Raven got the Lightsabers Perfect!

If you are like me, you were probably displeased with the replication of the Jedi lightsabers in the games.

The main thing that got be pissed with the lightsabers from previous games was the lack of lightsaber trails from moving it around.

Jedi Knight Dark Forces II and Mysterious of the Sith didn't even have lightsaber trails.

The Phantom Menace game had trails, but were very poor.

Obi-Wan had better trails then Phantom Menace, but still was not good.

What the developers were getting wrong was, when the lightsaber moved they made the trail this long light wave, but in Outcast Raven has actually made the trail part of the saber and instead of making a long trail they make it slightly short - how it should be.

Can't wait for dueling lightsabering in multiplayer - oh yes! ;)

simon says 03-11-2002 05:55 PM

Yeah, they got them replicated pretty well, except for one thing: the 'bat saber' effect. THAT I can definetly do without:mad::mad:  :(

Squalliss 03-11-2002 06:02 PM

What is this bat-saber I am hearing about?

ryudom 03-11-2002 06:23 PM

the batsaber is when theres a knock back on the light saber, although raven said there wasn't any in single player, and wasn't sure about multiplayer. i don't think we need to worry about it

TIE 03-11-2002 06:27 PM

Wouldn't getting hit with a lightsaber do the same as getting hit with a laser bolt, though?

digl 03-11-2002 06:46 PM

no!!

would a laser cut through you as the lightsaber would?

StAtilXl 03-11-2002 06:56 PM

nope lasers dont cut i know from experience

simon says 03-11-2002 07:09 PM

the bat saber is when you hit a person with the saber, and that person flies 30 feet away from you. Watch the trailers, you can spot it once or twice

Lord_FinnSon 03-11-2002 07:09 PM

Please, let's not go into that Batsaber discussion again... It's like hitting your head againts the wall! How it affects MP gameplay? In the words of so many forumgoers so far, "we will see it, when JK2 comes out." What comes to lightsaber itself, I also think Raven has done tremendous job and it's closest visual representation of this "elegant weapon" in any SW game so far.

Obi Kwan 03-11-2002 07:40 PM

Agreed Lord FinnSon; remember how heated the whole "proper sabre blending" debate got? Ug-LEE.

How...would I know...?

I imagine it could be possible for some kind of blaster to shoot through you, like a lightsaber "cuts," But I suppose it's just speculation...

Belgirion 03-11-2002 08:30 PM

blasters aren't lasers, they're plasma bolts.

MustangMatt302 03-11-2002 08:31 PM

Well....I agree

Raven did a very "perfect-o" job at wielding the true visions of lightsabers. The glows, the shades, the hums, animations, static, and etc.... The "bat" saber is true waste of time, it makes absolutely no sense at all. Keep the saber, but lose the baseball player.

Belgirion 03-11-2002 08:37 PM

well they did take it out...didn't they say that at the devchat?

Cracken 03-11-2002 08:41 PM

I think I've seen the "bat saber" effect, but I have a possible explanation for it: perhaps it is the combined effect of a killing or wounding blow plus Force push. It would also make sense, as you wouldn't want someone's saber cutting off your arm after you left yourself exposed to strike the last blow.

Belgirion 03-11-2002 08:49 PM

or maybe they made the lightsabers realistic and made the saber a stick with computer generated effects just like the movies!!!!!!!!!

Indy4 03-11-2002 09:07 PM

can people edit it to stop it?

Gabrobot 03-11-2002 09:20 PM

Uh, doesn't anyone remember that raven guy posting that the "batsaber" had been taken out?

...Lightsabers are far from realistic...the whole idea behind it is physically impossible.

Wacky_Baccy 03-11-2002 11:31 PM

On-topic... The Lightsabres in JKII are absolutely GORGEOUS! Good job, Raven!

He meant realistic to the movies :)

Really? Would you care to prove that? :p

Now I'll be nice :D

Welcome to the forums, D4rkKnight - make yourself at home, enjoy your stay, and don't say anything's impossible - because that's not necessarily true... ;)

patchx 03-12-2002 08:21 AM

actually i read a thing in a New Scientist magazine that i found on the train once that some physicists had theorized a way of making a functional lightsaber-like device
if i recall correctly the idea was to use some sort of really strong magnetic field to bend a stream of plasma around on itself that was emitted from some sort of "thingo"

they said the "hilt" of it would be freakin huge though

hehe, i have the guide to the star wars weapons and technologie book and it says something like that about the lightsaber.

