Best Setting in a Video Game?

Which games do you think have had the most well-developed settings? I don't necessarily mean ones that were really really immersive (though they might have been), but games that had extensive backstory and interesting locations.

Battle is a pure form of expression. It is heart and discipline, reduced to movement and motion. In battle, the words are swept away, giving way to actions-- mercy, sacrifice, anger, fear. These are pure moments of expression.

Word.

Other ones I liked, but definitely could've been better were Mass Effect and any game that had to do with Middle Earth. Unfortunately, the only games that really went into depth were the Battle For Middle Earth games and those were short lived.

Myst/Riven, Fallout, Tron 2.0, Team Fortress 2, etc.

Basically, it's any game which isn't set in some overly redundant atmosphere including almost every DnD and high medieval fantasy game. You know that RPGs are getting stale when no one has seen a decent game set during the Classical Maya or Middle Egypt eras.

I thought the Forgotten Realms setting of Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale were nice, and at the time I played them I knew little about D&D.

The Fallout setting is a new favorite of mine as I didn't play the other games prior to playing Fallout 3 but have since bought Fallout Trilogy and am working my way through them.

Fable and Oblivion are nice as well and of course I've found few worlds as immersive as the Star Wars Galaxy.

The KOTOR games are an obvious choice, the depth that went into the character's backgrounds and the entire atmosphere of the game make it very addictive.

Fable remains one of my all time favorites for the XBOX, and not just because it's fun to play and has an awesome list of spells and taunts but because each town has it's own little backstory and it's almost like a game in itself. I've spent a lot of time after beating Fable TLC building up my stealth points to max by stealing items and selling them back and breaking into houses at night. The story itself, the music, gameplay, and aesthetically the towns are all pleasing especially Bowerstone imo (one of the few places in Fable that I would live if it were a real place) .

Wing Commander.

'nuff said, the game was an interactive movie for crying out loud! Not only that, but the Confederation-Kilrathi War is probably one of the best conflicts in video game history. If you've played X-Wing, same idea, except more emphasis on Story and less on blowing up junk.

For a history of the Confederation-Kilrathi War click here.

That's from the WC:Saga project, a fan-project to 'create' a new chapter in Wing Commander History, it takes place during WC3 from a perspective other than Blair's (The main character who is, coincidentally, played by Mark Hamil... and I mean actually played by him in WC3, 4, and Prophecy when they were using Full Motion Video sequences... very interesting stuff!)

And, when a character is played by Malcolm McDowell, you know it's going to be some good stuff!

you know what, i agree. the Halo universe is about as deep as any other sci-fi series out there, and it serves as one of the better backdrops for any video game i've ever played.

and as far as settings go, my list would have to include these games:

Mass Effect
Bioshock
Fallout 3
Dead Rising
Crysis
FarCry 2
Half Life 2
Assassin's Creed
TES: IV Oblivion
The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

Star Wars games in general
The Chronicles of Spellborn (possibly the most original fantasy setting I've ever seen)
Mass Effect
Guild Wars
The Lord of the Rings Online
RF Online (free MMO, humans extinct, three races evolved from them, at war with eachother)
The Elder Scrolls
Half-Life 2

Lessee here, a super-soldier wearing a highly-powered suit (Every space action movie/game ever) available exclusively to his class is woken up from cryogenic sleep when a team of Starship Trooper rip-off soldiers are attacked by a highly-aggressive, religiously-motivated aliens (Alien, Predator), forcing everyone to land on a ring-shaped artificial planet (Ringworld). Oh, and there's a naked purple AI woman.

My bad, I didn't realise we were talking about the most original game settings, but the most well-made ones.

Also, I knew those Predators were damned fundamentalists!

No, the question was whether Halo's setting was revelutionary or not, and my angle is that Halo's setting wasn't revolutionary by any measure. It's gameplay was, without a doubt, but not its story or setting.

^ I see it differently, though. The first episode was probably the most cliché of the franchise, and although the games single player campaings only got worse and worse, the storyline was, inversely, getting better.

I'm surprised no one has said this yet, The thief series.
