You can theoretically sharpen the decorative ones, but it's not worth it--the blades are weak. A 'real' one that has been forged properly and is good quality is going to run you about $800-$1000. The special 'forged by the legendary weaponsmith' ones could easily run 10 times that or more because of all the time involved to forge the blade and do the fancy decorative stuff.
If you have a proper sword that's been sharpened to a fine edge, you can do some serious damage to people, including yourself. If you merely drop the edge or tip of a properly sharpened sword on your foot from any height more than a few inches, for instance, it can actually go through it.
Mind you, I'm not recommending you do this....

Damnit, Joe! My screen's only 19"
Thanks for the pricing info, Jae. While one day, I might feasibly buy a 'regular katana,' I wouldn't buy a special katana unless I had kick-ass training.

I got a real katana, I sharpen it 2 times a month, and it cuts nicely, payed $1,500 for it, worth every cent.

Talked to a guy that sells decorative katanas on a mall, I asked him and told me that he could get me one, no questions asked, I payed him and now I have my own katana.
Though I have get to use it on a thief dumb enough to enter my house.

One of my friends had some decorative swords that got stolen at his apt. Equip the katana with a wrist-exploding device in the hilt like on Blade. Sure he can pick it up, but when he's dripping blood everywhere, he's more likely to drop and run (and you can track him and devour his soul easier).

Joe, I do not approve of this page stretching.
"A few times in my life I've had moments of absolute clarity. When for a few brief seconds, the silence drowns out the noise and I can feel rather than think, and things seem so sharp and the world seems so fresh. I can never make these moments last. I cling to them, but like everything, they fade. I've lived my life on these moments. They pull me back to the present and I realize that everything is exactly the way it was meant to be."
