Apprentices: A Legacy of the Force Fanfic [SPOILERS]

[Note: The following fan-fiction saga contains SPOILERS for the first
two novels in the Legacy of the Force series from LucasBooks
and Del Rey. If you do not wish to view these spoilers, please check
out my other fanfic, "Ya--Yevo', which only contains SPOILERS for
Revenge of the Sith. Whichever one you read, please enjoy!]

[Double Note: I still haven't figured out what era Tysy fits into!]

STAR WARS: Legacy of the Force: Apprentices

Forty years after A New Hope dawned in the galaxy, treachery
and evil have again risen. JACEN SOLO, the powerful son of HAN
and LEIA ORGANA SOLO, has betrayed the Jedi Order and turned
to the dark side of the Force. Jacen hopes to keep BEN SKYWALKER,
the adolescent son of LUKE and MARA JADE, as his faithful student.
Jacen is quickly carrying out his own plans to bring order to the
galaxy with the aid of LUMIYA, reigning Dark Lady of the Sith.

Meanwhile, a young Jedi Padawan, TYSY DVUKH, is unsure of
what role to play in the now full-scale war between Coruscant
and the Galactic Alliance and rebellious planets like Corellia. She
turns to Grand Master LUKE SKYWALKER for guidance as Jacen
travels down his dark path, following in his grandfather's shadow...

**************************

JEDI TEMPLE, CORUSCANT

The Padawan girl softly stepped toward the levitating Jedi Master,
being careful not to interrupt his meditation too soon. After all,
this was the famed Luke Skywalker, greatest Jedi since Yoda.
He had a lot on his mind--and his heart--with his nephew Jacen
having turned to the ways of killing prisoners during interrogation.

Even though he was deep in thought, communing with the Force,
Luke sensed the approaching student through it. He opened his
eyes and rubbed his temples, glad to see a friendly face. "Hello,
Padawan," he said with a gentle smile. "How may I assist you?"

"I don't know," said the girl sadly. "I feel so confused. Ever
since the Galactic Alliance Guard started doing raids on the
Corellian sections of Coruscant, I'm not sure if I'm on the
right side. I know the Corellians want to rearm and everything,
reactivate Centerpoint Station, but does that mean all the
Corellians here are on board with Thrackan Sal-Solo's plan?"

"Sal-Solo has passed," said Luke coolly, perhaps a little more so
than he should have. "He had an assassination contract put out
on my brother-in-law, Han Solo. As for Corellia's rearmament,
it shall continue. That means the Galactic Alliance Guard, with
my nephew as its head, will continue to crack down on it until
it disarms." Luke sighed and bowed his head. "That's all I know."

"Master," said the girl, "I want to know. I want to understand."

Luke took both of her hands. "Meditate with me," he replied.

The Padawan and the Master were soon lifted high into the still
air of the Jedi Temple. The girl crossed her short legs, as did Luke.
"Now, close your eyes," instructed Luke Skywalker, "and listen.
Listen to the Force. What is it telling you, Padawan?"

"That balance is needed," said the girl, "rather than passion and
knee-jerk reactions. This new war is causing so much pain already.
I can feel it in my bones, in my blood, in the Force itself! Master?"
She opened her eyes suddenly. "Will we both live through it?"

At that moment, Padawan Tysy Dvukh plunged to the floor.

Grand Master Luke stopped meditating and lowered himself down
to assist her. Such emotion in her, he thought, and such
love. If I help her channel it in the right way, so much the better!

JACEN SOLO'S APARTMENT, ROTUNDA ZONE, CORUSCANT

He couldn't. He wouldn't. Not with all the time and love
he had selflessly given to the woman he adored and his daughter.
He would not kill them, would not let Lumiya have her way!

And yet, Jacen Solo asked himself in the stillness of his
darkened apartment, wouldn't it be truly selfish of me to
let millions die in this war with Corellia? To abandon the galaxy
to an eternity full of bloodshed and chaos? I will not do so.
Isn't the true measure of sacrifice not only denying yourself
but also denying the happiness and peace of being with the ones
you love? Ah, Tenel Ka, Allana! How I love you, and how I wish--

Wait. Were Jacen's wife and daughter really the ones he had to kill?
He also loved his Uncle Luke, and his mother and father. His sister
Jaina, too, even though she was lost to him and he to her. What
if Lumiya did not know about his secret family yet, and had any
other one of the Solos or Skywalkers in mind to immortalize?

