What do you think?
Ok, I was watching ROTS last night, and when the duel between Anakin and Obi-wan commenced, I noticed a lot of opportunities for Obi-wan to claim victory. For example, when they were on the table right before the fistfight, Obi-wan still had his lightsaber, while Anakin was disarmed. Another opportunity he missed was when they were on the narrow beam over the lava, they simply could have force pushed each other off. Same scenario when the tower thing was in the lava river, and Anakin jumped over the waterfall onto the droid. Again, Obi-wan could have simply force pushed him.
What I want to hear opinions on is if Obi-wan was just being soft, the Force was with Anakin, or whatever else.

Obi-wan didn't want to kill Anakin, remember at the end of the duel he begged Anakin to stop.

He begged Anakin not to jump over his head (No - don't try it!), when Anakin coulda just jumped in front of him or gone around.

Oh well, I guess you can speculate and speculate some more. You should just watch the movie and enjoy it, not over-analyze it.

Huh, I don't believe I was over-analyzing, I was just watching the movie, and noticed this. It's not like I watched the same parts over and over just to prove it to myself..
Obi-Wan says "I will do what I must," in a tone of voice that sounds resigned to his destiny: destroy Anakin. In light of Anakin's fluke survivals, I think it was the will of the Force that kept him alive, to fulfill his destiny as Chosen One.

This movie is destined to have Anakin lose his legs, and Obi Wan to lose his life, no matter what. GL wanted it that way

Like MC said, Obi-Wan didn't want to kill him. From the beginning of the duel to end of it, he didn't want to kill him. And at the end of the duel, Obi-Wan choose not to kill him.

You souldn't even ask that question! If you understood the movie, you would realise that Obi-Wan didn't intend to kill Anakin at all, and he didn't.

Yeah, but he burned up anyways, so Obi thought he died.

Exactly. And Obi-Wan didn't want to kill Darth Vader himself. It was Vader's choice to jump and attack. Obi-Wan suggested he not do that.

I agree with what's been said. Obi-Wan didn't want to kill Anakin/Vader so he was probably being more defensive. Like Commander said, a great example of this is where he tells Vader not to jump to him on the hill and he does it anyways. There Kenobi had no choice but to kill him.
I also wouldn't say they could just force push each other off stuff, I think they're good enough jedi to resist those kinds of attacks.

I know Obi Wan couldn't bring himself to kill Vader, but don't you think slowly burning to death is a little more painfull than being snapped by a lightsabre?

Yup, but maybe Obi-wan would feel less guilty if the lava did the job for him, instead of doing it himself. But then of course there are people that argue that it would still haunt Obi-wan through his inaction to do anything about it.

Well, then again Ani did not want to kill Obi either, he could have easily pulled a fint saying he is sorry, and pull out one of those "bad guy's sneak attack" on him, and it would have worked due to Obi's emotions. That, added to the fact that he is really confused, and just having force choked his love in anger without her enjoying it.
SO technically both of them are not using their full power?

Obi wan didn't want to kill him because he was his apperintic and because he knew he would have to fight it to bring balance to the force he still had faith in Anakin but then he couldn't take it any longer and sliced off his legs and left him to burn
