RevanA4 10-06-2005 11:31 PM

I might actaully get this one I only got the last one cuz it came with my last grapics card and it I played for 5 minutes and got tired of it

*runs away*

Arise ancient thread ..."Arise!"...

Well, rather than start a new thread for this game, since I only have a tid-bit of info on it..

Bethesda Thanks tk! ;) finally released Oblivion's system requirements :emodanc:

Start saving your pennies cuz' this game is hungry for some major processing if you want their "Recommended Requirements" Otherwise, looks like it's going to be 'playable' with human-level specs.. still.. I can only imagine what this game will be like if you do have the recommended :D
