Older games on windows 7
I hvae 2 new PC's which are the latest (greatest my ass) versions of Windows 7. How do I get all of my old cool ass games such as DF, JK, MOTS, SOTE, etc... to run on it?
Please help!!

A late reply, nevertheless still a reply.
You should only experience difficulties installing any of the games if your operating system is 64-bit. The installers are only 16-bit so will outright refuse to run. You could theoretically install the games on a 32-bit machine (either an older computer or a virtual machine on Windows 7) then move the files to your Windows 7 system and modify a registry file, however this could prove difficult! The other much easier option (and the option I eventually took) was to purchase the entire Jedi Knight series on Steam (no need to install and relatively cheap - I paid £14.99 for DF, DF2, MOTS, JO AND JA).
There's a graphical glitch on 64-bit systems for Dark Forces II and MOTS however there is a simple workaround available on the Steam forums which works perfectly.
SOTE is a nightmare to install and run. I've heard it's possible albeit incredibly difficult. Still, worth it to play it again!

You could also emulate the N64 version of SotE; I don't know whether there are major differences.

Most likely the best bet!

You can use compatibility mode for most things (right click), however in this case you need the replacement installers (fan-made) which are found on JKhub.

(the old alternative link at jkhub.massassi.net is down but the original link is active again!)

Yeah, I can't launch Mysteries of the Sith from Steam at all. I launch it, steam pops up saying "Preparing to run" or what ever, then nothing happens
JK1 runs almost absolutely flawless, no problems there.

Is there anyway to play JKE on Win7 (64bit) without using steam? I've looked around and I have been able to install the basic JK on my pc but running mods or the unoffical patch seem to kill it right out.

I have Windows7pro 64-bit and I can run all the JK series on my pc, just fyi. I have the original disc versions of course, so I can't say what may or may not work with the steam based versions. If there's a problem there, you should contact whoever is in charge on steam or whoever ported them for that format at LA.
Windows 7 Professional edition has the option to use a feature called "XP Mode." To use it however you need to download it from the microsoft site AND you have to install windows genuine advantage activation or whatever it's called. So if you can stomach that, you can get greater compatibility (for stuff that would work in XP that is). But I assure you that JK/Mots work here. The only problem I run into is that the loading/menu screens have the colors all distorted (or appear as solid black) UNLESS You run them in a window (so small menu screens in good color or else messed up in full screen). There are patches and hacks on jkhub.net that assist with this or you can use command lines to help out.
Some people give up on all this and just "keep around" an extra pc (or multiboot partition) with Windows 98SE on it for stuff like this. But whatever floats your boat...
For dos games like Dark Forces, I recommend DosBox to run the games at proper speed, with full sound and such. It's free and easy to use, highly recommended. However with DF1 specifically, there is the ongoing DarkXL project that might interest you. Check it out!
As for JK Enhanced, the last time I tried to run it I still had XPpro and 2000pro if I can recall, but I'm pretty sure it works on Vista/7 as well. I just haven't had time to try it. I don't see why it wouldn't... but you can try contacting the author of JKE or post on their forum at jkhub (though he hasn't updated in a long time).

I was able to get JK to run on Win7(64) and have encountered the menu discoloration that you mentioned. Though I have not been successful at getting JKE to work. after running the unoffical patch the game no longer works. I think in the end it will be buy a cheap used laptop for my older games and go from there. Unless MS releases another patch for Win7 fixing said issue. We can hope right? lol
