Do you have a smartphone?

With electronic media becoming more advanced each day, everyday people now have access to what was once reserved for businessmen in expensive suits. How many of you have smartphones? And just how many of you are smart enough to use it for anything beyond Facebook? :xp:

mimartin 03-19-2011 11:38 PM

Yes, but I got it for games. :xp:

acdcfanbill 03-20-2011 02:21 AM

Nope, they are D. U. M. dumb! also, expensive time/money wasting objects :P

Darth Avlectus 03-20-2011 02:23 AM

WHAT is a smartphone?

I don't like cellphones. Period. I only got one from NET10 once b/c of emergencies. When you have inconsiderate people that call you at all hours it tends to piss you off. Or people you don't want to be in contact with you 24/7. I let it die and good riddance.

I hear all about how a company requires it of you. It's only really because they want to continue to make you work UNCOMPENSATED while at home.

You're getting all hot and bothered at 11:30PM on a friday and about to get jiggy with your current squeeze, then you suddenly get that dreaded ring/text from your employer "I'm going to need you to do this, that and the other thing, and have that all that done tonight before you come in early tomorrow, mmkay? Yeah that would be great."

It's like "WTF is this crap?" straight out of an "Office Space" nightmare on meth and steroids.

This.

Pho3nix 03-20-2011 06:15 AM

I like to keep my cellphones simple... I don't like the idea of cramming EVERYTHING important into one device you're reliant on. I keep my music player and phone separate for that reason.

Astor 03-20-2011 07:23 AM

Voted no. I think they are dumb, but also a little too expensive for a glorified phone.

And I can access Facebook, Twitter, E-mail, News, and even LF on my non-smart phone.

Miltiades 03-20-2011 09:19 AM

I'm not addicted to Facebook, Twitter and other stuff that I'd need something so I could access it all the time. Really, I only need a cellphone to call or text people, nothing else.

Darth InSidious 03-20-2011 09:37 AM

I have a semi-smartphone that I use for making calls, and connecting my (decidedly elderly) Palm to the internet. The Palm gets used for the organising and facebook-style stuff.

LordOfTheFish 03-20-2011 10:06 AM

I have one but I only have it for recreational purposes. It's outdated and discontinued anyway so it's no better than a flip phone.

Jeff 03-20-2011 01:06 PM

I'll be getting one once I get out of school and get a job, right now I don't want to pay for the data plan.

Sabretooth 03-20-2011 01:15 PM

I'm a smartphone.

purifier 03-20-2011 01:31 PM

Well, sometimes I'm a smartass on the phone. :ninja2: Does that count?

I guess I'm too old fashioned otherwise, because I rather use landline phones and Ham radios.

Liverandbacon 03-20-2011 03:34 PM

My personal phone is nice and simple. It is compact, can text and call. All I want or need. Work-supplied phones have varied. Many have been smartphones. Call me a Luddite if you must, but I prefer more basic phones.

Darth333 03-20-2011 06:28 PM

I have one but I use it mainly for business: it makes the briefcase much lighter. It's also practical when you need to get a specific info during a meeting.

Just leave it in the car (not your current squeeze, the phone :xp:) and pretend the battery had to be recharged...all this while you "recharge" (or discharge) yours else elsewhere...

Anyway, I still prefer to be uncompensated at home than at the office: this tool allows me to leave the office at "human" time (there is no compensation for professionals here). I still do the car trick though...especially since I have to pay for the plan.

ChAiNz.2da 03-21-2011 10:39 AM

Love my phone (iPhone). I use it for everything. Mostly for work.. but I admit there is a copy of Angry Birds and Facebook on it :xp:

Take it, rather than a notebook, to all of my creative meetings. All notes of upcoming projects are with me at all times since (like D3) I'd rather be uncompensated at home rather than chained to my edit suite. Plus.. all of the kewl tools are at my house.. hehehe. Having the project notes with me 24/7 is great. Being linked with a Dropbox server at work and home allows me to take my clips everywhere I go.

Have a few apps for Final Cut as well which has been a godsend. Have an app for doing rough cuts, papercuts and storyboards. Have apps for some photo and still work as well. A great convenience for me and my line of work. Beats having to trudge over to my desktops just to spit out a 30sec rough cut. Plus I can stream the stuff wirelessly using airplay to our huge-gantic displays.

Granted, I'm a mac guy, and my home & workplace is mac oriented.. so the iPhone was an excellent choice for me. I have friends with Droids and Blackberries and some of the stuff they can do is astounding as well. So no matter what your niche is.. smartphones offer much more than tetris & bejeweled nowadays.. hehe

Love mine.

Mav 03-21-2011 08:46 PM

I voted, Yes I use it for work, but actually it's more like I use it at work so I can read my daily news during breaks. Stuff like Kotaku, Joystiq and porn.

That would not have flew. But I was looking for the reason/excuse to not come back.

Hmm? What are you implying D3? :dev8:

EDIT: I hope saber isn't jealous! :D

Maybe now I might agree being somewhat self employed.

I was sort of framing it in a past job but in a now sitch. Back then I wasn't on my own time unfortunately. It was just the boss' way of avoiding paying his workers overtime while still tightening the noose. So I left instead when the cyclical seasonal period ended in cutbacks.

Still, I won't get a smartphone. Gives the outside world too much access.

