Well...I think someone already did that poll, but, anyways...I'm just starting it because recently I started to prefer the Expanded Universe, and I wonder what do you think...

Lucas does Jedi better than the EU, does the Force better, never fails to infuse his work with the mythical elements that set Star Wars apart from the rest of the sci-fi genre... and he can write the politics and the political maneuvering in a poignant way.

Jar Jar Binks, Midichlorians and Ewoks are little annoyance enough, when compaired to Callista, an endless parade of superweapons, wimpy Jedi, technobabble and the Yuzzhan Vong.

I enjoy certain aspects of the EU, however, recent events, both on these boards and on other boards I frequent, have forced me to choose sides. The movies above the EU, always.

WHat's THAT wrong with Callista?

Anybody knows what became of her? I think she will return as a Dark JEdi someday ( and luke will help her return to the light side... and Mara will be driven nuts! )

But anyways...I guess it's unfair to compare them. Movies are movies, books and comics are books and comics...

The movies are better then the EU.

I guess in the beginning, when EU just started to appear, it was good in that you could get a sense of what happened after the classic films. But now, EU has been overworked and is very messy now, IMHO. Too many things going on, too many characters, and yes, TOO MANY SUPERWEAPONS (Eye of Palpatine, sheesh, what will they think of next, Buttcrack of Palpatine? ). EU justs moves way too slowly and is very inconsistent and unorganized.

I like the EU more.

Battle is a pure form of expression. It is heart and discipline, reduced to movement and motion. In battle, the words are swept away, giving way to actions-- mercy, sacrifice, anger, fear. These are pure moments of expression.

Some people believe you aren't a true Star Wars fan if you don't like the EU. I, on the other hand, believe you can't be a true Star Wars fan if you DO like the EU. I feel that the EU is so bad that it's mere existence brings down the otherwise unsurpassable movies. The fantastic Star Wars Galaxy is polluted by these sub-standard works.

The EU for my liking is more like Star Trek than Star Wars. It is based entirely in the science-fiction genre. Star Wars is not. I'm not a fan of pure sci-fi things like Star Trek and all it's clones. But Star Wars is a political epic that just happens to be set in space.

If you loved the movies as much as I do you'd wish the EU didn't exist. That's how I see things.

Vostok! You took the words right out of my mouth--er... or should that be fingers? Anyway, I'm in an argument over which is better, EU or Movies on the boards of a "fan club" I'm in, and sometimes it seems like I'm the only one who feels that the movies are better by far. Man, I'm glad I found these forums!

There are some things I like about the EU... Kyle Katarn, of course, is just plain awesome. Human Replica Droids (specially Guri), the Infinity Comics and the SW Tales Comics. They're all great--but for the most part, they all have one thing in common: nobody expects them to be regarded as part of the SW canon. Who expects the movies to follow a video game? And the Infinities Comics are reimaginings of the movies, if one thing had happened differently (Luke's proton torpedos were duds; Luke died on Hoth), and are completely alternate universes. And the SW Tales are just plain fun! They take all of the "What ifs" and play around with them. "What if Darth Vader fought Darth Maul?" "What if Greedo's mother sued Han Solo for shooting her son?"

I do like the Tales of the Jedi Comics... they're the EU at its best (strange, considering they're co-written by one of the most notorious EU writers, KJ Anderson). They have the mythical element that is so lacking in every other example of the EU. They're the myths of the Star Wars universe.

I can enjoy the EU... I haven't for a long while... the last four or so books I read almost brought me to tears, they were so bad. But I could just let the EU be, and be content to simply not read it. The reason why I'm so vocal against the EU is because of those people who demand that Lucas respect them in his movies. I don't agree with that, not at all. It annoys the heck out of me

Yeah Monk, I think you are right...

Again.

Some people think that this kinda forum is ridiculous (i saw this in a post), but it's important to analize this, coz when EU gets mixed with SW, it can be a huge mess.

Personally, I think Lucas could be more careful about EU...There is some AMAZING things there, but there is some that even contradict the orginal saga.

I don't think Lucas should be careful of the EU, at all.

