Well, a lot more people bought PS3s than HD-DVD drives or 360 attachments.

I'll be waiting for MS to make a Blu-Ray drive for the 360.

Such a pity, now Sony have got their way we can expect them to jack up the price of films by at least 50% and probably add extra "anti piracy" software that will f*** up peoples computers.

Since I don't own an HDTV it's not that important to me right now. But at least I know what high-definition format I'll need to go with when I do decide to lay down the cash for an HDTV.

VHS lasted 30 years, DVD will last about 10-15 years, Blu-ray will last about 5-10 years. This sux.

I doubt that. DVD is here to stay the course. I can assure you that I'll "upgrade" to Bluray over my dead body. First of all, I don't notice any freakin' difference between standard and hidef. Second, I don't have any HD tech, period. And finally, Bluray (and other HD tech) is too expensive. If the prices ever manage to drop down to what DVD is now, I'd could probably be convinced to convert.

If you don't have a hd-tv of course you're not gonna see any difference. But I can say that it is totally worth upgrading to one. I love my hd-tv, 360, and the HD-DVD player attachment. Absolutely worth the money (since I only payed about $100 for the dvd attachement). It makes my PS3 purchase pretty much inevitable and I was only gonna buy it the first place so I could have both formats.

If you're ever in Colorado look me up and I'll show you the difference. It may just change your mind.

You don't even have to go to Colorado.

To be honestly I used to think relatively the same thing, SWP. I hadn't done a side by side comparison but I was perfectly content with DVDs as they were, so I didn't see the purpose in hi-def. But not too long ago I just walked into the television section of my local TigerDirect and they were showcasing their HDTVs all playing Blu-ray versions of Spiderman 2. It was so crisp and clear that I was shocked. At first it was so different that I almost didn't like it, but after sitting and watching for a while on one of the nicer television models I was astounded at the difference. And while I definitely would agree with you that I personally won't have the money to upgrade to hi-def for a while, I must admit that Blu-ray is absolutely astounding and simply leaps and bounds ahead of DVDs.

Damn, I was really pulling for HD DVD. Now we're going to have to deal with more of Sony's bull****.

Meh. To tell you the truth, I'm perfectly fine with dvd. The problem Sony's going to have in getting Blu-ray to take over dvd is that the format leap isn't that large. Going from VHS to DVD was huge - you went from an analog medium to a digital kind. Greatly improved quality, no rewinds, easier copying, better structural and data integrity, smaller size, ect. Blu-ray, however, is essentially a dvd with just more memory. It's a noticeable improvement, sure, but only if you upgrade the rest of your system to accommodate it. Aside from the improved quality, the differences between the two are minor, with the exception that regular dvds don't have their dirty, greasy, and ultimately venereal infested way with your wallet, unlike blu-ray. This is going to be the major hurdle for Sony to overcome.

Same here. Too expensive now, but if in the future the prices drop, I may convinced eventually. I waited a long time to buy a DVD-player, too.

Yeah, but you forgot the blue coloring on the discs, now that's cool!

So going from VHS to DVD is like going from NES to Wii, and Blu-Ray is like a PS3... Blu-Ray is a PS3.

I love my analogy.

It sucks cause I was pulling for HD DVD. But I guess it was bound to happen with either HD or Blu Ray winning. I own a HD attachment and admit it sucks but atleast the prices of HD DVD's on the shelves will drop and those who have already purchased the HD players will be able to stock up and still enjoy HD at a cheap price. I'll buy the Blu Ray attachment when the 360 comes out with one or just get a stand alone player if prices are good enough then.

It's all about marketing. At the end of the day, Blu-Ray has a cooler name. I mean who needs another acronym?

I bet someone at Warner Bros and Disney thought that too.

It's more about who could afford to fork over more of the hundreds of millions to studios for their 'exclusive' contracts than it is about marketing. Or perhaps that's the same thing, I'm not sure.

Somehow im not surprised that bluray won. Oh well, another reason to buy a PS3 in the coming future.

Haven't they been working on that since like... a month after the 360 came out? As a just in case.

I'm just glad the format war is over. I won't be getting a HDTV any time soon (especially with the dearth of HD channels available in the UK), but I hope to build a new PC some time this year, so now I know to get a Blu-Ray drive for it and a compliant monitor and try out Blu-Ray movies on that.

Having said that, I won't be replacing my DVD collection any time soon. It's taken me this long to build it up after I ditched all my VHS tapes and there's not that much incentive to replace them all with Blu-Ray versions. It will be up and coming movies that I will start to get in the Blu-Ray format (after the price drops a bit).
