-Dont convert anything, go into sub object mode in the modifier panel. Simply click the vertex sub object to turn it off, thats all.

-You can always change the .skin file to point to the renamed mesh, thats not a problem.

-Yes the hand will be bound to the arm, simply detach it and rename correctly i guess i forgot to mention that. It's a simple way to reset and object's state.
