There are many Americans that think that way as well... especially where I live in the Northeast, where the "Puritan" ethic is surprisingly still in effect. Which is why I've seen people suffer their entire lives with the same problems... or perhaps trying to fix it themselves with diet and exercise... and still going through the same issues and being miserable and making others miserable as well.

My girlfriend has a relative who thinks she can cure all her issues herself and is making things worse for herself and the rest of us trying to deal with something that most likely could easily be balanced out with meds and/or counseling... but she refuses all help, thinking it will somehow make things worse if she did.

But many are starting to see that many mental illnesses are just as real and treatable as, say, cancer.
