Do you read comics? Anime discussion now included!

So, do you read comics and if yes, what titles and why do you like them?

In my country it's impossible to find a person who hasn't read Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse comics at one point of their life. I don't really like them as much as I used to (though I'll forever give the fantastic Italian artists a bow) but they're still entertaining, I guess.

Then there's W.I.T.H.C., the Italian comic about magical girls. The plot is cliché, the art borrows from Japan, but it's strangely addictive. I just wish the cartoon didn't suck so much.

Lately I've started growing interested in more mature western comics, so I think I'm going to start keeping an eye on stuff released by DC. Marvel isn't really my stuff, for some reason.

And now that I've ranted about myself, as usual, I'd really like to learn about your comic favourites. Perhaps we can recommend titles to each other.

I read comics all the time, but they're belgian comics and I'm pretty sure no one else on these forums reads them

I also have some Donald Ducks and Marvel comics that I read very often

I am an avid Marvel fan, mostly the X-Men. Although right now I'm mainly reading the "Ultimate" series which is a more modern and contemporary take on the Marvel Universe.

I'd like to read more manga, but the series they're releasing here (Ranma ½, One Piece etc.) don't appeal to me. I want something more serious.

Hey Steve, I'd love to hear more about Belgian comics. What kind of series do you read? European comics are interesting.

I really dig 30 Days of Night a lot. I'm also really getting into Elk's Run.

I used to be a huge fan of Chaos Comics like Evil Ernie and Purgatori and Dead King, but they're not really around anymore, and I've kind of grown out of them.

Wel, the most popular in Belgium are (click on the name for a picture of the front of each comic):
Jommeke: The main character is a kid called "Jommeke". He gets in all kinds of crazy adventures with his friends and his pet parrot "Flip".
Suske & Wiske: Main characters are a boy and girl, their aunt, a real strong guy named "Jerom" and a guy names "Lambik". They also get in all kinds of crazy adventures, there's a professor in the stories that invented a time machine and they use it every once in a while

Urbanus: Main character is a Belgian comedian who made a fictional comic about his life. Really weird and fudged stories happen all the time!
Kiekeboe: It's a comic about a family of 4. For mature audiences from time to time but really fun to read.

The comics JofaGuht mentioned are completely new to me. That doesn't surprise me though, since I've grown to understand that JG does everything his way. :P

You know Steve, the covers of all those, especially the first, remind me strongly of Tintin. That's from Belgium too, right? Gosh, I love that comic.

30 Days of Night is just currently growing to be more well known. I hear they're going to make a film. It's about vampires in Alaska during its month without sun. It was collected into a graphic novel which spawned two continuations: Dark Days and 30 Days of Night: Return to Barrow. Return to Barrow is my favorite.

Elk's Run is an 8-issue arc that's only in it's second issue, so it's barely known by anyone. It's very Stephen King-ish with a storyline I cannot sum up from what I've read. I just know it's really cool.

The Chaos! Comics were pretty big in the mid to late 90's, Lady Death being the most known character, who I wasn't as much into. I was obsessed with Evil Ernie and Purgatori though. In its later years, Chaos! Comics started going downhill into a "big tits and machine guns" sort of intellegence and stopped paying attention to strong characters and good storylines. In 2002 the company went bankrupt and people forgot about it.

Yeah, the first comic cover you posted does look really similar to the Tintin style.

I have quite a large collection of The Simpsons comics. In the past I used to enjoy Disney comics. And I've always enjoyed TinTin aswell.

If manga counts as comics, sure, I've read the Crest of the Stars, Banner of the Stars, and Banner of the Stars II mangas, as well as about a dozen volumes of Love Hina. Very good reads, I suggest people look into them.

I read plenty of manga, but like VampireNaomi I'm also not too into... Ranma 1/2 or One Piece. However, like Kjolen, I've also read, and love, the series Love Hina. My favorite. But not the anime. Eeewww, the anime sucks.

I think its often depends what you prefer more, anime or manga in generell.
But somethimes even this doesnt matter.
If I had read the Love Hina manga first, I would maybe like it more then the animated version.

Can we talk about anime too? ^_^

Has anyone seen or read Gunslinger Girl? I've seen the anime, but haven't read any of the manga. The series was very good. It's about a bunch of girls with artificials bodies and their "mentors". The girls are trained in combat and weapons and used in fights against terrorists.

Hmm, well, just in case I'll post no spoilers. Lets just say that the manga has a MUCH different end then the anime, and I felt that the manga had more story to it. And better art. Just my opinion.

And watch me expertly tie this in with Grim Fandango: The woman who did Lola's voice in GF also did the voice of Kitsune in the dubbed version of Love Hina.

What kind of Anime do you like Rubacava?

Yes I watched the whole Anime version of Love Hina..3 years ago or more, I cant say. ( well I was young then, let guess 18/19) It was my first contact with this kind of Anime especially with subtitles in english. I watched about 20 episodes in 2 days ^_^
And I loved it, really, I even watched the Xmas special and Love Hina Agian ( wasnt that good, but a bit more ecci then the first 24 / 25 ? episodes)
Well what Iam trying to say all the time, i couldt watch Love Hina again. It was great 2001 / 2002 but ... this kind of stories are so ..soo... everywhere now.

The manga ( that I borrowed from a friend ) was quite different, never "read" it to the end ( hey it was all japanese ?! try to read that! )

Love Hina was good, funny, about true love and just the perfekt mix. But for today, there are alot of better anime...
well...

I love Slam Dunk (Anime)... ^_^

Oh man, what kind of anime do I like? Lots... My favorite I think, is FLCL. So weird, so great. I cosplayed as Haruko for a convention I went to. I also love Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Evangelion, and... too many others for me to think of right now. Let's just say a lot. Oh! Excel Saga! Yes. Lots of manga too.

Why do everybody like FLCL? Read it alot of it in u.s. boards, and I cant figure it out. i I saw the first episode and well... nothibng happend to me.
Evangelion is surely great, and of course Bepop, Trigun is good too, but Excel Saga?

WHY? i know alot of guys who lovin it, but for its just weird ( no offense =) )
And I watch stuff like Ping Pong Club and Slam Dunk ( well PPC is really weird lol, but funny)

I have to take my words back and admit that I was wrong. A girl at my school handed me some manga albums and told me to read them. Among were some issues of One Piece and, to my astonishment, I actually enjoyed them. It was hilarious and I had clearly judged the manga too early.

On the other hand, I got a headache from Time Stranger Kyoko. The art does nothing for me and the characters were unoriginal and forgettable. I felt like strangling that annoying cat chibi thing. And if there is one thing I can't stand about manga, it's that a perfectly serious plot is so often interrupted by the characters becoming chibis, remarking something humorous or doing something random. If the Japanese really think that's funny, then their sense of humour sucks.

Anyone else read TSK?

Yeah, I cosplay. Cosplay is awesome. I've cosplayed as Naru (Love Hina) Robin (Witch Hunter Robin) and Haruko (FLCL)
The reason I like FLCL and Excel Saga is because I like that really weird humor. Excel Saga just for the weird humor, and FLCL because if you watch it, there's actually more to it than just the wacky humor. So you can watch it just for that, or you can look a little deeper.

And yes, I got a TON of pictures of me taken when I was Haruko. Unfortunately, I lost my off-white undershirt after the first day, and didn't finish my boots in time, so my costume isn't quite right.
