help: curse of monkey island error in windows xp

Just bought CoMI for a couple of quid. I was looking forward to the game up
until the point where I cut the rope on the cannon, and let it off. I was
then faced with a cut-scene that ran so fast all I saw where about 5 frames
and what sounded like a grunt from lechuck. The cut scene then froze at the
end with a capsized ship, and a trademark windows 'halt' ding sound. Upon
pressing ctrl alt del, I was faced with an error box titled 'SmushDS' or
smash maybe; saying "Error 80070057 while locking the sound buffer!"
I have tried to use different compatibility modes to solve this, but none
helped.tried using a program to slow the cpu down, that didnt help either.
short spec follows..
2.26 p4, 512mb ram, GF4 4400.
and another thing, the initial cut-scene at the start of the game ran
perfectly well.
thanks in advance.
