Huge Thank You to stoffe!

stoffe spent the last few days trying to track down a nasty problem that led to the forum being hacked (see the forum announcement on it).

First: If you have not changed your password, GO DO THAT RIGHT NOW!

Second: thank you, thank you, thank you to stoffe and the other staff who spent time checking over a ton of scripts, code and searching different names to ensure forum security.
Jeff, Lynk, acdcfanbill, and mimartin all worked on this problem to help stoffe out. I know you all spent several days on this issue, and I appreciate it very much.

newbiemodder 08-21-2011 08:43 PM

Thanks everyone for all the hard work. Stoffe, once again you rock!!!

Bob Lion54 08-21-2011 09:26 PM

Good job, everyone that worked on it! Thanks a bunch!

Most especially our Esteemed Forum Goddess stoffe!

Please also change it to something more complex than a three letter word in the dictionary. Mine wasn’t that simple, but stoffe still had me change it.

My contribution was looking at a list, nothing more other than staying out of stoffe’s way while she did all the work. stoffe did all the work and deserves 99.99999999999% of the credit, Lynk, acdcfanbill and Jeff can share whatever is left.

All hail the great and powerful stoffe.

Well, I think I know the reason for *some* of those weird little incidents that have occurred over the past few years since I became active on here. Thank you Stoffe!

Shem 08-21-2011 11:43 PM

Wow, didn't think the downtime was going to be this type of situation. Thanks for the hard work! :D

This incident has highlighted the fact that 99% of people SUCK at making passwords and should have all of their personal information stolen from them for having such terrible passwords.

crackers is not a passwords. It's crackers.

Totenkopf 08-22-2011 04:24 AM

Props to the Stoffe for handling what no doubt feels like a thankless task. LF wouldn't the same w/o her handiwork.

Indeed! Thank you LF Staff (especially stoffe) for all your hard work.

Astor 08-22-2011 05:35 AM

Stoffe is much like The Force.

She has a Light and Dark Side (rarely seen, admittedly), but it's not the universe she's holding together, she is instead holding together these forums, which have become a second home to many of us.

So thank you, stoffe, for your tireless, and frustrated efforts to keep LF running against the odds, when others would have simply threw their hands in the air and said 'I quit!'.

jonathan7 08-22-2011 06:02 AM

Thanks Stoffe, I have changed my password as a precautionary measure, although I wouldn't of thought my last one would have been cracked!

Miltiades 08-22-2011 07:35 AM

Oh, I quite liked my password, but changed it just to be sure. Thanks, Stoffe, for saving the day once more!

Pavlos 08-22-2011 07:46 AM

Thanks to stoffe and everyone who helped to fix this.

Alkonium 08-22-2011 08:14 AM

They say it's a thankless job, but let me continue to prove them wrong. Thank you.

Darth InSidious 08-22-2011 09:12 AM

Thank you, stoffe, not just for this occasion, but for all the times you've spent how-many-hours fixing things.

adamqd 08-22-2011 11:47 AM

Thank you Stoffe! :)

This. For every problem announced, I'm sure 10 more have been solved quietly. Thanks for keeping this place running.

My password discipline here is pretty bad. A fairly weak password (not as bad as 'crackers' though), gone unchanged for god knows how long (as opposed to fairly regular switches). I just never really bothered fixing it since I don't reuse PWs, and don't store any important info on this site.

Quit implying that is possible. We have already told her that is not a option. :xp: You're going to give her ideas.

I personally consider stoffe the Lucas Forums saint, not only does she put up with all the technical problems Lucas Forums throw at her, but she also has to put up with the staff. :xp:

Great work Stoffe, you've proved your worth many times before, here on LF, and you have proved it again; bigtime!

Cheers to Stoffe for all of the hard work. :golfclap:

All saints are at least a little masochistic.

Thanks again, stoffe. :)

JesusIsGonnaOwnSatan 08-23-2011 08:54 AM

Can we have passphrases?

JediAthos 08-23-2011 09:11 AM

Awesome job Stoffe! Thanks to you and all the rest of the staff as well!

Biometrics is the key!

It's a bit harder to hack something when you need someone's finger or eyeball for it, ot a bit messier in any case lol

Thanks stoffe I wil go change my password to "nahnahnahyoustupidhaxorscantgetmestoffewilleatyou 111111111111"

Lynk Former 08-24-2011 07:00 AM

Just don't use words you can find in the dictionary for starters... and just to play it safe, that is limited to the English dictionary.

Jae Onasi 08-24-2011 05:46 PM

Using your own user name for your password is also BAD. :)

Lynk Former 08-25-2011 04:43 AM

Using "password" as your password is also stupid... just in case someone in here thought otherwise.

Sabretooth 08-25-2011 05:40 AM

HOW MANY MORE TIMES ARE YOU GUYS GOING TO MAKE ME CHANGE PASSWORDS AAARGH

You'll note that Jae didn't say anything about using another member's username as your password, though. :)

No, actually. I hadn't seen the comic before you mentioned it.

Its just common knowledge that passphrases are exponentially harder to crack than passwords. (Isn't it?)

I don't think anyone has made you do anything. The schedule I'm looking at does not have us coming by your house for the mandatory password change until September 15, 2011 at 12:45 pm local time.

Wow ok who was that at my door today then?

Many times we visit these sites and enjoy these forums and forget that there is a real person who has put their time and effort into making it what it is. A huge thank you to Stoffe for this site seems a bit less than is deserved. The time and energy put in to something we all get to enjoy for free is, I'm sure, massive. For what it's worth, Stoffe, You have my gratitude.

And to the mods, also a thank you for keeping this site under control.
