Mozilla Firefox: 2003 - 2010 RIP

No, nothing has happened to Mozilla Firefox.

However, after a long healthy relationship, and the last two years being nothing but non stop errors, and head aches. I had no choice but to permantly nix it from my computer. For the last week, it simply would not even open up at all. This puts me back with IE until I can find something better.

Any suggestions are welcome.

God do I miss my bookmarks...

Try Opera or Chrome.

I've always had problems with anything Flash related skipping on Firefox. It annoys the heck out of me.

Yeah, Firefox plays up alot, I've had problems with it stalling and crashing for a good few months now. Was thinking of changing browser myself.

I used to love Firefox, but with every release it would get more bloated and honestly it is just unusable for me on a laptop. I've been using Chrome for over a year and I could never go back.

I second the vote for Opera or Chrome. Both are really excellent browsers.

I was having problems with it recently myself, so i backed up my extensions and bookmarks and killed the whole installation and my profile to get rid of any config goof ups. Then I re-installed and set some stuff back up and it's been working fine ever since. I figured some odd error must have wandered in due to the continued updating.

^That would be my guess as well. A lot of these Firefox installations that are experiencing problems are actually years old. All of the updating can lead to instability, especially with XP, so it would be best to do a fresh install instead of using the updater.

Another vote for Chrome here.

I actually had Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Safari installed for quite some time. Firefox was my main browser purely because of its extensions (such as Adblock Plus), but after time it was dreadfully clear how many more issues it had than the other browsers (such as with the flash player).

I really like Opera, but my current browser is Chrome ever since it received its own version of Adblock. And it's so fast!

I'll consider trying Chrome as soon as it gets an add-on like NoScript.

Just do a complete uninstall/reinstall, and it'll run perfectly; I did so when 3.6 was released, and all's been well. Having 10+ add-ons also doesn't help. No need to abandon ship when all there is to do is replace the sails.

@OP, thanks for the warning.

I used google chrome previously, but it may not get along very well with emachines (I'm using right now) as it tends to slow things down a bit. Or HP for that matter, not that most people besides my parents and a psychotic family friend use those.

Wanted to try Opera for some time now so I'll put my name into that hat as well.

EDIT: Say Groovy, can't you import your bookmarks to IE for the time being?

EDIT EDIT: Thanks below SWPhreak.

You can export bookmarks as a html file, and (I think) import them somewhere else.

I have been using Chrome on my netbook since I bought it ~6 months ago, and have started using it more on my desktop as well (worked around not having adblock by using special hosts files). I like the minimalist interface, although one thing I absolutely hate about it is how it sometimes sticks on top of the Start menu even when the menu is set to autohide (this is actually a documented bug that's been around for quite some time). Other than that, it works great and is very fast (particularly on javascript-heavy sites like /.).

Thanks for all the kind suggestions gang. You guys never steered me wrong when it came to MP3 players, so I took all your advice and installed Chrome. So far it's pretty fast and easy to use. It's gonna do nicely! Thanks again!

*huggles my firefox*

But if I were to switch it would be to Google Chrome. I played with it when it was the new 'it' browser and really liked it by firefox hasn't given me good reason to dump it.

Chrome's Adblock Plus has an issue with the deviantART notification system. It's a real hassle and aaaalmost making me want to switch back.

But I think being able to have 20 tabs open without any slowdown is worth it. And I can always just turn adblock on and off when I'm on dA.

Add an exception for dA. I don't know about Chrome, but how I would do it in Firefox: Go to Preferences, click on the options menu, check "Show in Status Bar". When that's there, visit dA, right click on the ABP icon and right click and add an exception for the website...

Ah, thanks. I saw that in the options menu and I tried to configure it to dA, but it wasn't working. I just did a bit more digging and found that I had to specify "my.deviantart.com/messages/" for it to work. Yay!

It was kind of silly to block dA anyways because as a Premium Member I don't get any ads in the first place >.>

Firefox was taking forever to load for me lately, so I decided to finally give Google Chrome a go and I'm so glad I made the switch. It's so much faster than Firefox. It's easy to import all your bookmarks too.

I can't see it when people saying "Chrome is faster than Firefox" they both load up at the same speed for me and the pages all load exactly the same way... I can't tell the difference.

It's fine once it's open, the problem is the amount of time it takes to open in the first place. Chrome takes like 2 seconds, whereas Firefox was taking a good minute with me and I finally had enough. Maybe it's just me though...

@ leXX: Like I said, Firefox and Opera both open at the same speed for me, so it is strange to hear that it take A MINUTE to open. I mean, not even Photoshop on my really crappy ye old machine from years back took that long to open.

Actually, Firefox has been playing nice for me lately. Through October the stuff never stopped ****ting the bed. But so far this month it's been pretty smooth. I use Chrome as my secondary browser, especially on my netbook where it starts up much quicker than Firefox.
