Currently theres around 200+ playing on the MSN ZONE, depending on your time zone. Most are poor scenario games but you can find RM & DM games also. Not bad going for a game soon to be 3 years old!

As for balance I personally think SWGB has better balance than most RTS, including AoM.

Amen to that. It only required both CC and SWGB only one patch to balance things out.

Well, in actuality, LA kinda just dropped us after one patch. I doubt they would have made another one no matter what. Things still aren't great in balancing.

The TF carbon penalty gives them a huge disadvantage which isn't offset by not having to build prefabs. Apart from that, I don't have any problems with the balance.

From my experience, people don't play the gungans or confeds much anymore (gungans are just too defensive and naval oriented for people to play much, and the confeds gte most of their bonuses late game).

Well, we can't say it's really THAT difficult to balance a game which has 8 very, very similar civilizations. 1 or 2 unique units with about 4 unique techs per side doesn't give much room for imbalance, you know... At least it's still better than AoE2

Completly unique sides is the way to go in the next SW RTS... If LA doesn't do that, they will get completely owned in the sales. Also, it would really be stupid to keep the unique units/techs stuff, since most RTS have unique sides now. Ever wondered why there are more peeps playing SC than SWGB even if SC is older and has worst graphics?

And RoN is just the same ****, except that you have some more unique units/bonuses to mess with.

Yes, I'm Blizzard/WC3 to the core and proud of it. The WC community needs a loyal representative in these parts of the web

For once I agree with every single point you made, Darth (although SWGB beats any Blizzard game hands down, but you never said it didn't)

Even though I don't like the last part of your post (and I could easily start off another horrible and bloody debate on this), I'll keep my big mouth shut to celebrate this event

Actually, the TF's ability to not need prefabs helps them boom.

A very good player will chose Naboo and beat you in T2. Though they suck later on.

I tend to pwn with the Rebels. I think the A Wings are possibly the most dominant weapon in the game.

Gungans are eh... And low inters like to try to t3 rush with Confeds and use all Geonosian Warriors... bad idea.

Confeds are very good for T1/T2 rushes because the free basic training gives you enough nova to build 4 mounties without mining any, whereas all the other civs can only build 2.

Also, reeks can be useful for taking out towers if you're strike rushing in T3.

The TF not needing prefabs doesn't help them boom. By the time you're booming, the carbon cost and build time of prefabs is trivial. The carbon penalty means it takes longer to gather the carbon to make CCs, which is not trivial. In fact, as you boom the cabon penalty hurts you more, because it's 20% of a much larger quantity than earlier in the game. Although the carbon and motivator upgrades offset it, you're still at a disadvantage because the other civs will be upgrading as well and getting further ahead of you.

25 carbon is nothing. Even in T1 you'll need a food centre, carbon centre, power core, 2 troop centres and possibly an animal nursery. Then you'll need to start pumping out recruits as you're going T2. Add up all that carbon and you'll see that 20% of it is more than you'll save on the prefabs you would have needed.

Even if you're only building 1 TC and going for a fast T3, you'll need even more carbon for a strike rush.

Then add in the fact that you'll have to spend extra res walling your turrets and PCs because you can't get house walls.

Yeah, the TF gets really pounded by the carbon deficiency late game, when their most powerful units are carbon costly and there aren't many houses to save on. Also, the lack of houses means that they don't get any free protection for things like towers.

The animals build far too slow and die too easily to be considered worthwhile. You are much better of saving your food for an uber econ, and getting to the latter ages faster, when their trading bonuses and heavie ups can come into play. Although I agree that the reek is yhe most decent one in the bunch.

Well, a reek still doesn't equal a pummel...

But then what, we got an "anti-worker" animal and an "anti-infantry" one. They can be replaced with strike mechs...it's kinda pointless.
Although it is fun to have animals

Sometimes, when I'm bored, I just try to make animals only just for fun. Takes a LOT of reeks to take now a fortress.

But the fact that the animals only cost food is very tempting. I quite like playing the Confeds myself, though I can't really tell you why.

I agree that nexus and acklays are not much use for anything. A reek is as good as a pummel against turrets (although not against any other buildings) thanks to their bonus. Add in the fact that they only cost food and come from the nursery, and they can sometimes be useful in early T3 when you're concentrating on building strikes and don't have a heavy factory yet. This only really applies if you find unhoused turrets where your strikes want to be though, so it's not something you can use every game.

I remember massing reeks in one of the scenarios... With Sev Rance (or something like that) to back them, I cou ld destroy the small reps bases. The acklay slaughters troopers, but they usually get shot before they close in. I never used Nexu.

Yeah what's the point in using the nexu anyway? It's way too weak to kill workers before it gets killed itself.

I always thought that it should be buildable in t2.