There was still that chance--still that hope that Jacen held
in his shattered heart. Then he remembered that the very reason he
had joined Lumiya and vowed to learn her teachings was so that
Luke Skywalker would not die. He had wished to save his
uncle, even though Luke was a Jedi. Was that not one of the
ultimate pieces of evidence Jacen needed to convince himself?

Jacen shook his head. If not Uncle Luke, could I slay Mother
or Father? Of course not! May it never be, through the will of
the Force. I would rather--see them sacrificed--than those two,
however. My two. My precious ones, who should never see war.

What was the Force's true destiny for him? What could he ever hope
to accomplish through slaying Tenel Ka and Allana? Could committing
such a heinous and unforgivable atrocity truly bring peace to the galaxy
for all time? How, Lumiya? Tell me how--and why!

If I may make a point, Tsysyacha, it might be more accurate to just say apprentice. I've not read Betrayal yet, but from what I know of Lumiya, she wants to be as much a Sith Lordas possible (no doubt to reassure herself that her illegitimate claim was not so). To do so, the Rule of Two couldn't be violated, which states that there can only be two Sith at a time. Although the Sith during the Clone Wars and later took Dark Jedi as extra apprentices, minions and servants, they could never be formally addressed as Sith.

The idea of your fic so far is an original one. The post NJO-era is one I'm very interested in, and I've seen nothing about it here. I've not read enough of your story to formulate a full opinion, but I look forward to more.

GALACTIC ALLIANCE GUARD HQ, QUADRANT A-89, GALACTIC CITY

Ben had come without being called. Jacen had summoned him before,
back when they had carried out a weapons raid and found some highly
suspicious "ingredients" in a shoddy-looking restaurant's kitchen freezer.
Shoulder launchers for small missiles, they were, and they were most
likely stored in response to the Galactic Alliance Guard's crackdown.

"Ah, Ben!" smiled Jacen. Though he had not been expecting a visit
from his thirteen-year-old cousin, he wasn't surprised or startled.
"What can I do for you?" Digital holomaps of Corellian sections on
Coruscant flashed on the walls of the GAG's headquarter office.

"I've come to talk to you about the girl," he said quietly. "The one
that was killed in custody, when you were asking her questions."

Jacen's jaw tightened. Careful, now, he thought. Hold
your anger. Keep it in check, because you don't want to hurt Ben.
You want to tell him the truth, but not too much. Not about Lumiya.

Not yet.

"That girl, or more accurately, that woman, was an assassin," Jacen
replied matter-of-factly. "Her name was Ailyn Habuur, and she was
hired to kill Han Solo. Your Uncle Han," he said, thinking of his father
with a heavy heart. He remembered how Han had squared his hands
on his hips and turned away from him after viewing Ailyn's bruised face.

"Did she tell you that, or did she somehow die before she got the chance?"

Jacen sighed. He knew the time would come, but he hadn't thought it
would come this soon. "Ben?" he asked. "Do you remember when
I told you that we all have to find out for ourselves how far we can
go, and what we're prepared to do? That you wouldn't know until
you had to do it?" Ben nodded. He had the feeling he'd hear worse.

"I killed Ailyn," confessed Jacen, "but not because I wished to. I felt
I had to. I didn't mean for her to die. I only wanted her to tell
me whom she'd been hired to kill. Mandalorians like her are tough, and
even though I smashed and bruised her face through the Force, she
wouldn't tell me. If Father had died before I found out, or you did--"

Ben nodded again, his heart sick with sadness and sorrow. Sadness
because Ailyn had died under duress, and sorrow for Jacen because
his cousin had yielded to what his own father, Luke, would have called
the dark side. "I know. I understand. I just don't want you to do it again!"

"I won't." Jacen stepped forward and embraced Ben firmly. "You have my
word of honor as a Jedi, and if I break it, may I be cast out and exiled."

Ben looked up into his mentor's eyes and knew that they were sincere.
I don't yearn to kill, Jacen's eyes said, but sometimes that's
what I must do in order to protect people. To protect the ones I love
from danger. Trust me, Ben. You know what it's like to defend yourself
and others. If you don't believe me, what more can I do to prove myself?

Skywalker's son stepped back and felt it was time for his second confession.

"I told Mom and Dad that I killed someone, and I felt really bad about it." After
a deep, weighty pause, Ben looked at Jacen. "I had to do that, too."