Here's the analogy: Imagine that a writer sells the movie rights to a film company and has little no involvement in the making of this movie. In the movie, something is revealed about the main character's past that wasn't revealed in the book but is, nevertheless, contrary to the author's vision. The author writes a prequel to his original book, and gives the main character a completely different past than the one that was indicated in the movie. Now, should the author have respected the movie and discarded all of the ideas he had for his own character's origins? I don't think so--I don't think there are many people who would disagree with me. So I ask again, why is it so different when the movie comes first and the books come second? George Lucas is the author, the creator, of this great universe--why should his rights as an author be any less respected because he chose to utilize the medium of cinema, rather than the printed word?

LOL Monk...it's first post that is yours I have to disagree about

Lucas, when its possible, supervises the whole EU.
If it wasn't like that, we would see terrible things about star wars universe, created by people that wants money in the first place using Lucas creations. There is things like Boba's return that I think its TOTALLY WRONG...They like to do this stuff coz they know that people love boba...and they want to earn money using the star wars "collecting instinct" (hey its boba stuff, i love boba, i have everything from boba so ill have this 2). BUT THAT MAKES NO SENSE dude!

There is some good creations..Kyle for example...
but man...there is some things that compromises the whole saga.
I've seen many people giving up with star wars because of this dumb things. Characters lose all the magic, even if you treat EU and movies differently.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you... do you mean that Lucas should be careful of the EU, as in he should personally regulate it more, or that he should include things from the EU in the movies?

Okay, well I thought you meant he should use more EU things in the movies

As for the regulation issue... I don't know... it seems like unless he demanded that they stop production on all of the EU material produced and had them start all over with a clean slate, no amount of regulation now would fix it. Seems like the EU's a lost cause.

A few certain occassions can say EU, but most of the time the movies are better. The true good side of EU are the games, Such as Jedi Outcast, Rogue Squadron, Bounty Hunter(Sweet. ), ect... And then the true best side of EU is Boba Fett. He emerges from the Sarlacc and goes on hunts until he meets up with Solo a few times.

hmmmm....yes...and no, i feel. Movies, obviously, are canon, and it's cooler seeing fights in reaimages than reading about them. Books are longer, have more detail and written action. I agree, the EU needs to be cleaned up. Too much, there is. ALL the comic books need to go, plus alot of the books. The Jedi Academy trilogy needs to be tossed (badly written, too childish, un-star wars like) with one-piece junk like Darksaber. Some of the books are very good (ALL the Timothy Zhan ones), but "There are too many" (Darth Tyranus). Also, the games rock, although for practical realities, they are very unlikely.

The movies are far better then EU, EU conflicts with the movies, such as the fact that " Boba Fett is DEAD !!! " Read it and weep fett fans !! GL has confirmed this fact.

I like both the movies and the EU. (Each has its positive and less positive points.)
I try not to worry too much about it and pick on details but it's true that there are continuity issues. Though from what I have read and been told, LFL does supervise and direct very strictly at times what can and can not be in the books, comics, games.

You have got to be kidding me! The comics are the best part of the EU--Star Wars is a visual story and the comics do much to capture the feel of SW that plain words on a page cannot. Comics even make some of the books better, like Zahn's Trilogy. True there are some stupid SW comics, just as there are a few (understatement alert) stupid novels, but if the art is good, you can overlook a lot of the story's faults, which is not true for the novels. Plus. one could argue that the comics are closer to canonical than the novelss because it seems that Lucas actually reads them. The Holocron, the double lightsaber and Aalya Sacura--minus the name Coruscant, these are the obvious cases of the EU being included in the movies, and all of them were introduced in a comic (Dark Empire, Tales of the Jedi and the ongoing Star Wars series).

maybe i misstated. I meant that the ridiculouly exaggerated comics need to go. Some are believable and all, but abut the emperor comign back to life over and over... i dunno. Plus then if you haven't read them, the other books are confusing when they refer to them, and they're hard to get becuz they're older.

you can't compare the EU to the movies, but some of the EU is just as good as the movies like the heir to the empire trilogy but the EU has been extremely overworked and is getting somewhat ridiculous they should have left it alone after the corellian trilogy and the x-wing series but i guess that was too much to ask for

I agree on that with Jedi_Monk, the best Star Wars EU are certainly the comics. Off course there are those that aren't as good and such but there are many that adhere to the true Star Wars style and surpass even the books.

The latest "Rite of Passage" comic was just awesome, pure Star Wars, no sci-fi technobabble but Jedi and other characters getting thrown into a harrying and believable adventure and some characters with depth surpassing challengers in a realistic (for SW then) fashion. A great story.
