I have recently had the pleasure of renting Soniv Heroes for the Gamecube. This is my attempt at a review.
This is a great game, but it does have it's own demons that can turn some away.
The games premise and plot is basically the same, but varies depending on which of the teams you play as. The concept is very innovative, making you play as a team of 3 characters, which consist of a speed character, a power character, and one that can fly. The teams have characters from the very start of the sonic storm, to as recent as Sonic Advance 2. And even some that many have probably never heard of.
Team Sonic-The main team, consists of Sonic(speed), Knuckles(Power) and tails(fly). The "sonic Heroes" revieve a not from Dr. Eggman saying that he is almost finished building a super weapon that will destroy the world in 3 days. Thus begins their adventure.
Team Dark-The bad guys, consists of Shadow(Speed), E-123 Gamma(Power), and Rouge(Fly). Rouge heard reports that Eggman had amassed a huge treasure collection. When she arrives at Eggmans base, she sees that Eggman had taken all of the treasure and had abbandoned the base. As she looked around, she found a stasis pod. She looks closer to get a huge shock when she sees it's Shadow! As she returns power to the base to awaken Shadow, she accidentally awakens one of Eggmans robots, E-123 Gamma, in the process. Mistaking Shadow for one of Eggmans robots, E-123 starts destroying everything in an attempt to destroy Shadow. Rouge jumps in and breaks up the fight. She finds out that E-123 is basically hell-bent on destroying all of Eggmans robots for locking him in that room, and that shadow had lost all memories of before he was awoken by Rouge. They then form a team. Their Misson:To defeat Eggman.
Team Rose-The Easy team for beginners, consists of Amy(speed), Big the Cat(Power), and Cream(Fly). Amy, about to lose hope in her search for Sonic, sees a newspaper with Sonic's picture in it. She rushes to the Publisher, where she meets Big the Cat, and Cream. After a few quick exchanges of stories, they all realise that who they're all looking for could be together, since they were all in the paper. They all set off together, Amy for Sonic, Big for his friend Froggy(and yes, it is a frog), and Cream for her Chao's twin Chocola.
Team Chaotix-This team ahs different missions(aka find ten hermit crabs), but I don't care. This team fill me and what, 2 others with Nostalgia. For the three of us who played Knuckles Chaotix, It's Espio(speed), Vector(power), and Charmy Bee(fly).
Things have been quiet for a long time at the Chaotix detective agency. All of a sudden, Charmy flys in the door, a package in hand. A small walkie talkie pops out, with a customer on the other side. He says that he would like their service(duh). Espo doesn't trust this person bfrom the mysterious ways that he has contacted them, but $'s pop in Vector and Charmy's eyes.
Now on to the actual review. As I said before, you play as a team. You have tree formations, Speed, Power, and Fly formations. Switching formations is made easy witha quick press of the X or Y buttons. You then have different advantages for the formations. An example is when in the Power formation, Sonic and tails(or whoever) will automatically attack any enemies that are near. You can also bust through obsticles or ememies that were otherwise indestructable. The controls are pretty good, but sometimes are a little awkward. Because of this, Controls get an 8.5.
The graphics don't take control of the cubes power, andmakes it look like a Dreamcast game. But guess what, I don't give a frick. I love my Dreamcast to death. The framerate is solid as a rock. But the camera is a major downfall to this game. Especially in one of the stages where you must press jump at the right time to jump from vine to vine and escape a giant alligator. I died on that sooooo many times. I garenty(sp) that you will die because of the camera angle on several occasions.
In terms of gmaeplay, I absolutely love the Team thing. It makes it a little more fun for me than the Sonic Adventure games. BUt there are some issues. For example, you will fall off of the edge or miss a rail by accident and die. Alot. Throughout the entire game. There are also some clipping issues where you will sometimes end up either falling to your death, or stuck behind some piece of geometry.
The plot is good so far, I have beaten it with team sonic, and am working on Dark and Rose(only when my lil bro want's to "play"), but it does leave something out, but am sure that it will appear after I beat it with all the teams(like the sonic adventure games). But still, the plot is so far no as good as the adventure games. After I beat it with all of the teams I will probably change my score, but for now, this is it.
The music is very good, but the major downfall of the sound catagory is the voice work. It sounds like they used a computer to do Tails' voice.
"Sonic! Maybe, if , we, pull, that, lever, something, will, happen."
And I can assure you that in the beggining you won't mind the voices, but by the end of the game, you will want to gauge your ears out.
A few more months of testing would have done this game a lot of good, and if they did a better job on the voicework, it would make my score alot better. But overall a great game.
