Concussion confirmation?

OK, it isn't official, but check this latest preview:

Each of these new previews offers one small nugget different from the rest. In this one it is the statement

We saw the DL-44 in the trailer, but the concussion rifle is new news.

Great! I hope they go for the way it worked in Dark Forces, rather than how it worked in JK - it was too similar to the other weapons there.

Well, if that can be confirmed, it's great news. Thanks for the heads-up, Mike.

I didn't play JK in MP either, but I really liked the conc. in SP. Great for clearing a room of unwanted enemy infestations. I hope they make the weapon sound similar to how it did in JK.

I wonder what my death animation will look like as I die in a big white explosion with my surround sound system after getting targeted by a Trandoshen with a concussion rifle ... ah, well ... I have a few months to think about it.

I agree with Count D00ku, the concussion rifle is a masterpiece, and yes, lets hope that you can use the rail detonator too.

Sigh... well let's ALSO hope that the conc rifle doesn't return in ALL of it's former glory: i.e. being the Ownage weapon of the series.

Being a saberist at heart, but still partial to cool explosive weapons, I still remember what JK multiplayer conc rifles were like. The combination of lag, poor saber hit detection, speed, force destruction, and jump, made the concussion rifle ultimate uber l33t. Even at close range the thing schooled That game was all about the conc, the rail detonator being the close second. But i'm sure everything will turn out for the best.

The old Dark Forces conc was cool. Hopefully in Jedi Academy we're not plagued with the nightmare of the uber concussion rifle, but I'm glad it's back, or at least it's strongly suggested that it is.

Yeh, balance is the key. Each weapon should have advantages and disadvantages, or at least people who have preferences for different ones, otherwise what would be the point usong any other? I'm more excited bout the DL-44, such a cool gun

Haha, do you remember Canyon Oasis? Whoever made it to the top and got the Conc could just camp there and pick everyone off - wait for it to respawn and repeat

I remember many insults flying due to that - and concentrated Rail fire in the direction of the guy with the Conc

Well, one way to balance the concussion rifle in MP is...simply don't put it in there. Make it an SP only gun, and the problem's solved.

Of course, that would then annoy a lot of people.

Another way to try and balance it is to reduce damage significantly against someone using Force Protection.

Other ways to balance it would be to include a slower movement speed for those carrying heavier weapons, and making the rate of fire of those weapons slower as well. After all, in the real world, the firing rate of a bazooka is a lot slower than the firing rate of a machine gun, but it does far more damage. It would make sense to me for them to introduce this kind of balancing for the more powerful weapons.

Like Stormy said, the best way to make bigger guns more balanced and still keep them effective is simply achieved by slowing down the fire rate keeping everyone happy... I only hope that Raven knows this too

Guys I just played JK and now I realize I actually HATE THE CONCUSSION RIFLE!! It's boring I like the rail detonator though, I mixxed those two weapons up

Each to their own.

Every player has their own favourite weapons. I was never that fond of the Rail Detonator, personally.

No no no,you forgot something.I dunno if I'm going to offend anyone with this but first of all,no offense.

I think we should be able to block the conc with the light saber.After all,why can't we do it,the conc shot is just a bullet of pure beam energy,so is the lightsaber.So why not?


When you slice a person, do you slice him with the fastest stroke, or do you forcefully incapacitate him?

Wrong, the Concussion Rifle fires bolts of compressed air that make a concussive force that can break bones and shredd muscules. Deadly eh? It'd destroy the saber. And can lightsaber's deflect air at a high pressure? No.

Well ... I think that means saber blocking shouldn't work. But you should be able to force push them away.

I always thought they should get rid of that secondary fire.... the main danger of the conc (at least to me ) was that if the enemy charged you you tended to blow yourself up as well.
but giving it a secondary fire without an area effect negated this disadvantage.

although, i still liked the secondary effect cos it looked like the rail gun from quake 2, still probably the coolest weapon effect ever... but put it on another weapon!

maybe the secondary fire could be using the butt of the gun, or setting it on overload and dropping it... causing a massive explosion when it goes off, but destroying the weapon.



Force pushing compressed air away sounds a bit wrong, but maybe it would disipate it's power a bit.

If it is compressed air, then surely it would decomress over time, making the effect smaller the further it went, another good balancing factor.

I really like that idea ... it would send out a seismic shockwave like in the asteroid chase of AotC ... just use Force Speed to get the heck out of there!

If not pushing it away (i.e. repel) at least dissipate.

Ug, the "Conc" and the Rail detonater totally ruined the multiplayer in JK in my humble opinion... But for some reason it was much less of a problem in MotS.

On a similiar note... anyone else notice that the Rail Detonator actually does much more damage, fires faster, uses its own ammo and has about the same projectile speed as the conc but people in multiplayer still seemed to find the Conc more effective for some reason... I guess it was for the sole fact that it had a larger blast radius... Anyways, I always like the Rail det better myself...

But if we're talking the Dark Forces Concussion rifle then I'm all for it... The sound was much cooler than the JK conc, and the projectile was invisible until explosion... which was practically instant.

I think in order to balance the conc out correctly a few things should be done:

Lower the damage and speed slightly from the JK1 version... that was just alittle bit too uber.

Make the concussion blast much weaker the farther away the "projectile" explodes. So the closer you are the more damage it does, but also the more dangerous it would be to you. It would also make it primarily a medium range weapon, since sniping would be impossible because of shorter range.

Add even more obvious of a kick back as to prevent a conc projectile from always hitting its target... Make 5 or so shots in a row move the gunner back a few feet to force alittle bit of readjusting.

And lastly, I think a succesfuly force push used on a conc projectile should explode the projectile where its at instead of unrealistically sending it right back at the attacker. That way a skilled jedi could use force push on a Conc wiedling opponent just as he fires, having deadly results for the gunner, but if the force push is used to late it will still hurt the jedi.

Anyways... I hope the conc is more like the Dark Forces version... The JK1 version had really stupid sounds, and just looked like a long rectangular pipe with a clip sticking out of it... Atleast the DFs conc had style...

I Just wish they'd bring back the REAL Repeater again... That was one of my favorite weapons, especially in DF.

i agree with about everything you said Silent_Thunder.
DF conc WAS cooler. Less force the further away seems a good idea.

In general, i would have thought the CONC would do less damage than an explosive weapon, but with a greater blast radius (and throwing the target further). It should also probably ignore shields.

Of course, if you use the DF conc then there will be no projectiles to block, but assuming there are projectiles i think that having force push detonate them is an excellent idea. devs take note!

Another cool idea for secondary fire would be something that worked like the shock rifle (i think) in unreal tournament, where if you hit a slower moving projectile with a faster moving one then it causes a much bigger explosion. I always liked that idea as it felt like you needed more skill to pull it off.
