What are you listening to right now? (Part 2 - Read first post!)

Mod note: Continued from this large thread.

Like the original thread, tell us what your favourite song is that you are listening to. Keep in mind that this thread is not just for listing what's currently running in your music player.

Do not only post the name of the song and artist, that isn't very interesting to read. Describe what kind of music is it and why you like it, so that others with the same taste in music may get ideas for new artists and songs to check out.

Posts that only contain the name of a song and artist (or some variant thereof) and nothing more will be deleted as spam without notice.

I'm currently listening to The Dance by Within Temptation, a Dutch symphonic metal band. They mix some celtic-sounding influences with heavy metal and beautiful song by the band's female lead singer into a very nice merger of styles that tends to give you goosebumps.

Funny that you mention Within Temptation, as I was just listening to Angels (sang by the same band) while reading this.

Let's see... the music is, sad? Well, it's not really happy, let's put it that way.

My flavors of the moment:

Paramore - Emergency (Crab Mix)
Paramore is an indie pop-punk band with a rocking sound. Their lead singer, 17-year old Hayley Williams, is quite the gifted vocalist despite her relatively young age. Emergency is my favorite song of theirs off their first CD All We Know Is Falling simply because of Hayley's awesome vocals and the superb guitar riffs. That, and I'm a sucker for rock bands with female vocalists. :3

Red Jumpsuit Apparatus - Cat and Mouse
I actually first heard of this band as I was playing Madden 07. (FYI, the EA Sports series of video games usually have kicking rad soundtracks). I liked the song they had on it "In Fate's Hands", so I decided to check out the rest of their CD. It's really easy to listen to and I like almost everything on it. "Cat and Mouse" is one of their slower songs, but I think it might be the best of the bunch, thanks to the charming melody and quietly poignant vocals.

bond - Explosive
Mmmm, classical pop. bond is a string quartet with a decidedly modern take on classical music. "Explosive" epitomizes their style, with its catchy harmony and use of modern sound effects. It also helps the members of the band are kinda hot.

Hmmm, as far as new music goes, I've been listening to the theme song from Casino Royal a lot. It's You Know My Name by Chris Cornell (the former lead singer of Soundgarden and the current lead singer of Audioslave).

Oh, I've also been listening to an obscene amount of The Decemberists new album The Crane Wife. They're an indie band which would normally scare me but these guys have a very good sound and seriously rock at what they do. I highly recommend picking up this one.

Yes - Roundabout - Fragile

I've had the bass line to the 2nd theme stuck in my head all day. And it is a killer bass riff, and bass tone.

It's still amazing to me how organic these early prog albums sounded. And how much they managed to layer with very early multi-track technology. These were probably 8-, or possibly 16-track recordings, and mixing desks with no automation. Nowadays we have almost unlimited ProTools sessions with track counts in the hundreds, and they still don't sound nearly as crisp or interesting.

Right now I am listening to Ritchie Blackmore's (ex Deep Purple, Rainbow) second solo group Blackmore's Night album The Village Lanterne. The bands music is a mix of rock and folk with a heavy influence from Renaissance music.

Bond is great. I love their take on many classical pieces. I have four of their CDs. I enjoy relaxing to their music. Of course, four hot ladies playing classical instruments is always fun. (Well, if they are good anyway.)

At the moment, I'm listening to Steppenwolf - Magic Carpet Ride. Wonderful song. I like a lot of seventies music. As I'm typing, the song changed to Born to be wild. My motor is running! (Yea, that was a dumb joke. heh)

I like that song a lot as well, it's a good one.

I got a new David Bowie CD (David Bowie) semi-recently and I got my dad the Beatles Love CD so I've been playing the hell out of those. I really like Love, how they've mixed the songs together. It's really well done. And it's cool to hear Bowie before he made it big.

Enough talking more pictures!

Anyway, I'm listening to plenty of stuff right now.

Indie-rock band Malajube's Montréal -40°C which is an awesome song. Coming to America soon too.

Also, The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again. Beautiful song about promised changes that never came.

Finally, Snoop Dogg's That's that ****. Don't know why I find it so catchy...

