RIP Whitney Houston

It is being reported that signer/actress Whitney Houston has passed away at age 48.

I know it really isn't a surprise with her battle with substance abuse, but I'm still shocked. Not a real fan, but I did think she has a beautiful voice. I only had own her debut album, even only liked one song on it, but it was one of my guilty pleasure that I wrote about in a recent poll.

Not really surprised given her history. Still, 48 is pretty young for checking out in this day and age.

I have a friend who thinks Whitney is like the best singer he's ever heard and he's totally going nuts over this.

This is insane. WTF.

Awesome voice. Always thought she had a chip on her shoulder, though. Anyway, RIP.

I had the displeasure of waiting on Bobby Brown and Whitney on Bobby's birthday... I guess it was about 2003/4, and it was a jazz club I was working at, waiting tables.

Bobby was trashed. So was Whitney. Although they were still married, the thing that stands out was that Whitney wanted nothing to do with BB... on his birthday! She brushed him off several times; mostly I think this was due to his insistence on joining the band to sing (poorly) several times - he was probably trying to drag her out there with him. Despite her inebriation, I was proud of Whitney for staying away from that idiot, just for a moment....

RIP pretty lady, you sure could sing.

Never understood why she married that talentless poser.

EDIT: Apparently, she drowned in the bathtub. She must've been really hammered.

It is getting really tough not to be cynical about society.

Apple Accused Of Exploiting Whitney’s Death By Increasing iTunes Costs

Not sure if it was Apple or Sony and I don't really care.

hmmm... iTunes did the same thing in England and there was the same outrage.

Also last I checked, if it was Sony instead of Apple that cause the rate hike, Sony's main headquarters is still in Japan.

Looks like the rate hike hasn't hurt sales.

On the American iTunes #1 Single is I will Always Love you, #2 Video I Wanna Dance with Somebody, #5 video Greatest Love of All and #2 Album is Whitney - The Greatest Hits

She was definitely one of the best female voices in a long time. It is a shame that her dirtbag hubby beat her then got into the alcohol and drugs. RIP Whitney

So according to your logic, all Americans are the same. And Americans are the only people in the world that are interested in profits.

Your stereotypical attitude needs a serious adjustment and so does your ignorance.

No, I don't refer to the American people as a whole. In fact, many Americans are nice. But, there are a LOT of idiotic Americans out there.

EDIT: Let me clarify myself. I love America, and I love the people in it. I am, however, sick of the government, and Corporate America. Even the phrase, "Corporate America", gives the hint of a corporatocracy or corporate capitalism.

It's not how it came off. You singled out Americans in your original post. I'd suggest you learn to word your responses differently.

I'm a bit ignorant about all this 99% stuff and so on, so can some on explain to me, preferably over PM, what the whole deal is with Corporate America being bad? As someone who has lived through the transition from SU-inspired socialism to gleeful capitalism, I'd really like to know what the big problem is with "corporate capitalism".

LDR has took my American-hating role :@ (Nah, i'm jus' playin' )

A couple lit a candle in remembrance of Whitney, and went to bed, forgetting the candle was lit. The candle burnt their house down.

Oh bitter irony.

But still, R.I.P Whitney

Sparkle (2012)

Synopsis: "Three sisters form a successful singing group and must deal with the fallout of fame and drugs."

Err...awkward.

My memory of Whitney will always be the crappy summer job that I had the year that The Bodyguard came out. The owner insisted on having the radio tuned to top 40 during business hours and this station played that goddamn song 17 times per hour. One day I snapped and called the station and begged the dj to make it stop. That's the day I learned that radio djs don't get to choose what they play.

It would only be ironic if Mss. Houston had died in a house fire. She didn't. So it's not ironic, just unfortunate.

irony
  • A condition in which one seems to be mocked by fate or the facts

Sounds okay to me. The 'exact opposite outcome' meaning is just one of the many meanings of the diverse gentleman that is irony.

This was my sophomore year in high school. I gave up commercial radio in college and agree with you wholly (except I would argue that "awful" is too generous).

Yea I stopped listening to the top 40 in 1993, when Rock was ousted by Grunge, there's only so many Unwashed depressed tramps with minimal musicality you can listen to before you become one yourself.

But anyway, RIP Whitney, talented singer who made bad life choices.

She's a great--and tragic--example for my kids of how drug and alcohol addiction can ravage a successful career and destroy a life long before it should have ended. I feel bad for her daughter most of all.

From MST3K's spoof of "Hercules Unchained"--heard as Roman medic soldiers carry off an unconscious Greek Hercules on a 1950's Army green canvas stretcher: "Hi, we're IX-I-I. Did somebody dial IX-I-I?"
