It doesn't seem like there will be any more patches, since LucasArts won't let Raven release any more....not officaly anyway.

...and there were quite a few changes in 1.03a, Datheus.

And which official source told you that?

If you were to DL the source code (SDK) and compile it...Voila!...1.03a.

It appears that the source code released by Raven contained some changes from 1.03 indicating they had started work on the next patch. The version of the released source is 1.03a.

They fixed things like the flying light-lunge (can't do it), no rotation during backstab and a few other things.

This is what ppl are referring to when they speak of 1.03a. It is NOT an official patch.

Why in the world would Lucasarts not let Raven make more patches??!
Don't they want their Star Wars games to be properly supported
after release? Raven is doing a good job, let them patch the game
and fix things that need fixed!

These completely unbalanced backstab and backspin moves *must* be fixed.
These moves have turned saber duels into jokes. They result in cheap
and totally unrealistic duels where people deliberately turn their
backs on other players and run at them just so they can get
cheap easy kills.

Turning your back in a duel should get you killed, not give you easy kills
against skillful opponents you can't beat in any kind of fair fight.

Raven, *please* ask Lucasarts to at least let you release one
more official patch that fixes the backstab and spin moves. They
are way too easy to do and way too powerful. And it's taking a
lot of the fun and believablity of the duels out of the game.

One part of the solution to these "backwards" moves
would be to make saber on hits on players' backs more deadly.
If you get hit cleanly on the back you take massive damage (as
would really happen in a duel), that would greatly discourage
turning your back on an opponent, because it would get you killed
very quickly.

if you really want the official 1.03a patch... install linux on your system and download the linux patch... THAT is 1.03a and the most recent compiled source code(which is why it was released that way)... so if you want it to run right... better get re-installing a new OS

You can't use 1.03a on a windows PC?

I unzipped the 1.03a files to my JKII directory, but I'm not sure if they
get used automatically or not.
What do I have to do to make sure the 1.03a files are being used
when JKII boots up?

I use Win98SE.

Thanks.

you "can" use the 1.03a that came with the SDK ... but only if its complied as a mod... not a patch... thats the nature of the quake design... mods are made to run cross-platform(linux and windows) patches are operating system specific... my only advice to everyone out there downloading this as official... if get the SDK and compile it yourselves and see just how identical to 1.03 it really is... ive done it, ive downloaded the "pre-compiled 1.03a patch"... the one i compiled out of the SDK has zero changes from the standard 1.03 patch...
the only explination i can gather from this, is a few people that didnt like the current 1.03 weapon system(and i do agree it is lame with the ass-fighting and assorted other problems), got the SDK and changed things the way they wanted them to be and put them out as "official but incomplete patches"... in essence, they created a mod... the first offical mod for JK2

Try a midair light lunge. Jump high, croutch in midair, and press forward and attack. If you don't do the light lunge, it's working. If you do, it's not.

The 1.03a "patch" is server-side ONLY. What that means is that if you run a server and want the changes, you must download the new files. However as most of us don't run a server this patch is not necessary for clients. If you want the changes of 1.03a, then all you need to do is patch to 1.03 (which most of us has already done anyways) and find a 1.03a server. No download should be necessary and you should be able to switch between 1.03 and 1.03a servers without any problems at all.

well i just got done playing on 216.208.126.103:28070 for 10 minutes... this is a 1.03a WINDOWS server that was supposed to be the "un-official patch" guess what... air lunge still works... can still turn with backstabs... ammo use is the same as the 1.03 and 1.03a linux servers... anyone care to answer why this rumor got started and spread so fast?

You played in a 1.03a winx8 server. That is unchanged.

