Work in Progress: GF-inspired city
I'm new to this forum, so first of all; Hey!

I found my old Grim Fandango-discs the other day, and remembered how great that game was. I tried to get the game to work again, but unfortunately it wouldn't... Anyway, it really inspired me to model a 3D-city Grim Fandango style, and here is the beginning of my work. I am now continuing with building more houses, and then I'll start to add textures and set up some lights, then render it properly. If I'm still inspired, in the end I'll possibly even model a few skeletons (including Manny maybe?) and create an animation. Could be fun. Anyways, here's the start. And I would love to hear what you people think so far. What could be better? What do I need more of?

(And by the way guys: I'm really impressed there is still a relatively popular Grim Fandango community around, almost 10 years after the game was released. Says alot about the quality of that product!)

The modeling on this looks excellent. Truthfully, there is little to nothing I can add without the textured model (which I am excited to see)

EDIT: I would like to see a top-down picture, so I can get a better idea of where everything is situated.

very clean so far! You could add some more details to the buildings later on, or do you want to use shaders for the most of things?

Thank you. Are any of you into 3D modeling yourself? I don't have my models or 3D software availible for the next couple of days, but I'll get you a screenshot from a top view perspective then :)

And I want to add more geometry later, Sallim, but I also want to use shaders to add details. I haven't really worked with textures in 3D before, so that will be a new challenge for me. I'm mainly doing this project for practice, as I'm pretty new with 3D, so don't expect anything really great. :P

Hey Petter, yeah I am into some 3d modeling, but just simple stuff, never got any further. I was aksing about the shaders because, you could leave your city like this ( maybe add more buildings...) but not modeling with high polycounts, but instead using shader effects. I saw one video once; the modeling was really low poly, but the shader effects made it look so great, alot of details and real.

I am looking forward for some new screenshots! hey it is maybe mainly for practice, still it looks great so far :D

seriously though, if we can get enough dedicated people, here's an example of what can be done

these guys are going to release a FREE game using a Freespace 2 mod, and if you take a look at the demo the game play quality is amazing! hell, forget about waiting for GF2 , LET MAKE IT! (making a clever story however, that's the challange)

Yeh i am definetly going to get into 3d programming i am going to be doing that at uni in 2 years time
