The auto save IS the point of no return. Once it says 'AUTOSAVE! POINT OF NO RETURN" You can't go back into the regular levels of the game, which pretty much means once you help to free Lili from the restraints, no going back to camp and such. And to get to the lower floors of the asylum before the PONR, there's the elevator you used to get up to the upper floors, just go back in and you can go back down. HOWEVER, if your at Loboto's lab, there's another elevator around the walkway that'll take you to the asylum grounds.
