KOTOR-1: The Romances (Possibly Spoiler)

Hello. I'm new to playing KOTOR, but not BioWare games (BG, ID, NWN). This is my first Star Wars game.

I know there is an eventual romance in the game between Male PC/Bastila or Female PC/Carth (Just about every BW game I've played has had an NPC romance in nit.)

Since the mod to make same-sex Carth romance seems to have vanished into the ether (unless someone possibly has it), I was wondering if the male PC (since that what I will play)/Bastila relationship is *required* or not? Can I just turn her down or is it plot-dependent?

Well of course you can "decline" her! Meaning you might have to kill her...
