This is going to sound really stupid, but are you 100% certain that you replaced the original mss32.dll file with the one fixed for Vista?

The reason I'm asking is that this sounds like the same error that people get with the original file.

"They should rename the team to the Washington Government Sucks. Put Obama on the helmet. Line the entire walls of the stadium with the actual text of the ACA.
Fix their home team score on the board to the debt clock, they can win every game 17,000,000,000,000 to 24. Losing team gets taxed by the IRS 100%, then droned."

I am certain I had done this. I just did it again, figured it wouldn't hurt and the game launches now. Cue embarrassment.

Can't get KOTOR to Run on Vista 64

ok i followed all the steps on post 1 and 2...
even installing the latest drivers for my vid card

downloaded the DX9 thingy
Running the setup with compat properties(xp compat and as admin)
downloaded the mss dll fix
securerom fix
then ran the exe in compat xp and admin

and i got this error msg when i ran the game.. nothing else...

then i used the launcher in compatibility mode and as admin and got this screen when i tried to run the game

So i searched Detonator 45.23 on nvidias page.. and found some stuff...
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp-2k_45.23.html

Theres no point in running the compatibility tester as is not designed to recognise later generation hardware. Ive got a GTX 295 and it gives me the same message

Dont forget - once you download the mss32 fix , you actually need to replace the one in your KOTOR root directory.

This thread contains pretty much everything you'll ever find on this topic anywhere. If youve repeated everything corrrectly, are using the original discs - you have either missed something, or otherwse may not be able to get it to work at all... this is especially found to be the case for those who have laptops.

What graphics card do you have ??

So, I just bought Kotor for my laptop via D2D. I've gone through many of the steps listed on this thread and around other forums on the internet to get this game running. The only issue is, the best fix to get the game working for me has been to go into the game configuration and disable all sound. This is a terrible inconvenience while playing KotOR, and I was wondering if anyone knows any fixes for this issue, or if I could be directed to another thread that holds the answers I need. Below I'll list my specs and the hardware scan by KotOR. Thanks.

Edit: Let me be a little more specific about the problem. When I first installed the game, I immediately tried playing. I had no problems starting the game and creating my character, but the problem occurs immediately after that. Even after I applied all the fixes I read about, I cannot load into the game after creating my character unless sound is disabled. When sound is disabled, it seems like I can play just fine (I only tested this up until I got off the endar spire, to which point the game was playing flawlessly). Hopefully this little bit of extra information assists in finding a solution to this problem.

Make sure that you have replaced the mss32.dll on your main game folder with the one that's been fixed for Vista.

When I say make sure I mean either rename or remove the old one before putting the new one in the folder, just to be sure that the game is using the new one.

"They should rename the team to the Washington Government Sucks. Put Obama on the helmet. Line the entire walls of the stadium with the actual text of the ACA.

I've tried that a few times now. I went to the link in the first post and got the file, extracted it, and replaced the old file with it 2 or 3 different times but I still can't play the game unless sound is disabled. I'll try it again just to make sure I'm really not messing it up, but I'm curious if this is the only fix to this sound problem?

Edit: I renamed the old file that was already in the main folder, and then put in the vista fix mss32.dll into the folder. I've looked through this thread quite a bit and have tried some other fixes (i.e. the install from the first post, the dantooine lag fix). If there is anything else you know that might help I'm willing to try it.

It sounds like youve tried every trick there is

Looking at your specs through, its not going to be easy - your running an intel integrated gpu. Theyre are not really built for gaming (esp 965)

I did notice you still seem to be on WDM drivers, so may want to give the intel driver update utility a try. There is may 2009 uopdate for the 965 chipset - the utility should find it

http://www.intel.com/support/detect.htm?iid=dc_iduu

There is absolutely zero guarantee it will work for KOTOR though - but your system will be better for the upgrade

If that doesnt work, and you really want to play kotor... you may want to think about a dual boot setup.

