Why does Luke get sent to a Desert Hell?

Okay guys -

This is a good question.

Who decides which twin goes to whom? Why does Padme send Leia for a life with Bail Organa and why does Luke get stuck leading the life that Anakin would have led if he stayed on Tatoine?

Did they think that Luke was stronger in the force than Leia?

Did not everyone know about Leia?

Why is Luke sent to the far ends of the earth?

Probably two locations as far removed from Coruscant as possible, far outside of the reach of what Vader or Palpatine could sense. And they were probably the two most logical ones.
Bail could easily afford raising a kid for one, and with Luke's case, I doubt Anakin/Vader had any intention of going back to Tatooine a place with such a strong connection with his past as Anakin Skywalker. After all he did urge Luke to believe that name meant nothing to him anymore in RotJ.

As a side note, Alderaan isn't that far from Coruscant. It's actually in the core worlds.

My guess is that it was just a matter of splitting them up for safety. What with Vader and Palpatine hunting down jedi, twin force sensitives looking like mommy and daddy = dead kids = bad. But Lucas doesn't tell us everything, so... who knows?

Well, It could just be that Leia goes with Bail after padme dies (because she told him to take her)...and for Luke, hmmm, well maybe Owen is sent to couresount or somthing and is only remaning family of sorts. Because of course she couldnt take her him/her to herparents, because anakin knows her parents. Oh well I just confused myself, May 2005 needs to come sooner

Think about it, they're twins... Alderaan in the core worlds... Tatooine in the outer rim... They were sent as far apart as possible.

yeah i agree i think they sent Luke to Tattooine because they knew Darth Vader wouldn't look their and because they knew Luke was going to be a powerful jedi and that Darth VAder would want him. Now Leia i don't know because they put her near Darth Vader so i don't know, I am confused about that part

I don't think it's a case of moving them far from Vader, I think it may be a case of moving them far from eachother. Maybe they were moved to the far ends of the galaxy because together they basically radiated the Force.

Being so young, i don't think they had any sort of a strong connection to the force, so i guess they thought it was safe to hide Leia on Alderann because of that,
Or maybe Luke was stronger as well shall see when he grows up, and needed to be hid further....

Ori think Obi Wan will be able to sense that, so he hides him close to were he will be able to get in easy contact, and begin training....

Well what I don't get is, why can Vader just look at Hoth and know Luke's there...but for you know what 20 or so years (not sure how long) he hasn't looked at Tatoiine and gone hey theres Luke? Or what about Leia? She was in his ship for god's sakes.

Well, apparently up untill between ANH and ESB he didn't even know he had any offspring at all. At least, I read that somewhere.
But if that were the case, he could've thought of Leia "Okay, she's Force sensitive, but without any training, she's of no danger to us"

@ Tesla: Well like I said before, they're twins and they're the son and daughter of Anakin Skywalker, the chosen one and the one who has the portentual to be the most powerful Jedi ever.
Twins have a special bond to eachother, maybe it was thought if they were kept together the bond they had with eachother and the Force would spark the attention of Palpatine. Because they're not going to remain that way, they wouldn've most likely stumbled onto their abilities if they were together. Leia was put on Alderaan and was raised in a way where she couldn't discover those powers. Luke was raised as a farmboy and Uncle Owen DID NOT want Luke to end up like Anakin and so he discouraged that kinda jazz all together.

Vader might have been helped by sensing Luke, but that wasn't the determining factor. He was using the force to sense the truth of where the Rebels were. Moreover, Luke had had enough training by then to have a more distinctive presence in the force. Vader wasn't looking for kids before, so that keeps him from sensing them.

As far as Leia on the Death Star, well, it's very difficult to sense mere ability unless you're actively looking.

I think that luke was the stronger with the force than the leia so he needed to be as far away from vader and palpatine as possible. And as tatooine is in the outa rim then it is the perfect place.

like many people b4 me have said, luke and leia were split apart from each other the farthest Obi-Wan could handle. luke went to tatooine because he's a guy, and guys do better in harsh desert conditions. if leia went to tatooine just imagine her aunt and uncle listening to her whining. leia's spoiled. feel sorry for han... what did he ever see in her? anyway, ani (soon to be darth vader) would risk killing luke, since he's in the Outer Rim, but wouldn't gamble the conspicuousness of killing leia, who later becomes an adopted princess of alderaan.

Yeah but if leia had gone to tatooine she was only a baby and would not have known any different. So what you said about gender doesnt really matter

Oh, as far as young children being strong and active in the force, Jacen and Jaina Solo were actively using it by the time they were 3. For proof, read the JA books. And that's not counting how they reached out to Leia and each other as they were born...

It's distance, and so Obi-Wan could keep an eye on Luke - maybe he or Yoda had a vision of the future at some point...

You just hit the nail on the head. Yoda was always viewing the Future so more than likely he had foreseen the events comming and prepared for it with Obi Wan.

The most logical idea is that Obi-wan and Yoda knew that Luke, the stronger of the twins in terms of the Force, would be hunted by the Emperor and Vader if he stayed within reaches of the Republic. If you think back to Episode 1, Qui-gon tells Shimi Skywalker that had Anakin been born in the republic, he would have been identified earlier on, but since he was out on the Outer Rim, he was undetected by Force users. So by placing Luke on Tattooine, the last place Vader would look, he would be safe there. Plus with Leia, Padme was still around and probably made sure that she (Leia) grew up on politics and in supporting the Rebellion.