Myst, you've proven me wrong many times, but the patch really does change many things.

went and played fora few hours on one of the advertised servers that had 1.03a unedited SDK version from another thread... these also list as 1.03a winx8... the ONLY 1.03a winx8 servers are the ones running the SDK either self-compiled or as the now famous one that everyone downloads... the server i went to in the previous post was self-compiled by the server admin... the one that everyone is talking about the false-raven changes is the one that everyone downloads... after spending all day going server hopping and watching game behavior in the downloaded version... ive noticed a few things...
1. yes.. it is a server side MOD, not a patch
2. it has been altered to fit certain players likings(will offer proof as for things to look for)
3. every server that is running the downloaded version always claims "this is the unedited SDK source code", none of the self-compiled-by-admin claims this and has none of the downloaded versions changes.
4. 1.03a has been around on linux servers ONLY from may 15th until the SDK was released.. once people started to re-compile the source, that is when the 1.03a winx8 servers started coming about... a few days AFTER that.. someone released this "raven did a partial patch" version and since then, its been taken as law...

now as promised, things to look for to notice that this downloaded version is done so poorly, that raven could not have done it...
1. look back at version 1.03... when you do a DFA or lunge... true, you cant turn... with the 1.03a"patch" now backstab cant turn... or can it? when you do a DFA you are 100% stuck going straight, with the backstab, you can turn a bit, but warp back to your starting direction... raven would have used the same code to make you non-turnable with backstab as the DFA/lunge... not cheesy warping... answer.. the people that made this did NOT know what the command to freeze direction changes and tie the to specific moves.
2. walking backwards... movement has been slowed down to about 1/2 to 2/3 forward speed... 2 reasons this flags as a non-raven change...
1. raven OUTRIGHT SAID THEY WOULDNT DO THIS BEFORE 1.03 WAS RELEASED! why on earth would they put it in a patch AFTER they said it would never happen?
2. look at it closely.. has the same warping effects that the backstabs do... again, raven has shown they can halt direction changes perfectly and modify movement speeds on the fly(heavy swings slow you down) and none of ravens movement changes have warping effects...
answer... whoever made these changes again, has very little knowledge of the inner workings of the game mechanics... but on the other hand, they have a great deal of know-how on how to simulate the movement code of the game... they just dont have the info they need to clean it up to raven standards
3. the air lunge bug in all versions of the game 1.02 and 1.03 was an easy fix, just got overlooked in 1.03's patch, just a minor change in certain animation and dat files and it basically will "overlook" certain moves in certain situations, i.e. lunge while in air... for exsample... with the downloaded 1.03a"patch" if you try to air lunge, you will notice that it will(for a fraction of a second) start to do it, but then the server bassically says "no, you cant do that" and again... you get the nice warp effect out of the move.

in closing, to whoever did this patch, great work on your effort, a little more time in it and it would be a nice mod.
but to claim this was raven's work and the "final even though its not done" patch in order to get it spread like wild-fire was just wrong... fess up and take credit for it and im sure that any other changes you make to improve on it will be noticed and appreciated, keep it hiden and have people slowly find out that your scamming them, and you will be resented forever and any work you come out with later will be scoffed at...

I don't know what servers labelled 1.03a run, since I rarely play on line (since I bought the game on march I played on line only 2 times, one v1.02 and one v1.03). But I compiled myself the source code without a single change and played it as a MOD (you have to load it) against bots. It HAS changes, a lot of it. Backstab/backsweep don't kill immediatly anymore, the lunge is not possible anymore while jumping, etc. I have no reason to lie or to spread a MOD, since I usually DON'T PLAY online. You are free to trust or not. In the meantime I'll enjoy unofficial v1.03a, which has nothing to do with the dedicated server for Linux/Win...

Those are all Raven changes kid, take a look at the code and see for yerself.

They're quick fixes that don't work incredibly well, but they're still changes that came with the source.

Open up any of the p_move.c with notepad and you can a see all the walking backwards changes. All of em came with the source.

ok

My server is running the 1.03a (mod...it's a windows box) and let me list a few of the changes I have noticed:

1. There is a small (600k) download when you connect to the server. You must have ALLOW DOWNLOADS set to ON when you connect, otherwise, you'll see the loading screen and even see the current map load (motd and all) but get disconnected when it's finished.

2. When you do a backstab, you do NOT jerk (or warp) around if you try to move. You are stuck in the same place, regardless of whether or not you move the mouse.

3. The Blue stance lunge is impossible in the air.

4. My server runs Jedi vs Merc game mode, and the Mercs spawn into the game with a Blaster Rifle and a Crossbow...and a bit of ammo for each.

Here's my server's thread:

Come play and see for yourself...

Can the source be compiled and run under Linux??? Has anyone done this??? I assume it's the multiplayer component only, correct???

Has anyone built binary executables for Linux???
