Anyone here a graphic designer?

If anyone here is, I need your help. For my Ethics class, we have to do a Research Project on a profession we would like to be once we get out of college, and I was thinking of being a Graphic Designer.

The only thing is, for part of it, we are supposed to find a Moral Dilemma in Graphic Design. So, if anyone here is a graphic designer, and has encountered a moral dilemma, please reply to this thread. By moral dilemma, I mean moral problems that could arise with what you do, or in your workplace. All I need is a couple paragraphs with as much detail as you can possibly go into it.

Thanks all! =)

Just a short but simple example: A group of pro-abortionists/neonazis/furries want you to make them a new logo. You disagree with their views, but completing their request would pay you a lot of cash. What do you say?

Love how you saved the worst for last in that example.

To Pie: lolzzzz, but, the thing is, I need an actual dilemma, not an example of one. I mean, all the occupations I would consider going into (Graphic design, translator) I can't find stories of moral dilemmas on. I'm sure there are people who experienced something like the example you posted, but they didn't do a report of it. And I don't know any graphic designers in real life, so for me, its becoming near impossible to find...

Well, I've done some design work on demand, but haven't really had any moral dilemmas. Good luck though, hopefully someone here have had similar experiences.

Assume the company you work for wants you to make them a graphical, 3D design of Muhammad for a game or promotion of some sort.

Perhaps you are contacted to create a kinky CGI porn of some sort, too.

Well, one fairly obvious dilemma would be if you have lived a sheltered, Victorian-morality sort of life and are given a million bucks, if you spend the rest of your life developing fetish 3D porn movies. What do you do?

I think most of the moral dilemmas that would come as a graphic designer would be issues of company management and corporate sponsor. Sacrifice of your artistic license, etc.

It's probably not too different than any artists job. There always comes a time when you have to make a decision to choose either to get the job done, no matter the cost (giving up your freedom of personal expression) or hold the high ground on your principles of the love of your art, risking your position with a company.

Moral dilemmas in matters of art I think are based more on what you feel you want to accomplish with your work, rather than doing the work. They have the starving artist cliche for a reason.

I'm not a graphic designer or anything, but I'd say that idea would be a good place to start as far as writing something up on that subject goes. To get the maximum sale, or to get the message across.

Well, it isn't quite graphic design, but my brother faced a moral dilemma involving a very bad boss who advocated and enforced the company's use of illegal software while he was working as a web designer. He struggled with it for quite a while and ultimately ended up leaving the company.

Oh, I once heard a radio ad asking for people to snitch companies for using pirated software and being rewarded for it. So I guess that may be something.

I don't know any moral dilemmas off the top of my head other than the classic artist v money example... but man, it's weird to think we're all in college now...
