Adware, spyware, etc

Hi, just a quick question: what's the best thing to use for getting rid of adware and all the rest of the junk floating around inside my computer? Preferably something I can download rather than pay for, and something that isn't going to make an even better mess. I've heard of a lot of stuff that can deal with this problem but I don't know which are reliable and which aren't. Thanks!

AdAware and SpyBot: Search & Destroy will do a good job together, and unless you have an obscure urge to install every single piece of suspicious software you manage to find, they should be enough to keep your computer clean.

I would also recommend using Opera or Firefox instead of Internet Explorer, which should pretty much eliminate the problem of spyware getting to your computer through your web browser.

Thx for the links. I'm changing over to Firefox.
I recently read that ie will download viruses through pop-ups.
Of course I don't have pop-ups or ads anymore now that I have Symantec's internet security but I still like the idea of moving to something safer.

Go to download.com and get Spyware Doctor (its 10 times faster than Adaware and Spybot Search and Destroy and it finds more.)

out of curiousity, where did you get that information from??

every computer magazine (and a couple of non-computer magazines) that i've seen rank ad-aware and spybot: s&d as the top 2 anit-spyware programs you can get (and that's not because they're free).

anyways, if you can provide the linkage, then i might convert.

@ Hannibal- welcome to the darkside.

What i said is an opinion (im not going to get into an arguement or anything) but thats the way it worked for me. S&D and Adaware didnt find everything and they took too much time for me.

Well, I use Spy Sweeper, and it works wonders. But now I question myself if it was worth it because I had Firefox...so...

But still, I'm well protected. You should be too.

Microsoft has a program called Anti-Spyware and it can be found here

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

it is a beta but it works perfectly, it is simple, it is free and it found spyware that neither Ad-Aware or Search and Destroy found, on my computer. So unless you are a microsoft hater like most people today... you could give it a try. This doesn't mean I am a microsoft employee or even worse a microsoft lover or that I encourage usage of microsoft products, it just means that, in this case, "they" actually made a program that did a better job than the others and I repeat on my computer.

I put quotes on "they" here above because it's not microsoft's program it is someone else's but in typical microsoft fashion, microsoft bought the company that made it and now it's theirs...

in vino veritas

So in Microsith fashion they don't create anything great that works(without bugs) they use their money to buy some small company that creates something that works.

hate them if you like, but if they are producing a better product, then i'll use it anyway. now, if they did like IE and quit making it better after flushing out the competition, then i'll start making some noise. until then, i'll just keep my peace.
