Moderators here tend to be people who are particularly active in the forum section they get assigned as moderator in. Well, if a person was someone who would merely like to help out, then I doubt there would be much of an issue.
Reading through other peoples posts on a topic that you may not normally have interest in may actually help develop an interest and/or an opinion in the topics.