Oh, almost forgot, also listening to the OC's theme song. I kinda like the song, the serie is meh, but I had a weird dream with Misha Barton. I don't find her that attractive (eat! eat!!!) but it's stuck in my head :S

Currently I'm into Youngblood Brass Band. It's like a New Orleans street brass quintet(tuba, trombone, trumpet, saxes, drums) mixed with a DJ and an MC. It's basically a hip hop brass band-- wicked cool. You can listen to them on their site, http://www.youngbloodbrassband.com/site/site_index.html, and at http://myspace.com/youngbloodbrass

Yeah, Phantom Planet can be somewhat addicting. The lead singer can't really sing... but somehow the songs are still neat. Check out Always On My Mind , All Over Agian , Anthem, Lonely Day, So I Fall Again , Recently Distressed , and One Ray of Sunlight,

Man with a Mission - Bad Religion

I love this band, they pretty much changed the way I thought about music, and in particular, Punk Rock. When I first got their 1989 album "No Control", I thought it was the best thing I'd heard at the time, and its only 26 minutes long. Their later material is far more melodious, or is that harmonious? Whichever, but the fact still remains that they are one of my favourite bands, and probably always will be.

I just got an Acoustic version of The Cranberries song Zombie. It's quite good but there's nothing like the original.

New to the Cranberries? Check these out: Dreams, Linger, When You're Gone, Zombie, Ridiculous Thoughts, and How for starters.

As a person who like different types of music, I try to keep open minds about what is good and what is bad.

A particular favorite is called the Storm is Over. I can't tell you the artist but it is one of those soundtrack pieces from the movie Hardball. It brings a refreshing look to things with its gospel choir and flavor coming to it. It portrays the theme of seeing thelight at the end of the tunnel.

Rush - Distant Early Warning - Grace Under Pressure

Middle period Rush at it's best. Shorter, poppier, more simplistic song forms coupled with Neil Peart's egghead lyrics (in this case: on the effects of environmental degradation.)

I always thought the guitar track on this album was a little "over-processed" sounding... but it does work for this song.

I'm glad the band has gone back to more organic sounds in later days though...

One Fine Day- Acapella is my favorite music genre. Its just soothing to me, helps to relax. I usually listen to acapella and oldies (real old).

Rap and Techno when I want to get amped up, usually listen to it during workouts.

BBM - Around the Next Dream album.

This was a one off supergroup that came about the time that Cream getting inducted to the R&R HoF. Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker wanted to at least a reunion tour. But Eric Clapton wasn't having any of that. So they invited Gary Moore to join them. The album is a combination of Prog rock and hard rocking blues.

Is this a remake of Genesis' Land of Confusion?

Surprisingly it is a remake. I would characterize Genesis’ original version as being cheerful and light hearted about a semi depressing subject. Disturbed version is more depressing and more honest. I like both, but Disturbed’s did a very good job of redoing the song and making it their own.

Let's Face the Music - Taco Ockerse

Only discovered this the other week. His musical "niche" seems to be doing New Wave covers of depression-era oldies. I'm tempted to go a buy his first album, which came out in 1981 I think he also released a cover album, composed entirely of Glenn Miller songs, and Glenn Miller is just awesome on his own

Deep Dish - Dreams

It's an old Fleetwood Mac song, and i just love the way the implemented it in this new song. Much better then those 'fake 80's Dance songs' like 'Moving too fast' recently, r*aping a Phil Collins song.
Yes...I like 80's music, and can't stand abuse of it.

Dude, that's awesome. I've listened to that song 157 times since December. More than any song I have listened to from my iPod. I like that song a lot too.

I am also listening to Casino Royale soundtrack. It is composed by David Arnold, who happens to have the same last name as I do.

I also take a fancy to Audioslave, mainly due to Chris Cornell being the lead singer to it.

At the moment, I have started to listen to some German-type of music. But, I am sure that many of you guys have heard of them.

Rammstein is what I am primarily listening too. A pal of mine hooked me up with a bunch of his songs. About 30. And I've been listening to it very often. The songs that I have a favouritism towards are
  • Zwitter ("Hermaphrodite")
  • Sonne ("Sun")
  • Feuer Frei! ("Fire at will!" or "Open fire!", literally "Fire freely!")
  • Mein Teil ("My part")
  • Benzin ("Petrol" or "Gasoline")
  • Reise, Reise ("Arise, Arise" or "Journey, journey")
  • Der Meister ("The master")
  • Keine Lust ("No desire" or "Don't feel like it")
  • Stein Um Stein ("Stone by stone")

Some other bands I have interests in are Megaherz which is now defunct. This is also a German-metal type band (it's really the only metal type of music I take a liking too). I like Wer Bist Du? (Who Are You?), the song.

Another German band I have (the last one) is Eisbrecher, in which, the leader singer was also from Megaherz. The song, Verggismeinnicht ("Forget me not"), would top the list for moi.

