I thought the rebel had become the new republic, and former empire loyalists were the rebels now

Well from the Remnant's point of view, they are the legitimate power, and you are the "rebels." So I guess it's just their fanaticism speaking... the war isn't over, they're still fighting and hope to win!

And in the Expanded Universe, the scales of power are pretty precarious, and so the Empire "wins" many more times before they finally make peace and the two powers join forces to fight the "new alien threat" or whatever garbage (see the "New Jedi Order" series that many old school fans have written off).

I've lost much of my taste for the EU, if you couldn't tell, but I do appreciate the good games it has given us!
