The slant is so the voice receiver can pick up the voice easier (...) .

Can't wait to see what 7 is like, though, when I saw it in my tech class, it looked like Vista with some things added and deleted, but all together it looked like a nice OS.

Makes sense, but it just looks awkward and I haven't seen that on a non-flip/slide phone before...

1. Aesthetics
2. Grip (especially fifth digit)
3. Aesthetics

A few mm up or down is not going to affect the receiver mic - we've been managing fine without it til now

I'd have to actually hold one before I can say its awkward or not. You can only get so much from a piccie

Here's some not-so-good news for those of us waiting for the GT300.... 40nm silicon yields at TSMC are down so much that it looks like this much awaited GPU will be released later than many would have liked.... >>source

At this rate, I'll be getting that upgrade circa Q2 2010

Also, it seems nvidia are eager to cash in on the success of the Ion platform, and are plowing on ahead to Ion2 which will feature a GT200M equivalent chipset and be DirectX 10.1 compliant.. In sale in time for Xmas apparently... >>source

Definitely disappointing news about the GT300. Looks like TSMC execs were blowing smoke up NVIDIA arses when they claimed that they had fixed the issues with the 40nm process during Computex. I'm sure GlobalFoundries are drooling with anticipation at the potential opportunity TSMC has opened up for them.

Don't know if you read another BSN article from June 18 where NVIDIA's CEO says his company is seriously evaluating GlobalFoundries.

Downloading the Win7 RC just now, I've got a 30Gb partition to play around with, I take it I can dual-boot it with XP no problem?

Yup. It has the same bootloader as Vista, so will recognise the XP install and list it as 'Earlier Version of Windows' You can use Easy BCD to tweak this as you desire (as described in dual boot thread)

Other than that, if you just want a general play around(no gaming), it'd be quicker/easier to do a virtual install using the virtualisation app of your choosing - Im using MS Virtual PC for one Virtualisation instance - with no hassles. I like how you can move the mouse around freely without locking and unlocking it.

You know how you can switch the sidebar dock on and off in vista ? The dock doesnt freakin exist in W7 In W7, the gadgets will autodock if they are on the side, but they wont be 'always on top' like the dock in vista could be. This probably isnt a huge issue for many, but those of us that always had the dock dont have this option anymore.. Im not sure why they removed it. Vista allowed you the on/off flexibility. I myself use it with the sidelauncher gadget which has about 40 icons (to reduce desktop clutter) Now, when I open anything else, it sits over the gadgets, and I cant access to all my sidelauncher icons.

A little niggle, but an annoying one There were some people who figured out a way to override this in build 7000, but I havent seen anything for RC yet.. Also, Im not sure if this has changed in subsequent builds/RTM

Im still happy to stay on Vista for my gaming rig. My tablet/htpc have windows7, and have no need of the sidebar

For those of you who have ever wanted to know what android is like... the Live Android team have been working on and android Live CD/Live USB build so you can have a play around. Easiest way to have a quick looksee would be to install it as a virtual machine in the virtualisation app your choosing

You can download the .iso here

W7 was officially RTMd in an announcement at Windows Team Blog

Of course, as mentioned previously - some oems have had their mits on Build 7600 since earlier this month, with the subsequent delay being to complete some language nuances.

I actually havent received it yet as my technet contact wont be getting it until Early August IIRC. No biggie. RC1 is working pretty well on my htpc/tablet, and free 'til March 2010

Expect to see store PCs/laptops become awash with W7 in short order

Some more news on the Zune HD for those interested, this time from gadgetry site Cnet. longstoryshort version: the guy was impressed

In other news, GPU manufacturers BFG have released versions of the 285/295 with self contained watercooling units. They are stated to 'run 30C cooler' than air coolers. I havent seen any proper reviews on this yet. Theyre likely to not be cheap either

Probably soething for the overclock crowd to drool over. In my experience, the 295s large central fan(in single pcb version) does a great job. It will be interesting to see if that '30C cooler' transfers into actual gameplay/apps performance, or power savings

while that Zune HD looks nice, its not going to be enough to pry my hands off of my 3rd gen iPod (as long as its still works, that is).

i just keep thinking to myself: if i was MacGyver, and i had to create a PS3 out of a bunch of cheap plastic and a couple of spare parts, it would probably look something like that.

Fans of Equip Vert, aka Team Green aka nvidia may be interested to know that they are embarking on yet another naming convention change.

This one is less dramatic and will see to teh dropping of GT/S/X etc prefixes - everything will be Geforce 2xx or 3xx. Im sure manufacturers will try add on letters and numbers to make their product some more awsome like the XFX GEFORCE 300 XXX EXTREME OC EDITION

*sigh* Hopefully this changeover gets handled better than the last one did. I didn't have a problem with NVIDIA's naming convention per se. My biggest complaint was that they renamed G80/G92 cards such that they appeared to be GT200 cards when they weren't, e.g. 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+ to GTS 250. So will the GeForce GTS 250 now be rebadged to GeForce 180? IMHO it doesn't make much sense to do that now that the damage is done. I just want NVIDIA to make their naming convenstion sensible going forward. Any new G92 cards named GeForce 1xx, any new GT200 cards named GeForce 2xx, and GT300 cards named GeForce 3xx.