Either that or just wait for TOR

So, it seems like *some* progress has been made, but it's really not anything significant. I tried playing with the force software sound option turned on instead of the disable sound, and it actually let me load into my save file that instead of crashing at the loading screen, but it only took 4-5 seconds for the game to crash once I was in. Do you think I might have some corrupted sound files within the game, which is why it only plays with sound disabled, or is it maybe something with my sound card? the scan hardware that I linked a few posts up said my sound card is fine.

then what has changed to now make it not work ?? Also, did you try the proper intel drivers

I have K1/2 working fine in vista and W7 x64 so I know its possible. Unfortunately there are many hardware differences in all our pcs to make troubleshooting easy

Are you using the swkotor(2).exe that's been fixed for Vista? I have an A205 (GL960 chipset, X3100 GPU and probably very similar to yours) and I found that you absolutely have to use that (with the game disc) with that chipset. Anything else (cough, cough) will crash the game.

You'll also want to open your Intel graphics driver control panel, click on "3D Options", look for "Flipping Policy" and set it to "Blit".

And yes, I got it running successfully on it.

If your High Definition Audio is by Realtek, you could go to their site and look for the "Soundback Beta" in their downloads section. It's supposed to make HDA more compatible with legacy games.

Although this seems to be a sound-related problem, you have an ATI 4xxx GPU, which are notoriously bad for KotOR. I think DarthParametric, who uses a 4850, has had to resort to using a savegame from right after character creation and then using KSE to modify the PC to his liking. You should probably try something like that.

These games have always had trouble with ATI GPUs, which was one of the reasons why I stuck with Nvidia when I built my new rig.

Good to hear its working. Seeing you had no luck with intels utility >> heres the direct download link to the latest Mobile 965 drivers for Vista 64(May 2009)

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Deta...=2800&lang=eng

Having the latest drvers is always helpful - you will then get the intel control panel in your tray to which Q was referring. You dont get that when you have WDM(windows device manager default drivers) on.

I only could reproduce this if I tried to run a no cd patch, or in Vista - had not applied XP compat mode.

not mss.dll i didnt need that this last attempt...

all i did was install, then replace/copy the .exe
i think it was this from post 2 the secure rom fix

Quote:
EDIT: We forgot about the SecuROM Vista fixes! Of course, I know why we did.

For KotOR (there was a link to a kotor.exe here...)

For KotOR2
on my second attempt.. all i had to do was install the 4 discs, then copy/replace the .exe and presto.. up until the crash..

i didnt set affinity however... so i'll try that next

You have to do everything that we mention in Posts 1&2 in order to get it to work without crashing, and when I say everything, I mean everything.

Did I mention that you have to do everything in Posts 1&2 to get it to work without crashing?

Unless you are running windows 7, you are seriously wasting your time if youre trying to run that game in a stable prolonged fashion in Vista without that fix! When you get your crashes, check the error messages - There's a good chance it will tell you that mss32.dll is where the grief is

The menu and character creation work fine, but once I start playing and either watch or skip the opening movie, the game crashes. I also get the same crash when loading up a save I downloaded.

I am running 7 RC1 x64 and have an Intel 4500MHD. My KotOR II is patched manually to 1.0b, and I installed and ran the patch with XP SP2 and admin compatibility mode. I've also replaced Mss32.dll and added the line in swkotor.ini concerning Intel cards. I don't think this is the same problem since KotOR II starts fine (and the crash points to swkotor.exe instead of Mss32.dll), I just can't play anything. Any ideas?

Yeah. It's your Intel GPU.
Go into your Intel graphics control panel and click on "3D Options". Look for "Flipping Policy" and change it to "Blit".

Is the line that you added to the swkotor2.ini "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1" under "Graphics Options"? If so, that's pretty much for all GPUs nowadays, or at least the DX10 ones.

Are you using the swkotor2.exe that was updated by SecuROM?

Hi everyone,

I'm using the Steam version of Kotor and I know it hasn't been mentioned in this thread but I'm hoping someone here can help me with the problem I'm having.

