1st Place: "Life Doesn't Come From Non-Life"

Middle School Level

Patricia Lewis (grade 8) did an experiment to see if life can evolve from non-life. Patricia placed all the non-living ingredients of life - carbon (a charcoal briquet), purified water, and assorted minerals (a multi-vitamin) - into a sealed glass jar. The jar was left undisturbed, being exposed only to sunlight, for three weeks. (Patricia also prayed to God not to do anything miraculous during the course of the experiment, so as not to disqualify the findings.) No life evolved. This shows that life cannot come from non-life through natural processes.
Too bad she didn't have billion or so years to give the experiment proper validity

My favorite was this High School level entry:

1st Place: "Using Prayer To Microevolve Latent Antibiotic Resistance In Bacteria"

Eileen Hyde and Lynda Morgan (grades 10 & 11) did a project showing how the power of prayer can unlock the latent genes in bacteria, allowing them to microevolve antibiotic resistance. Escherichia coli bacteria cultured in agar filled petri dishes were subjected to the antibiotics tetracycline and chlorotetracycline. The bacteria cultures were divided into two groups, one group (A) received prayer while the other (B) didn't. The prayer was as follows: "Dear Lord, please allow the bacteria in Group A to unlock the antibiotic-resistant genes that You saw fit to give them at the time of Creation. Amen." The process was repeated for five generations, with the prayer being given at the start of each generation. In the end, Group A was significantly more resistant than Group B to both antibiotics.
Wonder how Hyde and Morgan are so sure god didn't just give them "anti-biotic resistant genes" at the time of prayer!? LMFAO!

*sighs* I wish I could put some water in a jar and leave it for three weeks and get a prize. I usually just get yelled at for leaving dishes out.

*edit

Wow, just read this article in depth. Now I'm pissed. These people are being rewarded for thinking in a narrow, short sighted manner. Look at this one!

Quote:
1st Place: "My Uncle Is A Man Named Steve (Not A Monkey)" Cassidy Turnbull (grade 5) presented her uncle, Steve. She also showed photographs of monkeys and invited fairgoers to note the differences between her uncle and the monkeys. She tried to feed her uncle bananas, but he declined to eat them. Cassidy has conclusively shown that her uncle is no monkey.
Oh, man.... I guess nobody clued in Cassidy that evolution is not trying to say that people ARE monkeys, but rather that they evolved FROM a primate species, and are not like them anymore. There we go again, Evolution being incorrectly explained to children so they dont believe in it. I can hear it now...

Cassidy: "Pastor, what is Evolution?"
Pastor: "Evolution is the atheistic, hell bound theory that says you and I are the same as monkeys, and that our ancestors were monkeys."

Quote:
2nd Place: "Pine Cones Are Complicated". David Block and Trevor Murry (grades 4) showed how specifically complicated pine cones are and how they reveal God's design in nature.
Check it out, this computer I'm on is pretty specifically complicated. It must reveal Gods design in technology. Or maybe just Dells... sometimes I cant tell the difference.

And although we cant read much about it, we can probably figure out what the project ""The Bible Says Creation" - Aaron Kent (grade 5)" is all about. Some might accept this, but I seriously doubt it fits into a "creation science fair," being that the Bible is not a scientific document.

More from this site.

I didn't know such extreamist views still existed...

It refers to a Darth Maul custume as "blatantly occult garb."

The "hidden bible tract" mentioned at the end of the article is disgusting...who do these people think they are?

2nd Place: "Women Were Designed For Homemaking"
Jonathan Goode (grade 7) applied findings from many fields of science to support his conclusion that God designed women for homemaking: physics shows that women have a lower center of gravity than men, making them more suited to carrying groceries and laundry baskets; biology shows that women were designed to carry un-born babies in their wombs and to feed born babies milk, making them the natural choice for child rearing; social sciences show that the wages for women workers are lower than for normal workers, meaning that they are unable to work as well and thus earn equal pay; and exegetics shows that God created Eve as a companion for Adam, not as a co-worker.
This is by far the most blatant attack on women's rights I've ever seen condoned by a school. [/big word rant]

Seriously I believe in free speech and all but courtesy is something I believe in also (I hold it higher than free speech).

Now, The same "facts" can be used to show that women are meant just for particular deviant sex acts as I've scene in a contortion of facts style report. I won't go into it but it was given as an example of how people easily and quite oftenly use these so called biological proof of people's place in society is contorted. I don't remember where I saw it but it was disturbing enough to stick in my mind for eternity. :S

"Rocks Can't Evolve, Where Did They Come From Mr. Darwin?" - Anna Reed (grade 6)
They were once tiny particles of sand and dirt. They were then covered with water and clumped together, over hundreds of years they began to fossilize thus become the hard object known as a rock.

too bad she'll never know.

Where did God come from, Miss Reed?

It took roughly a billion years since the creation of the Earth for life to form(single-celled protein organisms, if I remember correctly). If she could make life within 3 weeks, then it would be an act of God.

Unhappy bleah

This is the kind of crud that gets Christians a bad rep. This is, without a doubt, some of the worst science and whatnot that I've ever seen. A critical distinction needs to be made here: not all Christians are this closed-minded or stupid!

An interesting point: you can tell when something is designed. Obviously the computer was designed by Dell. But the ID argument is that we can say the same thing about life... food for thought, not for an argument, please.

But on topic, this is pretty bad. And I'm a fundamental Christian....

I dont think anyone is slamming all christians for this. This is just an example of how bad organized religion can get when it goes rampant.