I assure you that Nvidia's renaming schemes make perfect sense to them.

Hmm.. looks like the pcie 3.0 spec has been delayed til 2011. This effectively means that the true next gen of GPU performance is over a year away... article at Reg Hardware

This effectively means that AMD/nvidia next line of high end GPUs, such as the "Geforce 300" will effectively have at least one year to gloat about their specs before pcie 3.0 kit comes out - and potentially tear it to shreds.. as PCIe 3.0 essentially has double the effective bandwitdth (7.99Gb/s) compared to the 4.0Gbs for spec version 2.

In CPU related news, some scores on Lynfield based Core i5/i7 performance have started trickling out - looks like Intel is on another winner. Has AMD become content to be always second in CPU performance. The promise K10 had compared to what was delievered is saddenning to an AMD fanboy Check out the article at Bright Side of News

meh, i don't think bandwidth is the issue when it comes to 3D performance on most things. games tend to be GPU-bound in the first place, and giving more bandwidth between the CPU and GPU probably won't do much (although it certainly doesn't hurt anything). about the only area it will help is if you have a slower processor, but who in their right mind is going to pair an old CPU with a new mobo??

This is true for the way games are currently designed. Most games still only utilise a single core and work within an x86 environment. When devs pull their finger out and code for multicore/x64 then the pcie 3 spec will make more sense.

Yeah, I think that all of that bandwidth is intended to take full advantage of multi-core CPUs while playing multi-threaded games with multiple GPUs. I think.

IIRC, Core i7 really starts to pull ahead of Core2 Quad performance-wise while using multiple GPUs.

Yes, but only realised in niche graphical apps atm. Most gaming devs on the planet dont seem fussed with coding beyond 2006 yet

From a specs perspective, the Zune + Tegra GPU has more than enough clout to compete with the touch or the iphones multimedia capabilities. Comparing it to the iphone because it cant text and dial is simply not valid. The 'Cnet guy' has also done his best at comparing a pre release device with no apps or games etc on it compared to all the hijinks he must have on his touch/iphone. Let's hope he revisits his review in 12 months.

It's not huge surprise that MS has been working on attracting coders to work on zune apps as well.

I wouldnt be suprised if the next gen iphones also sported Tegra, as did the zune phones... or whatever they will be called

Here's one for the speculators:

The oft outspoken Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has revealed in a recent presentation that he believes GPU tech will be 570 times faster within the next 3 years. he compares this to a mere 3% performance gain to be achieved by CPUs. This latter figure is a bit more realistic and fits in with good ole 'Moore's Law'

Still, even a 57% increase in GPU performance over the next 3 years would sound more pausible than the figure JHH has quoted. Either he is sitting on some amazing tech we dont know about, or has been smokin' reefers (or has been misquoted!)

original report at TG Daily

What?!?! Do you mean to say that NVIDIA may not be able to make good on that 570x GPU performance increase promise?!?! Preposterous! Huang is on record now. That in essence entitles graphics kiddies like me. He better make good or I'm filing class action lawsuit on his butt!

lolz, we had a prime minister that made the now infamous statement (in about '86) there would be no children living in poverty here in Oz by 1990.

Maybe JHH has been taking some inspiration from him...

I personally feel there is some context missing in that quote. Im not entirely convinced it means Geforce 6-7xx series are going to crunch >teraflops out of the box and destroy crysis at 1600p without even getting hot

So I understand AMD's Evergreen launch event was yesterday. Starting to see some more info on the Radeon HD 5xxx cards. ALIENBABELtech has apparently posted specs ahead of the NDA expiration. Sounds like September 23 is the launch date.
Quote:
HD 5870 offers over 1600 Stream processors. Amazingly AMD doubled the number of SIMD units from 10 to 20. Since each SIMD unit contains 16 5-D units and a Quad-TMU overall, that means we count 1600 stream processors and 80 TMUs. We are talking about a new videocard whose core speed is at 850 MHz and whose 256-bit GDDR5 runs at 1200 MHz all for the suggested retail of $399! AMD is expecting HD 5870 to come close to the performance of a HD 4870-X2 or the GTX 295
Quote:
The new HD 5850 will launch on September 23 also. We hear it is priced below $299. HD 5850 will sport 1440 stream processors and it will have lower clockspeeds than its big brother. We are hearing somewhere around 700/1000 MHz
So much for even coming close to matching the launch prices of the 4850 and 4870, eh?

Yeah, I figured that this next generation would start out pricey. They are roughly doubling the performance over the previous generation, after all. Prices will definitely come down after both companies have launched their products and the price war begins.

Anandtech - Beginnings of the Holodeck: AMD's DX11 GPU, Eyefinity and 6 Display Outputs

So what are everybody's thoughts on AMD's Eyefinity technology, where one GPU renders a display to 3-6 monitors? From what I've read it sounds like this tech works pretty well on AMD's new GPU's.
