Performance woes with the fiel of view

Hiya folks, I'm running JKII on a time machine. A 450, give or take a few mhz, AMD K-6 II with 382 MB RAM and a 64MB PCI GEFORCE 4 420. The only way that my system may stop chugging, until I save enough for an alienware, would be to set the horizon very close... you know what I mean, like Turok for the N64 ... Any help on how the set the field view no more than 20 ft away would be great....

If you set it to 450, you can barely see yourself and the enemy.
