Game phishing scams

I was checking my spam filter today and found phishing scams for both Wow and NCSoft, which makes both Guild Wars and Aion, among other games. The phishers got my email from either incgamers.com or Beckett's Massively Online sites. The emails tell me my account was shut down for 72 hours, or tell me there was suspicious activity on the account. Since I don't even play these games, and I don't use the same email for my games as I do for gaming sites, I knew right away it was fake. I just wanted to make you aware of this phishing attempt. NEVER click links in an email that says it's from a gaming company. Instead, go directly to the company's site to log into your account to check if the info is for real.

You have a LOTRO account right Jae?

There was a fiasco with DDO last week that had some security issues... Turbine had an Offer Wall that you could do things for free Turbine Points in DDO, now while I know you aren't on DDO however the customer databases might not be separate as it is all Turbine. People going there got infected with spyware/malware by the hundreds, it was also found to be transmitting account names and email addresses, cause ing further security concerns.

They have since shut down the offer wall. But we don't know what types of data was gotten so all Turbine customers might get Phishing emails. I got one for my WOW account... I don't have one.

So yeah everyone beware of emails even from a trusted source.

I got a mail offering new stuff for my Lineage account, which I of course don't have. Thanks for the warning.

Hmm, let's see...

I get cash offers all the time, career schools nobody's ever heard of wanting my "attendance" with "pre-endorsements", medical companies for just whatever, pharmaceuticals and drugs offers with discounts, and anything that could be associated with your name (I.E. computerjack, navy_tim, jetsjanet, etc.) in some ridiculous spam offer.

Clark Howard and Kim Komando talk about this kind of stuff all the time and how to spot it if you're clueless, though most have trained their eye on how to spot it and excise it from their inbox.

Sometimes given my interest in lasers and how I have been to photon lexicon, I get offers for "warehouse laser goods" which could range from anything that has the word to god only knows what. All irrelevant trash.

I know that it is a phishing scam when I get an email from a beautiful woman wanting to "fulfill" my desires because beautiful women never email me.

Helpful!
A couple days ago some people off my friends list on Steam thought it would be funny to send me links saying that Steam would give me games like MW2, Crysis, the HL franchise, and the L4D franchise for free as long as I signed in. I knew it was a fake considering

1) The final extension in the link was .ru, and those damned russians never have anything good to send me :P

2) I'm always signed in, only signed out when Steam ****s something up. So that was an indicator

3) Giving away games for free doesn't equal more money, so it defeats the purpose of an online game buyer thing.

Lucky. All I get is spam for Viagra and penis enlargements. I think they're trying to tell me something

RedHawke, is it just Turbine members who visited the wall, or is it affecting the visitor's contact list as well? I haven't been hit yet, but being a member of Turbine/DDO it wouldn't surprise me if I see something soon. Gmail has a surprisingly decent spam filter (with my added filters) so I may have just dodged a bullet.

RedHawke--thanks for the heads up on that. I use a different email for LOTRO than the one that got the spam, which is how I knew the likely sources. I've been playing a lot of STO lately as well, so I haven't played a lot of LOTRO recently. I'll keep an eye out for suspicious activity there as well.

So far just the ones who visited the wall... or the main page for it. But since the scam company was in cahoots with Turbines systems it wouldn't surprise me if Turbine itself has unwittingly given some of all of their customers info out to them due to the malware packed episodes visitors to the wall received.

Yeah I've gotten those spams as well. They began shortly after signing up for ebay.

Fair warning to anyone here.
