Playing around with HL2
So I just picked up Half-Life 2 (yeah I know, I'm late to the party). I was wondering what sp mods or goofy/fun console commands there are. I'm barely 1/4 of the way into the game. Any suggestions?
This is just my opinion....

Two words: Gary's Mod
Makes you God of the HL2 universe. Brilliant mod that makes the whole game customizable, lets you spawn your own levels pause and pose the action, or just lets you dink around.
Take a look here It's a hilarious comic done completely with gary's mod.
Have fun
And Shepherds we shall be
For thee, my Lord, for thee.
Power hath descended forth from Thy hand
Our feet may swiftly carry out Thy commands.
So we shall flow a river forth to Thee
And teeming with souls shall it ever be.
In Nomeni Patri Et Fili Spiritus Sancti.
OMG Jedi Knight 4!!!

Indeed.
Also, if you want fun console commands, wait til IG sees this post. Anyone else remember his first posts in the JKA section?

Did someone say HL2 console commands?
http://www.garrysmod.com/wiki/?title=User:IG-64
These are a bit advanced, but they're pretty nifty.
As has been said, get Garry's Mod. It's $10 for the latest version (on Steam), but you can still get version 9 for free. Those console commands should work in either version of Garry's Mod, and it's been awhile since I've tested it, but they should work without Garry's Mod too.
I've messed around with HL2 and Garry's Mod quite a bit, so if you have any questions I'll try and answer them when I can.

Just to make sure I have this right, I need to pick up a copy of CS:S then I can get gary's mod?
Thanks IG for the link. Can I use some of those commands in the base HL2?
This is just my opinion....

Be wary of gary's mod. Repeatedly crashed on my machine and on one crash, totally ruined everything. Fried my usb ports, messed with my sound...not cool.
While I had it running though it was definitely cool. Making a plane out of junk and flying it around was awesome.

If you have HL2 then I don't think you need CS:S, although it does add to the weapons and stuff you can spawn, I don't think it's necessary. And those commands should work in base HL2. Try it out

Are you sure it wasn't a power surge or something? I've never heard of a program physically damaging hardware unless it was a result of overclocking.

The game could have been overstressing his video card. Heat or a lack of power would easily fry anything inside of a computer.

They should work in base HL2, but remember the autoexec.cfg file goes in the hl2/cfg folder. If you're having trouble finding the folder, it should be "valve/steam/steamapps/<name>/half-life 2/hl2/cfg"

Other good SP mods... Half Life 2: Substance is the best SP mod available.
The mods for HL2 have been generally weak and haven't made anything like CS or DoD. Closest thing was Dystopia, but it's lost a lot of steam.

The crash was a total system crash to shut down/restart...same thing as a power surge. My machine easily handles it and HL2 and it seems to be just an isolated occurence with me ...I wouldn't worry too much about it. It really is a blast.

IG, is there a way to toggle a key for the bullet time thing you have listed? I tried looking at the substance mod files and can't seem to figure out the bind.
This is just my opinion....

Well, the way I have it you just hold the key down, which I find works better, but if you want a toggle, I don't know what to tell you. The only way I ever do that is just bind 2 keys right next to each other, one for "on" and one for "off."