At first the game would crash as soon as I tried to open it but after reading post #31 in this thread I've managed to get the game to run in a window at 1024x768 by changing the following in [Graphics Options] in swkotor.ini:

Anti Aliasing=1
FullScreen=0

I'd love to get the game to run fullscreen or at least be able to run it in a bigger window. If run the game and go to Options->Graphics->Screen Resolution there is nothing in there so I can't change the res in there. I've also tried changing the res in the config file but no matter what I make it there is no difference.

Here is what I've tried so far:
Running the game with & without the mss32.dll mentioned in post #1 as well has running it in Windows XP SP2 compatibility mode.
Installed the latest DirectX Redistributable Package and added Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1 to my swkotor.ini.
As for CPU affinity, if I have the config set to fullscreen=1 the game crashes before I even have time to set it to one core and if the config is set to fullscreen=0 then I can change the affinity but it doesn't help with the res problem.

My specs are:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T8300 @ 2.40GHz
4GB Memory
GeForce 8600M GT
Windows 7 Ultimate (Build 7600) (32 bit version)

Below is the output from running swconfig.exe (I've left out the [Keymapping] piece if you need it let me know and I'll post it too):

You know, I've never had to do any of that crap in post #31 and KotOR 2 runs just fine on my Vista 64 rig.

Is the resolution that you're trying to run the game at supported by your graphics driver? If not, you will need to set up a custom resolution or the game won't run.

If that is not the case then I'd say that the game did not install properly.

Well my desktop resolution is currently 1920 x 1200 so I'd imagine that my driver should be able to support that for the game. I doubt the game can support that resolution though.

How would I setup a custom resolution? I've tried setting Height & Width in the swkotor.ini but there is no change to the game.

I also originally thought that the game didn't install properly so I deleted everything and then redownloaded it from Steam and reinstalled it. Still have the same problems.

You can see whether or not the resolution that you're trying to use is among those supported by opening your Nvidia control panel and looking under "Set Resolution". You can then set up a custom resolution if you need to.

I see that my Refresh Rate is currently 59hz. Could that not be a problem if the game is trying to run at 60Hz? How can I force the game to run at 59Hz?

The resolutions that my drivers support are:
800x600
1024x768
1280x720
1280x800
1280x1024
1440x900
1600x1200
1680x1050
1920x1080
1920x1200

I've tried setting the Height & Width in the swkotor.ini to 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050, & 1920x1200 and there is still no change in the window size.

Your does indeed support the resolutions that the game runs at, so that's not the problem. The game doesn't support any of those widescreen resolutions that you've tried, though. It might support 1600x1200 through the .ini hack, but usually the highest it supports with the patch is 1280x1024 or 1280x960, so I'd give those three a try. You can also play around with the Nvidia control panel's flat panel scaling settings.

Otherwise I haven't a clue why it won't run fullscreen.

Hi guys, I've run through all the steps provided in the first few posts:

Running ms....dll, xp compatability/administrator mode, updates,

I'm having that strange crash after the movie following the character selection screen with a no-cd and the program won't run using poweriso and the securom fix "No disc inserted." My new laptop doesn't have a dvd drive so I'm running an iso (I own a copy of KOTOR 2).

Here's my specs:
Lenovo x200 64 bit Windows 7
2.4 Ghz dual core w/ integrated GPU intel chipset.

If i have to, this week I'll get an external dvd drive but If i can get this to work with an ISO I would be very pleased. All my other backed up programs from my other laptop work fine with poweriso and it'd only be for KOTOR 2 that I get this drive.

Man, I feel ya, really, but in my experience you'll have to use the original game disk and the swkotor(2).exe updated by SecuROM in order to run it in Vista on an Intel mobile chipset with an Intel GPU, and I don't know why.

Your laptop doesn't have an optical drive?!

Man that's disappointing. I've got a Lenovo x200 that gets something around 8 hours of battery life and they removed the optical drive to save space for the battery or something like that. It's nice for trips but installing windows from a flash drive is always fun. Thanks for the tip btw.
