What is your favourite adventure game location?

Mine's Woodtick, by a big margin! In fact... Woodtick makes me wish I was born 400 years ago. This is probably why I've been so critical of the special editions, I'm terrified of what they might do to Woodtick. So far so good though.

Also have a soft spot for Rubacava, but never go there anymore because I'd have to do an awful lot of keyboard-controlled bumping-into-everything-and-pulling-my-hair-out (others call it walking around) to get there. Which just isn't going to happen.

Threepwood4life 05-28-2010 04:58 AM

Its a tie between Woodtick and Blood Island for me.

Snugglecakes 05-28-2010 05:35 AM

Ok I must say Blood Island is awesome. Woodtick takes first place in the MI world though. I'm sure that one day I'll be on the couch and have to admit that sometimes I just go there to walk around and look and listen. Am I mad? In all probability... yes.

Rosefull 05-28-2010 01:23 PM

I'd like to live on Plunder Island. That place just seems perfect for me. I love fried chicken, there's a nice classy beach club, Haggis looks like the kind of guy who could tame my unruly hair, and to top it all off, there's a theater! (even if it's a lousy one) I'm kind of a die-hard actor and Shakespere fanatic. And I even love snakes.

The reason I chose a Monkey Island location is because of my long-standing belief that I was meant to be born a 17th-century pirate. I love everything about pirates. The outfits, he sea, the treasure, the adventure, the swordfighting, the grog, etc., etc. And a 17th-Century pirate complete with pop-culture referances? How perfect is that.

Wow, I put a lot of thought into this. 0_o

Snugglecakes 05-29-2010 01:36 AM

Hehe! Yeah I agree, I'd love to be walking around in the Monkey Island universe. Even if these paths all look the same...

Of course we'll just gloss over the hardship, violence, disease etc from the period! And no internet. But at least there's grog.

urluckyday 05-29-2010 03:03 AM

Land of the Dead...even though that place was a virtual limbo...it was still pretty cool!

Thrik 05-29-2010 10:17 AM

Rubacava wins by far for me. That place drips with so much atmosphere and it's full of great characters too.

God damn. 10 seconds of this and I'm in the mood for digging GF out for a play now. :~

Oh yeah, I forgot about the no-internet thing. Well, I'd find a way to entertain myself, haha.

N3mo 05-30-2010 10:18 AM

The entire Rubacava set makes me want to stop the adventure and stay there.
And Blood Island too.

SurplusGamer 05-30-2010 10:34 AM

I can't disagree with any of the choices already made. I'd also like to put in a word for the swamp/voodoo hut in MI2, though.

Jenni 05-30-2010 11:09 AM

My favorite adventure game location is the Edison mansion. I'd love to be able to explore more of it. I bet there's even more hidden rooms than we've been shown. :D

Sven_Q45 05-30-2010 01:20 PM

I think the Edison mansion, too, cause Dott is my favorite adventuregame. But don´t detect me on it!

@Thrik
Yes the atmosphere is very cool!

@N3mo
It don´t want to stop the game on it. I do it! :D

The slutty librarian's desk in Leisure Suit Larry 7.

I change my vote to this...I wish I could wear Manny's tux all the time btw...

Aububuh 05-31-2010 12:56 AM

I think that Atlantis from Fate of Atlantis is my favorite, mostly because of the incredible atmosphere. You really feel like you're in an abandoned city that nobody has touched for centuries, and it really builds up the suspense for the climax, and then all that stuff happens that I won't spoil for anyone who's never played it.

As for someplace I'd want to live, I would have to go for Rubacava. I know it's been said before, I just think it would be a really cool place to be.

Kroms 05-31-2010 03:52 AM

Live? Puerto Pollo.

That I admire? Almost all choices made in this thread (aka all the choices from the games I've played). I also think both Bladehenge and Deathspank's world (it seems pleasant!) are cool, though they're not adventure games.

JezzaTheLagomorph 05-31-2010 05:44 AM

I love New York City in Sam & Max: The Penal Zone, because it feels so much like a city and it's so much like how I imagine New York to be (I've never actually been there). It's so grimy and dirty, there's always things going on in the background (mostly rats). I know it's not a classic (yet) but there's something about Sam & Max's New York.

gos 05-31-2010 03:27 PM

Pureto Pollo !

the music, the view....amazing

don_quixote 06-02-2010 02:54 AM

No votes for Melee Town? Tsk tsk... I think that was the first time I 'got' how important atmosphere was to a game. Although the whole of Melee Island was just wonderful. I love Puerto Pollo as well, and just the general 'feel' of Blood Island.

N3mo 06-03-2010 03:39 PM

Speaking of nice locations, one year ago I was trying to make an April Fool (Monkey3 Special Edition, yeeeeah!!) transforming the Goodsoup Hotel in some kind of Tiller's 2.5D and repainting the screen. I gave up cause I'm not so good in lights dynamics and 3D and stuff. Mission failed.

Gabez 06-03-2010 03:53 PM

Difficult to just chose one... I want to mention the islands in Loom though, since nobody has mentioned them yet. So magical.

Thrik 06-03-2010 04:56 PM

Nide work N3mo! Though it's once again reminded me just how tedious I find 3D modelling. :~

Tell me about it.

