Silly (Former) Chemistry Nerd Questions

Back when I was in college, I used to study this stuff, but I've forgotten...

2. "Silicon and oxygen make concrete, bricks, and glass..." Glass? Really? How?

Having the minor variant of Thalassaemia, I'm prone to bouts of Iron deficiency - I could do with that Tshirt when there's no steak around :D
