I think that if you use one of the mounted guns along the ridge, where the ion canons are, on the 3rd ATST, it will not disappear. I discovered this when the very first mounted cannon got destroyed so I ran right past the 3rd ATST (not that hard coz he cant shoot you when you are right below him).
What's more, you don't have to backtrack.