Lynk Former 03-21-2011 11:45 PM

I don't see the point of having a smartphone mostly because I don't see the point in them... I mean for me.

On the other hand, I'd love to have a tablet... maybe a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 when it comes out down here...

Love my droid. It lets me skype at work in between patients now! And Angry Birds is freaking hilarious. I also love epocrates--it lets me look up medications and double check that there aren't any medication interactions I have to worry about.

I'm also a weather fanatic, so I now can see the weather radar properly, unlike on my old phone which refused to display it at all.

urluckyday 03-23-2011 05:44 PM

I buy smart phones that don't require data plans mostly because Verizon is waaaay overpriced. I just love full keyboards and smart phones almost always have excellent keyboards (I text a lot).

Darth_Calo 03-26-2011 10:58 PM

I don't have one, but I want one. Trouble is, Verizon's Data Plan system is rediculous. "this phone requires a $30 a month data plan." "this simpler phone requires a $15 a month data plan." "$30 a month gets you unlimited data...oh, wait, now that we've got the iPhone, it doesn't."

Allronix 03-27-2011 05:23 PM

Blackberry here - and it's GREAT for pulling up bus schedules.

Prime 03-28-2011 11:42 PM

I have Samsung Galaxy phone. Love it.

Wookiee Rrudolf 03-29-2011 10:17 AM

Yes, I have a smartphone. Mostly for e-book reading, playing some games and checking XKCD.com (I even have special app for this) which all count as fun.
Oh, and what's this 'Facebook' thing?

Qui-Gon Glenn 03-29-2011 10:52 PM

iPhone4 owner.

Absolutely essential business tool, as I can get/make email text and phone messages whenever I need to. I am a freelancer, networking is crucial to the business, and it enables that part of my job greatly.

The apps are the other side of the excellence. I can make an entire lighting or grip package order on the phone, send it directly to the warehouse, and know exactly my rental rate up front without speaking to anyone or needing to enter any text. I can find and follow the sun and know where it will be at what time in my location, which helps me know what lights will need to play (or not play) and when I will need to amp things up or let the grips do the work while I play Flight Control (a game :D ) Just a couple examples, there are many great apps, for banking as well it is very helpful and an actual time-saver: depositing your check with your phone is a godsend.

Astor 03-30-2011 11:31 AM

Ok, I have to retract my earlier post - I now have a smartphone, but I still think they're a little dumb.

acdcfanbill 03-31-2011 01:21 AM

pfft, sellout :xp:

Tommycat 03-31-2011 11:02 AM

I got my smartphone initially for work. I can send a few emails to the people who need them from home before I get to work so I can do my veg out thing when I get to the office. It was also very handy in finding where the next plant is before I get to where the someone told me it was only to find out I have to take 3 left turns because of all the one way streets UGH!

And if someone has to call me from work, I charge them 4 hours each time I get called after hours. I tell them up front that I'll take the 4 hours off on my next business day. It stops them from abusing it.

And I use angry birds when I'm waiting on a meeting, or when off work, I play it while waiting for the table at the restaurant to be ready. it makes the time go MUCH quicker.

No Thanks.

HTC Desire ftw, I used to have an iPhone but they have become such a cliché of modern society, plus I love the fact I can customise pretty much anything to do with my phone without Steve Jobs doing a full cavity search on me :)

Oh and no death grip or silly plastic cases either lolz

Try out ADW launcher if you want to get rid of the stock HTC launcher, it's much faster and you can customise it like crazy, it gives you more room on your homescreen too cause you can even hide the taskbar if you want :thmbup1:

.:Lord Revan:. 04-07-2011 03:11 PM

No I don't have one but I want one.

Lynk Former 04-07-2011 07:32 PM

I still don't really care about smartphones... but I really like the Samsung Galaxy S II... it just looks so pretty in so many ways...

Canaan Sadow 04-08-2011 10:07 PM

I have one... simply to listen to music when I'm having to "listen" to some dumbass trying to talk me into things that I don't wanna do, and to plug it into my car stereo system :p

Haiden 04-14-2011 06:05 AM

Yeah I am having a smartphone and When I am at college or work I use it for Facebook..!!

MachineCult 04-17-2011 07:34 AM

I would vote, but I don't use mine for work OR facebook.

urluckyday 04-24-2011 01:29 AM

I just recently had to buy a new phone b/c my Palm Centro BLOOOOOWS! $30 bucks a month as a requirement? Nonsense. I'll stick with "dumbphones" as long as I don't have to blow almost $400 a year on a less interesting and viewable internet that I can take with me.

Gurges-Ahter 04-27-2011 05:27 PM

I'm a bit surprised at all the comments about how smartphones are "dumb". They definitely provide utility... unlimited access to the internet in your pocket, mp3 players, video players, social networking capabilities, phone (duh), plus many more. I also use my Android quite frequently as a navigational device using the GPS. It's a TomTom, iPad, phone, and mini-laptop all in one, ultra-portable device. Definitely not dumb. Oh, and the (free) audible app makes my commute to work tolerable.

I am anti-Apple, and I love Google, so I went with an Android. I did have a blackberry beforehand, and went through some withdrawals when I first made the switch, but now I'm happy I did.

I'm probably also a bit skewed because I don't think that they're expensive... my phone was under $200 and another $30 a month isn't unreasonable to me.