That's what I've been listening to at the current moment.

Pain--Three Days Grace (Pottsie will like this one)

Three Days Grace is one of the coolest rock bands at the moment, and I would recommend anybody who likes rock to listen to the, it would be worth it, also, listen to:

Both by TDG, they are very good.

Blind Guardian's Nightfall in Middle-Earth This is a concept album based on J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarrilion book. It takes different events from the book and makes them into songs. Musically the band is a combination of power metal and progressive metal. This is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Great song, my father used to play it on our road trips when I was a kid. Good stuff when I was 6 years old and still is.

Well, I am still listening to some Rammstein, and those other German bands I've listed in my other post.

But, I also enjoy listening to music that comes from movie soundtracks. Generally, the orchestral-based music. For example, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Casino Royale top my list.

Foundations of Stone which is composed by Howard Shore from the Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers soundtrack. This is the first song on the soundtrack. And is one of my favourite songs from this specific soundtrack. I also like the music from that is composed during the battle of Helm's Deep.

From Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, there are a few songs I have on my iPod that listen to frequently. Wheel of Fortune, The Kraken, and Davy Jones. These songs are composed by Hans Zimmer.

I also listen to the soundtracks of David Arnold of Casino Royale and John Williams of Star Wars.

The Dregs - Bloodsucking Leeches - Industry Standard

Steve Morse is a force of nature on the guitar. Kind of scary that he can play that fast, that melodically inventive, and still pick each and every note. Then pick up a classical guitar and take your head off with some perfectly played Bach like classical thing with counterpoint to spare.

Don't believe me?

Well, here's a couple of video clips I came across the other day to illustrate these 2 points:

Steve Morse - Tumeni Notes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mk_GMvIea6s

Steve Morse - Classical-ish Pieces: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yIu7UA-823Y

Watch em' and weep... I know I do. Damn, I wish I could play like that...

Oh yeah... I almost forgot his country chicken-pickin' side...

Right now I am listening to "Gary Jules - Mad World". It is a really good song if you listen closley to the lyrics. It was also featured on a couple game advertisments so that is another reason I like listening to it.

I have defied gods and demons.
I am your shield, I am your sword.
I know you; your past, your future.
This is the way the world ends...

Legion Of The Damned - Bleed For Me
Good song even though I'm not a Legion Of The Damned fan.

And about Within Temptation it is 1 of the best bands we have here in The Netherlands yet they still suck, that really tells something about the music here in The Netherlands.

EDIT: About Rammstein, here they are really overrated and the music isn't really great but live they are amazing.

When I first got their 1989 album "No Control", I thought it was the best thing I'd heard at the time, and its only 26 minutes long. Their later material is far more melodious, or is that harmonious? Whichever, but the fact still remains that they are one of my favourite bands, and probably always will be.
Bad Religion are very good, my favourite album would be "Stranger Than Fiction" though...I hope you've heard of the Ramones, THE best punk band, period!

Three Days Grace is one of the coolest rock bands at the moment, and I would recommend anybody who likes rock to listen to the, it would be worth it, also, listen to:

Animal I have become
I hate everything about you

Both by TDG, they are very good.
Also:
Scared
Just Like You
Burn
Home
Are You Ready

I've been listening to a lot of All That Remains lately, a very good American metalcore band, songs I'd recommend: This Calling, Six, The Deepest Gray, Tattered on my Sleeve, It Dwells in Me...

Also check out Plus 44, the new band from Blink 182's Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker...It's good stuff!

Who hasn't heard the Ramones? They're awesome. Stranger Than Fiction is a cracking album, I was listening to part of it yesterday in fact! Another one of my favourite bands are the Clash, I have all their albums except for their last one.

Right now, I'm listening to alot of Psychobilly/Rockabilly, namely bands like Koffin Kats, Reverend Horton Heat, The Astounding Roy Gorbisons, Nekromantix, Stray Cats, stuff like that. Basically once I devour one music genre, only then do I move on to the next one

As in "here" do you mean Germany?

I wouldn't mind going to one of their concerts. I've never been to one before. It'd be pretty neat to go one.

It's my Life by Bon Jovi from the album, Crush. The album was released in 2000. It's really the only song from "Bon Jovi".

Did you know it was the number one song in Finland at one point? XP

Got Medieval 2 Total War last weekend and extracted the We are all one song that plays during the credits. I just love Angela Van Dyck's errr...angelic voice. Really nice song to listen to when you're watching the soldiers march in the background.
