In a Marketing perspective it is not a contradictive move....ALOT of people avoid ToR simply because it is a MMORPG and many prefer the single-player style. Comparing the 2 is like comparing Clone War adventures to ToR. The general customer group are completely different targets unless i missed something and 1313 is a Multiplayer MMO.

That's true. But creating a single player RPG would remove a lot of people from TOR.

A game doesn't need to be the same genre to get a certain audience from another game.

True that it doesn't HAVE to be the same genre but i would say the genre is over 70% of the draw. You very seldom see CoD players as the same people that stayed on WoW for 5 years and as an RPG player i hardly ever play FPS games...i think the last FPS game i played was the original Halo.
Edit: Also ToR is pretty low pop wise for an MMO anyways especially when F2P MOBA's are beating it in the active account department. Also i would guess Perfect world and Forsaken world are also crushing it on population and WoW...well lets not even compare it to WoW population wise lol.

They haven't really said or shown anything new at all aside from reiterating what was shown and talked about during E3.
And naturally as happens with games like this, everyone is jumping to conclusions on what the game is about (me included) when what we should be doing is waiting for more ACTUAL information to be released, something that can give us a clearer indication of where this game is headed and not just a vague talk about style.

Did they say that the guy in the vids was just a placeholder? So does that mean we might get to play as someone more well-known?

They did, in an interview. While that does not guarantee we'll be seeing someone more well-known, we most likely will not be seeing the two bozos in this trailer. Personally, I'd prefer they'd come up with an interesting original character, like a Kyle Katarn for the new generation.

I was thinking a "Dash Rendar" myself but anything new and original (emphasis on original) would be nice.

I wouldn't mind Dash Rendar though... he really is one of the more mysterious characters in the EU.

You're welcome. Those concept artworks give me hope for some more open areas, instead of corridor maps.

I doubt it, you'll probably be in areas that are large but not in an open world environment.

Probably not many Jedi or Sith to be found in the Coruscant slums.

It's set between Episode III and IV from the looks of the Lambda class shuttle and TIE Fighters in the art shown so far.

I don't think Kyle would be 'gritty' (ie. edgy teen) enough for a modern game franchise.
I'm liking the look of that gameplay. I quite like 3PS's.

You don't want too much grit though, this is still Star Wars, not new Battlestar Galactica.

I like the idea of it being between III & IV, lots of potential there and ever IF there are sensitives/jedi in the game, they will probably be a small/moot point in the bigger picture (like bounty hunter).

I predict a grizzled old dude in a cantina with an eye patch, later turns out he was a Jedi general in the clone wars, and becomes your mentor. Its in every single thing made within the 19 year Rise of the empire era, Prove me wrong LA

I was mostly being sarcastic. Grit is fine, but from what I understand, the way the industry is going with it now is just silly.

How can you not have grit? You can't make a AAA game unless it's super grimdark. It's the law.

Mass Effect and Skyrim weren't grimdark, and they were AAA titles.
Anyhow, I'm looking forward to seeing what Star Wars 1313 is bringing to the table. I think this will be LucasArt's comeback to "quality" video gaming after a very long "hit and miss" trial with the Clone Wars series. And I'm really looking forward to it. I just hope it doesn't end up like The Force Unleashed, in which anticipation and hopes were high before release, but ultimately came down as being disappointing after.
I still don't understand why it's called "1313" though. Couldn't LucasArts have come up with something more unique than three random numbers? Unless it's being planned to change.

^^^ 1313 is the setting of the game: Level 1313 of Coruscant, which is 1313 stories from the surface of the planet. I think it fits. It makes you wonder what it's about, where as The Force Unleashed automatically tells you that you'll be kicking ass with the Force.

So, just to get clear, is SW1313 going to be a game kind of purely for ultra high end pcs?

So far the demo looks like Uncharted 2 and 3 with super high-res textures and anti-aliasing... everything else seems pretty achievable with current tech despite people being wowed by it.

Going by the fact that LA hasn't readily announced the game is coming out for PS3/X360, it seems pretty certain that the game is intended for next-gen consoles. You know, the ones everyone knows are going to be announced next year, but everyone is supposed to pretend they don't exist.

Yeah, cause a PC game with gameplay based that found in console games just doesn't fit with a console. It most likely won't look as crisp, have no anti-alisaing, lower res textures and be a 720p game upscaled to 1080p... but aside from that there's not really all that much to this game that's been revealed so far that current generation consoles can't achieve, especially in the later stage of the 360/PS3's lifespan where developers have actually figured out all the tricks to make games look way better than you'd think they'd normally look on them.
Though, saying that, I think Sabre has pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Also, sticking Generic White Male and Insane Buddy in publicity trailers seems like an odd move considering the specification of them being placeholder characters..

Woah indeed! I didn't think level 1313 would be like Coruscant with no sky! Reminds me of Nar Shadda.
I wish we were playing as a alien instead of a human though...humans aren't the only species in the Star wars universe ya know Lucasarts...

Wonder if that was some kind of team miscommunication and these actually are the characters they're going ahead with. I wouldn't be surprised if one hand of LA doesn't know what the other hand is doing. >_>

I assume it'll be like mass effect with the "Cover Shepard" being in the trailer... when you get in-game you can be as Black or white as ya like.

@ adamq: Brilliant, I actually hadn't thought along those lines at all... if they make the main character of 1313 a generic template you simply use to create your own character just like in Mass Effect and other RPGs... it would be pretty sweet.
I hope someone at LucasArts has been thinking along those lines too.

Hmmm, I dunno.. IME appearance customization in non RPG's don't go much further than apparel/skins, and I don't see any RPG elements in those gameplay trailers.