Client: We just need a simple aerial view of a city scene with some cars and stuff happening
Me: Sure thing

2 weeks later... still sitting here... living on toast

The Labirinth of Knossos from Fate of Atlantis.

Rosefull 06-06-2010 07:42 PM

Hey, I like the redone Goodsoup Hotel! I wouldn't call that a failure.

Actually that was just the beginning of the redone, I didn't finish it. Thank you anyway.

Icebox 06-15-2010 02:26 PM

I like the mellow aura exuded from Folsense in Layton 2. It feels like such a dreamlike, cordial place. Old photographs fade, dustily mouldering in the candlelight of antiquated shops. Sombre working men sweep the streets, forgotten divas fret in the warm lamplight of closed clubs, and at its center, the murkily luminous windows of a museum greet the traveler. Such a well-drawn, thickly atmospheric town.

whipwarrior 06-18-2010 07:41 AM

The ruins of Knossos in Fate of Atlantis has always been my favorite adventure game location. I spent so many hours of my youth exploring those chalky, vacant Minoan ruins with Indy and Sophia. Too many hours? Probably. But that 256-color rendition of Crete captured my imagination like no other locale in the game, and imbued me with a desire to really travel there someday, if only to savor the simple experience of standing by the horns of consecration (dressed as Indy), and say: "Here we are in the ruins of Knossos." :)

Thrik 06-18-2010 08:05 AM

Did you ever get to go then? I did once. A most cool place. :)

whipwarrior 06-18-2010 09:56 AM

No, I haven't been to Greece yet, but I am planning a trip there in a few years with my best friend, Jaimee. And yes, I am definitely packing my Indy outfit! :thmbup1:

Sven_Q45 06-27-2010 05:47 PM

I was on Crete. But not in the ruins. I was too young and didn´t interested in that. But after playing Indy 4...

ThunderPeel2001 06-27-2010 05:53 PM

For me it must be Melee Island, simply because that's the first place I fell in love with.

Huz 06-28-2010 04:29 PM

Hah. This thread is amazing. When I first opened it I expected to see a poll, and I would have chosen Rubacava and moved on. But as I progressed through the thread, having been forced to actually READ other people's choices, I couldn't help but agree with each person in turn! Blood Island, fantastic! Plunder, a great location, even if it isn't dark and moody. Woodtick... not so much - give me Melée Island any day.

What would I go for in the end? Probably still Rubacava, but the other choices are excellent contenders. I'd like to give an honourable mention to the desert in Full Throttle, near the mink ranch. There's not much to it but it's brilliantly realised.

Sk-F 06-28-2010 08:24 PM

Creta Island on Indy Atlantis! It always gives me that sense of calmness :)

That's why I don't really like polls... this is more interesting :thmbup1:

whipwarrior 06-29-2010 12:44 PM

Yes, Crete is a very calming locale. Sometimes I will put the game on just for the background music while I read or write. It still frustrates me how they have ripped almost every song from the game soundtrack except for my absolute favorite—the Crete ruins theme (which first appears in the basement of Caswell Hall where Indy finds the horned idol at the beginning of the game). I would kill to have an MP3 of that song, which loops wonderfully, by the way, and provides a very soothing effect.

By the way, the first pic of Indy and Sophia on the dock is actually Thera, while the bottom pic is, of course, Crete.

sinus 06-29-2010 03:22 PM

s-island claims completeness. maybe it's there somewhere? track 21 maybe?

s-island 06-29-2010 03:52 PM

Track 21 contains at least one playthrough of every cue that plays when you're wandering around the ruins of Crete and Thera. The game goes through a MIDI file with several cues and plays them in a random order while you walk around. There's also an unusued cue in the MIDI file which is the Iceland theme with an instrument change. Maybe they intended to use it in Caswell Hall when you go up to the attic or somewhere in Crete... I included it as track 40.

Track 22 is the music that plays when you use the land surveyor equipment to find the X.
Track 25 is the music that plays when you hang around Thera Harbor long enough and not the rest of the island.

whipwarrior 06-29-2010 06:42 PM

No... still not the one I'm thinking of. The theme occurs when you revisit the boiler room anytime after the opening credits, or if you stand in the mural room on Crete, and also periodically when exploring the ruins of Knossos.

It's like: dun *DUN*... dun dun dun dun.... etc.

It's hard to type out a musical theme, but that's the best I could do. Perhaps its destined to only be enjoyed in the game. The problem with a lot of the extracted MIDIs is that the re-instrumentation changes the way the music sounds. I do quite enjoy Bart Klepta's Crete dance mix, though! :thmbup1:

wannabe_pirate 06-30-2010 11:44 AM

Before I opened this thread, I couldn't wait to add Rubacava, Thera from FOA, and Blood Island to the list... looks like I was a little late!

FOA had quite a few locations that really left an impression on me with their atmosphere. I have very nostalgic memories of Iceland, Tikal, the Azores... even though they were basically one-screen areas.

Least favorite of all time? definitely Monkey Island in MI4... the entire island was reduced to a few paths, with a boulder dropping game and a depressing, repetitive log ride for a milk bottle. It felt so empty and forced.
