Question Xbox-powered PC for the Price of an xbox?

I speculated last year that when xbox is released, we would not be able to buy a PC with the equivalent power of an Xbox for the price of an xbox.

Well, xbox will be here in 6 days. A listing of some dirt cheap pricing for PIII 733s from pricewatch shows that it's not likely you'll get a PC with xbox-equivalent power for the price of an xbox. You'll have to pay a little more. Cheapest complete PIII 733 system I found came in at $312.00 Xbox retails at $299. And the $312 'complete PIII 733' doesn't even come close to matching the xbox hardware.

I suppose one could dig around pricewatch for separate components and add them up to find comparable prices. Feel free if you like!

Here's the list of PIIIs from pricewatch.

Thumbs up

That explains the "loss" that M$ is incurring selling them at.

And yes, as others have pointed out, selling consoles at a loss as a marketing strategy is nothing new, companies do that all the time, then make money off of games, with jacked up liscensing fees, etc.

Heck, movie theatres don't even make their money on ticket sales, they make money on concessions. ; )

Lets not forget that no consol would be able to do everything a computer can do. I'd spend 13 extra bucks for email, web surfing, word processing, gaming, programming, digital editing, and all the other things a real computer can do. The ability to upgrade is always nice to :P.

Let's not forget the reason for this comparison. Gaming. Today, it would cost you more $ to get a PC with comparable computing power for the purpose of gaming than an xbox. In any case, consoles aren't designed to replace the PC.

Even so, there is now a linux kernel for PSX that will allow you to do some level of computing on a console. See www.runix.ru

There's also the PS2 Linux kit. Right now it's only out in Japan, but I think I saw something about a release in the USA and Europe.
