Game isn't working in Windows XP

The installation was fine, but whenever I start up the game, I get a black screen with a blue mouse and when I check in Windows Task Manager it lists SWKOTOR as "Not Responding". I have the latest DirectX and drivers for my video card downloaded, and I meet all of the recommended system requirements. I downloaded the game off of Direct2Drive. If I let it keep going, I eventually get the error report message from Microsoft, and I click Send Report or Debug, and neither has done anything. Just to check, I ran other games I have downloaded from D2D and they all worked fine, except KOTOR. I've reinstalled the game several times. I run Windows XP Media Center Edition. My graphics card is aATI Radeon Xpress 200M (crappy, I know, but it meets the requirements and has the latest drivers installed).

Does anybody know any possible solutions?

Please use the game's configuration utility to list your system specs and we'll go from there:

Sometimes we're just not going to be able to help you if we don't know what kind of hardware you have on your machine. If you don't know what you have on your machine, then follow these steps below:
  • Bring up the launcher menu for Kotor 1 or 2.
  • Click on "Configure".
  • Click the "Scan Hardware" button on the lower center of the window.
  • Click "Yes" to continue.
  • Click "Details" to view your system specs.
  • Click "Save Report" and save the file to your desktop.
  • Whenever you post your problem, open the file you just saved and copy and paste the contents to your post.

Fix their home team score on the board to the debt clock, they can win every game 17,000,000,000,000 to 24. Losing team gets taxed by the IRS 100%, then droned."

Thanks.

While that Radeon Xpress 200M can play the game, it will probably have to be a minimal settings. That said, these games have traditionally been very bitchy with ATI hardware/drivers, but there are a few things that you can try. First off, there is the Dantooine lag fix, which is now necessary for every install of the game, regardless of hardware:

  • When you find it, just double-click on the file to open it in Notepad.
  • Scroll down the file until you find the Graphics Options
  • Under the last line ("last line" as in the last line of the list of entries under "Graphics Options", NOT the last line of "swkotor(2).ini), add "Disable Vertex Buffer Objects=1", without the quotes.
  • Goto File, then Save.
Second, here's a couple of ATI-specific suggestions:

It's rather simple, really. The game had trouble locating the OpenGL driver and I got a atioglxx.dll exception.

I found the workaround at guru3d and the AMD forums: Put the atioglxx.dll from Catalyst 9.12 in the game folder. So far it works in windowed mode only, but I am glad it works at all.

Maybe you can work this into one of the guides.

Thanks,
Christian

ATI Tray Tools isn't working, and neither is the first fix. The second one is for Windows 7, which I do not have.

No, but it's a way to get the game to work with modern drivers that you might want to try, regardless of the OS that you're using.
