Im having problems with 3DS Max ... :S

so .. the thing is .. i have a model which consists of several parts .. lets just say a sword with grip, crossguard and blade .. theyre all editable meshes .. when theyre seperate i can unwrap them and everything is OK ... but when i group them ... using group ... puff .. nothing .. neither can i convert it to other editable nor can i unwrap it ...
so .. can anyone help me .. ? ..

Dont use grouping (NEVER!), its useless, what you need is the attach tool:

Select one of the meshes, go in sub object mode scroll down 'til you find attach, click and select the mesh you wanna attach.