Agen 03-12-2002 08:32 AM

gah! i like glowsitcks better :D

j/k

Welcome D4rkKnight, have a newbie's spoon replica gift :D

Well to be honest I think that lightsabers are best kept in that galaxy far far away.

IES_Horn_SWS 03-12-2002 08:33 AM

"Freakin' Huge"? I like it!

Sabers can be created.... Keep this quiet, but I really am working on one. The design is finished, constructo time!:saberb: :saberr: :saberg: :slsaber: :syoda: :dsaber:

*melts saberw ith spoon, with some sort of red eye thing that coemso ut of superman's eyes* oops.

Hoowl 03-12-2002 09:20 AM

I agree the sabers look far superior to any other star wars game. If you look at one of the e3 trailers the saber battle between kyle and one of the dark jedi looks really cool. When the sabers clash the whole screen is filled with a flash.

The scarring on the walls also makes the weapon feel more powerful and the saber throw looks very effective and easy to pull off.

All this combined with some of the acrobatics you can perform should lead to more lightsaber duels and fewer jousts.

 You took my job away from me.

ILoveJainaSolo 03-13-2002 07:19 AM

My guess is, we could discuss the possibilities of the saber physics if we could stick to the basic rule of science fiction cogitation: "IF it existed, how could it be explained?"
Well, my thought is, if everyone believes shields are possible, so are lightsabers, cause, if shields deflect light, you can also contain the light and make alightsaber

Pedro The Hutt 03-13-2002 08:14 AM

But the blade of a lightsaber is pure energy, not light ^_^"

patchx 03-13-2002 08:31 AM

define "pure" energy though?

i think energy is a concept rather then a definable object
its the potential an object or event has to create a force

there are 4 types of forces
strong nuclear
weak nuclear
electro-magnetic
and gravitational

i think light is strong nuclear i.e it is a consequence of some sort of radiation be it from a chemical, electrical or nuclear source

although if i remember correctly weak gravitational force is the force that binds tiny particles (atoms nucleus's electrons) together

sound kinda like the force huh?

Pedro The Hutt 03-13-2002 08:34 AM

Don't ask me, I'm just stating my sources (the SW Encyclopedia said that a lightsaber emits a blade of pure energy)

Squalliss 03-13-2002 08:35 AM

The lightsaber is one of the most original and coolest weapons made.

It is sad, however its origins are unknown. Bad George!

Personally, I believe the lightsaber to be light energy.

dazilla 03-13-2002 09:34 AM

One thing's for sure, though. Unless they managed to create some kind of repulsion field, it would be impossible for a lightsaber to be stopped by another one.

ChangKhan[RAVEN] 03-13-2002 11:59 AM

I think lightsabers should be left unexplained in Star Wars (they have a nice, mystical fantasy quality about them, like the Force, that would be ruined if you tried to explain it by saying, oh, something like it's actually a blade made of mitichlorian waste products)...

Having said that, I can't resist playing the sci-fi theoretical science guessing game... so here's my theory:

A saber is some kind of super-hot plasma that's kept in blade shape by a powerful electromagnetic field. That way you can lengthen and shorten the blade and is passes through anything without a magnetic field... which, of course, excludes other lightsabers... so perhaps the magnetic fields on lightsabers are naturally repellant (like the negative sides of 2 magnets) and that's why lightsabers bounce off each other... after all, magnetic repulsion is what makes everything else solid (otherwise, whenever you touched anything, you'd chemically bond with it)...

My $.02

Tasuki 03-13-2002 07:19 PM

I can't wait to right my name with a lightsaber on the wall.

BlacKnight 03-13-2002 07:59 PM

I don't know if this would work or not but my own pet theory is that the blade is somehow made of pure electrons (or maybe ions) that are controled with some kind of force field. When the blade passes through something it dirupts the matter so much that it simply destroys it.
Of course this doesn't explain the heat like effect it has and I don't think that they would block each other :p

Jediknight786 03-13-2002 08:08 PM

The lightsabers in the game look damn good. The trails are short and sweet, very cool effect. Multiplayer is gonna be unbelieveable, especially saber battles. The only complaint I have is that in some images, the hilt looks huge. It's not really a big deal, but it was weird to see it. Regardless, it'll be cool.:lsduel:

Wacky_Baccy 03-13-2002 08:15 PM

I'd have preferred the trails to be a little shorter, but otherwise, they're awesome!

Welcome to the forums, Jediknight786 and BlacKnight - make yourselves at home, and enjoy your stays here

Redwing 03-13-2002 10:51 PM

They posted that the batsaber had been taen out? Can I have a link...? :D

Get ready for the windup, Kyle!
