Man of Steel

Quote:
From Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures comes "Man of Steel", starring Henry Cavill ("Immortals", TV's "The Tudors") in the role of Clark Kent/Superman, under the direction of Zack Snyder ("300", "Watchmen").

A young boy learns that he has extraordinary powers and is not of this Earth. As a young man, he journeys to discover where he came from and what he was sent here to do. But the hero in him must emerge if he is to save the world from annihilation and become the symbol of hope for all mankind.

The film also stars four-time Oscar® nominee Amy Adams ("The Master") as Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Oscar® nominee Laurence Fishburne ("What's Love Got to Do with It") as her editor-in-chief, Perry White. Starring as Clark Kent's adoptive parents, Martha and Jonathan Kent, are Oscar® nominee Diane Lane ("Unfaithful") and Academy Award® winner Kevin Costner ("Dances with Wolves").

Squaring off against the superhero are two other surviving Kryptonians, the villainous General Zod, played by Oscar® nominee Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road"), and Faora, Zod's evil partner, played by Antje Traue (upcoming "The Seventh Son"). Also from Superman's native Krypton are Lara Lor-Van, Superman's mother, played by Ayelet Zurer ("Angels and Demons"), and Superman's father, Jor-El, portrayed by Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe ("Gladiator").

Rounding out the cast are Christopher Meloni ("42") as U.S. military man Colonel Hardy, Harry Lennix ("State of Play") as General Swanwick, Michael Kelly ("The Adjustment Bureau") as Steve Lombard, and Richard Schiff (TV's "The West Wing") as Dr. Emil Hamilton.

"Man of Steel" is being produced by Charles Roven, Christopher Nolan, Emma Thomas and Deborah Snyder. The screenplay was written by David S. Goyer from a story by Goyer & Nolan, based upon Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster and published by DC Entertainment. Thomas Tull, Lloyd Phillips and Jon Peters are serving as executive producers.

Zack Snyder's behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Amir Mokri ("Transformers: Dark of the Moon"); production designer Alex McDowell ("Watchmen"); editor David Brenner ("Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides"); and multiple Academy Award®-winning costume designer James Acheson ("Restoration", the "Spider-Man" films) and costume designer Michael Wilkinson ("The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 and 2", "Watchmen", "300"). The music is by Academy Award®-winning composer Hans Zimmer ("The Lion King", "Inception").

Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Legendary Pictures, a Syncopy Production, a Zack Snyder Film, "Man of Steel". The film will be released in 3D and 2D in select theaters and IMAX®, and is slated for release beginning June 14, 2013. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company

I'm surprised for not finding a thread about this already. Definitely my most anticipated movie this year.

Yeah this movie is really up on my list of anticipated movies. However, I think people are a little skeptical thanks to Superman Returns, which was God awful.

I think it has the potential to be the best movie of the year, other than Star Trek: Into Darkness. From what I've seen from the trailers, it resembles a lot of Batman Begins.

Looking forward to it as well. Always liked Superman, even if he gets a lot of slack by being boring to some people.

I almost regretted to watch trailer #3 because it was so good. That's why I haven't seen any of the TV spots that came out afterwards in order to save most of the excitement for when I see the movie.

Quite excited. For those who have indulged in the spoilers, I have a question: I'm not too well versed in Superman lore... will that affect my appreciation of this movie?

I saw a pre-showing yesterday at 7:00. I feel is was pretty good, I think it may be a grower on me though, I will have to give it a few more watches to get the full understanding of it.

Just got back from a showing. I nerded everywhere. It was fantastic.

The special effects, the soundtrack, the minor sound effects that nobody really pays that much attention to... It was like some sort of melodious, sensory buffet to an aspiring vfx artist like myself.

One of the best things about the experience, however, was the old guy sitting to my left. Dude was as giddy as a small child throughout the showing. Made watching the movie so much better.

My only complaints would have to be:

Epic film. Now, one of only three that can actually make me emotional.

