How do you feel about Valentine's Day?
With February 14th coming up, romance is in the air...or is it? That depends on how you feel about Valentine's Day! How do you feel about it? ;o

It's a ridiculous day, really.
I'm single, but I think the whole thing is a waste of time - if one really loves the person they are with, they shouldn't need to lavish them with affection, as it would surely be demonstrated during a day-to-day relationship.

True, but it's nice to have an extra special day between the two of you.
I voted for "good thing" and "will be doing something" (apparently the only one so far) but let me tell you, it's still a pain in the butt to think of what to do. I've never been good at getting gifts &etc.

Given my horrible luck at getting a girlfriend or a boyfriend, I'm understandably cynical about the whole thing. However, I'm indifferent about what other people do on that day, unless they flaunt it in my face.

How do I say, "It's a good thing, but only if you give a crap."
Because I don't.
Tough I understand the sentiment.
I'm done putting links in my signature because every time I do it just links to some old crap I've long since stopped updating.

Yeah, Valentine'd day is a good thing for those who have a significent other...if not, it makes celebrating awkard...that or sad Just sit in the park and watch all the happy couples, and realize that the only thing next to you...is your dog...or whatever your pet is...heh
But besides that, it's pretty good.

Well, yeah, it's a nice excuse to get together and forget your problems. But Valentine's day here is still pretty, pretty far away. At this time of year, I actually tend to break up my relationships for some other reasons.

It's great if you've got someone; rather awkward if you don't (and it puts unnecessary pressure on you to find someone).

Firstly, I think this is an appropriate video for the occasion.
Now, I think it is a good thing/good day. I'm currently debating going out with a certain someone. I Would do something, indeed.
I'll admit I used to be cynnical, perhaps even pessimistic about it.
Recent times and events are causing me to put all that on hold.
While the way of the lone ranger is something to behold, especially if you aspire to be like Miyamoto Musashi in the least, one has to evaluate his/her life at some point and see if it isn't maybe a possibility to find a significant other--someone to share with for a while at least.
You only live once. You're only young and beautiful once--regardless how you think you look. You won't last forever. So why not give it a shot--give it a few shots in fact? --I mean it for real.
C'mon fellow LF nerds. Get away from your computers and your game consoles for awhile. GET UP! GET OUT! Go look for someone or you're gonna end up like this.
Don't make me get the hose, dammit!

Thank you... I didn't know you had it on you, my friend.
--Yeah, we guys aren't the best a thinking of romantic stuff. Even geniuses. I've learned it's the simple small things that make a difference...whatever that means...I guess showing implicitly you kinda care--even if you have a sandpaper beard on your face and are a little rough around the edges personality wise. Don't ask me how...(I'm still figuring it out, myself)...

Yes, I'd be interested to know as well...
Possibility of an idea: Yes...I believe he is referring to a wicken holiday or something that used to be around this time of year called "goats whip" day. --though I'm not sure any of you wanna hear the explanation...here goes nothing:
Originally it was in late march. It is believed to predate easter and obviously valentines. Sort of as a predecessor of both.
It was to signify
1) timing of winter's end and blooming of spring
2) whips for "fun" and eggs were around as the signs of fertility
So what does this have to do with goat's whips? (getting to that)
Well, the last week of march was the supposed time where a group of people would get together, both men and women. Said get together was naked and there were these little thin strips of goat's skin around pules of eggs. They would go around, grab a whip or two, and go around and whip those they liked. Also, they had lots of food of all kinds to eat--not just the eggs.
You were basically encouraged to glutton and orgy in order to celebrate life.
--I'm dead serious--at least one of my little 'witchcraft' celebrating friends told me about it and has shown me videos of her family and friends (after the kids go to bed and the underaged LEAVE). There are still people who celebrate this.
Love me, I win.
Hate me, I win.
Ignore me, I've got exactly what I wanted.
Love me or hate me, you're still thinking of me either way.

Yeah, you're essentially Correct. The Romans had the festival of Lupercalia from the 13th to the 15th of February. Essentially, it was a festival to promote fertility, dedicated to Lupa, the surrogate wolf mother of Romulus and Remus.
The festivities usually entailed the sacrifice of a goat or two, and then they were skinned, and a certain caste of priest adorned themselves with the hides on their heads. These hides were known as Februa, which is obviously how we got the name February. The priests, adorned in the hides, ran around the city, with the women lining up to receive lashes from whips made from the goat hides, to promote fertility.
Oh, and there's St. Valentine and his eventual martyrdom, but hey, that's a bore pagan rituals are much more interesting. And titillating. Just remember that most holidays considered sacred in christian dogma are all derived from polytheistic pagan cult-like rituals.

Who cares if it was a pagan holiday 9 zillion years ago. It's called Valentine's day in the 21st century.
I'm going to spend time with my honey. I don't care about gifts, flowers, chocolates, or cards, though he'll probably give me all of the above because that's his way of expressing love (especially if he writes poetry in the card). I just want to spend time with him alone. We love each other and do a lot of things together, but it's always nice to remember a special day of love in the middle of the busy-ness of life.

Well, even being married I don't really care about Valentines Day. Sometimes my husband does something special, other times he doesn't. Either way, I don't need a 'special day' to know how much he loves me, and vice versa, so meh.

Commercialized? Yes--but if you're poor all you have is your thoughtfulness and the 'nice idea'. If nothing else, it is as good an excuse to be with that special someone as any. Spend a little time together.
Otherwise if you are into your vaunted lone-ranger-dom...single, apathy or hate it is perfectly allright.

More or less.
However 'pagan' is such a generalized term for that which is not christian.
Glad you at least had some stance or where-with-all to answer specifically.

Tubes? --what 'bout LCD?
Just that pagan is such a generalized term 's all.
Well, I suppose if you haven't got a reason to celebrate it, then let it pass you by. --Not 3 months ago I was very pessimistic-more than I'd ever been. I guess I'm on the roller coaster now and the high times are a-comin' for me.
Seriously people, you can ignore the whole corporate aspect by sticking to the main theme/idea and being creative without huge expenses. Try it sometime. What's a matter? Afraid you'll liiiiiiiiiike it?!--If nothing else you get some pretty nice handfulls of.....stuff.