Watched it last night. By far my favorite version of Superman, and I dare say one of my favorite films of all time. Yes there is a massive amount of explosions but it was the little details, the things that didn't need to be said, and the first 30 minutes of back-story-fleshing-out on Krypton that make this a far better version of the Superman story than any film or recent comic.

spoiler:
Zod's reasoning, ie; it was genetically encoded in his DNA that he protected his people to his last breath, made his struggle, his actions and his eventual death much more sad and at the same time epic. The same can be said for Kal-El. I found it refreshing that we meet Superman when he hasn't even figured out his own power's yet... He's not been saving screaming girls and kids for 20 years and come to terms with the collateral damage his powers can create, and the decisions he must face, he's taking it one burning building at a time.

Indeed. That and the flashback scenes are the best parts of the movie. And it made me realize the amount of Kevin Costner on celluloid nowadays is too damn low.

Faora-Ul was the big standout as far as badassness goes.

P.S: And how could I forget Hans Zimmer' score. Humble and epic at the same time.

I've seen this movie twice now, and it has erased every agonizing second of Superman Returns from my mind. I hate how overused the word "epic" has become, but it's definitely the right word to use here. Cavill was perfect, and the score has been stuck in my head for the last two weeks.

I agree with this, but considering how bad the other Superman movie were, that isn't saying much in my opinion.

I thought the movie was great, up until the moment it started focusing on General Zod aspect of the story. If they would have focused more on his youth, dealing with his power and secret, then the movie really would have be epic. All the acting was wonderfully done, but I felt both Diane Lane and Kevin Costner were the only characters that invoked an emotional response, not the other actors fault, mainly the scripts and the subject matter. After all not much of a Superman if he dies before any sequels and they milk the reboot for everything it is worth. All in all, decent popcorn movie, brain is not required.

Not on par with the first iron man or the batman reboot, but not the Hult either.

Saw it last night. It was a decent movie, but that's it. Visually, it was very spectacular, the acting was solid, the story was OK, but nothing special - pretty standard for a superhero movie. And yeah, I expected to hear at least one "Kneel before Zod", but no such luck.

I watched it a couple weekends ago. I didn't like it. I'm not much for movies, personally anyway, but this one had me so flipping confused. Hopping back and forth in time. xD I thought it had potential... and after seeing it, I still think it has potential, but instead of "flash backs" they should have just put the events in order of what happened, imo.

Saw Man of Steel the other day. Great action scenes, though somewhat lore-defying. This video pretty much sums it up:

View page
YouTube Video

Secondly, I felt the movie had somewhat little in the way of character development, except for Clark and Zod. But maybe i'm just saying this coming off Smallville, which is basically a soap opera. I suppose there's only so much screentime budget for such things in an action film.
(Speaking of Smallville, I found Henry Cavill's likeness to Tom Welling's in the tornado flashback scene to be uncanny!)

Thirdly, this movie's plot seemed so grandiose in scale, that i'm not sure what else can be done after this, given the bigger and better principle, and the fact that the sequels are likely to be Zack Snyder films. The next logical conclusion is Lex Luthor, but I seriously wonder what could provide more exciting action scenes than Superman fighting against a team of warrior Kryptonians?

The Zod plot seems to me something that would have been fitting as a 'final trilogy installment', rather than a first dose.

The action scenes were awesome, however. Absolutely glorious.

All in all, an enjoyable film; I quite like it.

What did you expect him to do in that situation? He had to "deal with him", just like he did in the comics (which makes it somewhat lore-faithful).

Snyder said they are not adapting The Dark Knight Returns, and the press release says there will be a new Batman. It couldn't be Bale, since Nolan's trilogy was always standalone from the beginning.

I'm more concerned about WB's long-term plan for the DC universe. They're certainly less coherent than Marvel's extremely well-planned series of films. I mean, one film is going to be Superman's origin story and the next one

What's going on in their minds, makes me wonder.

But again, that quote was used as a clue to what character they were referring to, not for the story of the film.

I wasn't at all a fan of Man of Steel. The cast was fine, more than fine even, but I feel that both Snyder's directing and Goyer's script were too bad for good acting to salvage. I'm not exactly thrilled at the prospect of those two building the DC Cinematic Universe.
