Post Happy Chinese New Year!

A bit early I know, but on the 22nd, it's the Chinese New Year - The year of the Monkey.

I find the chinese interpretation of my personality very accurate indeed. What animal hides in your heart?

I was born in the Year of the Boar.

People born in the Year of the Boar are honest and tolerant and make good friends, but tend to expect the same from everyone else, and more often than not they end up disappointed. They thrive in the arts as entertainers.

Famous people born in the Year Of The Boar:
Bamber Gascoigne, Dudley Moore, David Bowie, Elton John, Gerry Rafferty

Year of the Snake

People born in the year of the Snake are romantic and deep-thinking, wise and charming, although they tend to dismiss others too quickly and are a bit stingy with money. Ideal jobs include teaching or psychiatry.

Famous people born in the Year Of The Snake:
Jean Simmons, Val Doonican, Sir Roger Banister, Burt Bacharach, Neil Diamond, Paddy Ashdown,Vivienne Westwood, Bob Dylan

Um... That doesnt sound like me
Year of the monkey, eh?

Year of the Horse 1990.

If you are born in the Year of the Horse then you are amazingly hard working and very independent. Although you are intelligent and friendly, you can sometimes be a bit selfish. Careerwise you would make a good scientist or poet.

Famous people born in the Year Of The Horse:
Ian Cuthbertson, Robert Wagner, Rolf Harris, Helmit Kohl, Clint Eastwood,Barbara Streisand, John Thaw, Aretha Franklin

Rats are said to be imaginative, charming and very generous to those they love - although they do have a tendency to be quick-tempered and over-critical. They are supposed to make good writers, critics and publicists.

Famous people born in the Year Of The Rat:
Ron Moody, Marlon Brando, Burt Reynolds,Ursula Andress, Englebert Humperdinck

hahah so true. Both in the positive and negitave sence. The only thing a bit off is the good writer. I'm terrible at writing, in french and english.

Not to brag or anything but I think it sounds about true. Except the well-liked part. I have many friends but also quite a few people whom I dont have a good relationship with. We either like each other or we dont.

BTW, kinda off subject, but leXX I really hate that avatar, because it is one of many creepy things that I hated about Princess Mononoke, a very creepy anime film....

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!! Eat lots of jiaozi!

HERE are some ideas for celebrating, including this one...

Quote:
Offer a Sacrifice to the Kitchen God - Many families have a poster of the Kitchen God in their kitchen. The custom is to offer a ceremonial sacrifice to the Kitchen God, to make sure that he gives a good report on the family's behavior when he returns to heaven. Sticky Cake (Neen Gow) is popular, or children may rub honey on him.

I was born in 1962, it was the year of the water tiger.
not only are there 12 animal zodiac signs, but each animal
also has five elements
fire, water, wood, earth and metal then there are
positive and negative stems, so the entire complete
chines zodiac wheel takes 120 years to fully complete itself.

their zodiac and astrology was first designed solely for
the Emperor, it was a lunar calendar geared towards
knowing when it was most favourable for him and his wives
and concubines to produce offspring.

the 12 animal signs are based on the order in which animals
came to pay respects to Buddah. even though the cat is highly
venerated in chinese culture, the cat is not one of the 12 signs
because the cat was walking by itself and being aloof,
and did not go to see Buddah.

*anyhow i know loads more i will post later*

Toi la nguoi viet. Neu em la nguoi viet, va khong noi lao, em se gui thu cho toi lai. Chuc mung nam hai ngan le bon moi.

If you're saying "W...T...F..." after reading above, just ignore it and go off saying, "I am not truly Vietnamese as I do not know much of my own language."

haha hobbit your right, I don't know much of my own language, my mom and dad have been trying to teach me but I can't ever pick it up that well, because we'll start off one week, then my dad skips a week, then we kinda just slack off... lmao I was going to a Buddhist temple to learn Vietnamese, but I couldn't stand it there we had no air conditioning in the 102 degree weeather...

so hobbit: I will finish learning my language someday, as of now I can only speak basic Vietnamese and I can figure out the words to some of the writing if I know how to say the word... other than that... no I don't know

but the parts that i can figure out of your message: you are vietnamese, if you are vietnamese, or if you are lying, i will someting something something. Happy New year something something...

is that enough to prove I am vietnamese?

Good enough. At least your learning. And yes, it is enough to prove that you are. And translated, what I said before was:

"I am Vietnamese. If you are too, and you are not lying, then you should send me an email back to me. Happy new year, it is 2004!"

btw, it is normal for traditional Vietnamese people to not have air conditioning. I know since my grandfather had never gotten A/C until two years ago. Odd, isnt it? Even Im not accustomed to 102 degree weather. Oh well. Have you ever been to Vietnam? I haven't.

yes, I have been to Vietnam, 2 times Once when I was 4, and another time when I was 8, but that was when my grandmother died . Most of my family is still in Vietnam, on both my father and mothers side, but all my grandparents are deceased...

An Introduction, Grasshopper

2637 BC was when chinese astrology began
in the 61st year of emperor's Huang Ti's reign.

a complete cycle of the chinese zodiac
takes 120 years to complete,
the 77th cycle of the chinese zodiac
started on feb 5th, 1924
and it will not complete
itself until the year 2044.

according to legend buddha summoned all the animals
to come and see him, before he departed the earth.
only 12 came to bid him farewell. so as a reward
he named a year of the zodiac after each animal
which came to pay him their respects.
the 12 animals came in this order:

the rat
the ox
the tiger
the rabbit
the dragon
the snake
the horse
the sheep
the monkey
the rooster
the dog
and the boar

the complete cycle consists of 12 animal signs
each animal sign also has five elemental signs
and each element also has two stems called
positive and negative (as in Yin and Yang)

so the math 12x5=60(x2)=120 years.

the five elements are

wood (ruled by the planet Jupiter)
fire (ruled by the planet mars)
earth (ruled by the planet saturn)
metal (ruled by the planet venus)
water (ruled by the planet mercury)

the lunar calendar begins each day at 11pm
and the 24 hours of a day are divided into
twelve sections of two hours each. each time
period is ruled by a different animal sign
as in western astrology the animal in the hour
of your birth factors into a persons personality.

the year of the fire horse is considered
extremely unlucky in chinese superstiton,
just like the black cat,
chinese people try to avoid having children
in the year of the fire horse.
the last year of the fire horse was in 1967
(do we have any winners in the Pagoda?)

places are people too.

not only do people have chinese
astrology signs, so too do countries
and as such these atributes help define
the nation it was born into.
an example of this is the United States of America
which was founded in 1776 (year of the monkey)
other examples are
France 1958 (year of the dog)
Canada 1867 (year of the rabbit)
Hong Kong 1842 (year of the tiger)

talk to the animals
compatability among the 12 signs

just like the elemental signs in western astrology
there are triads of compatability among the animal
signs of the chinese horoscope, they are as follows:

the action doers: Rat, Dragon & Monkey
the steadfast: Ox, Snake & Rooster
the seekers: Tiger, Horse & Dog
the emotional guides: Rabbit, Sheep & Boar

when animals attack!
incompatibilty among the 12 signs

signs which are directly opposite one another
on the wheel of chinese astrology often make
the most imcompatable matches amongst people

thus these animals don't play well together:

rat ~ horse
ox ~ sheep
tiger ~ monkey
rabbit ~ rooster
dragon ~ dog
snake ~ boar
horse ~ rat
sheep ~ ox
monkey ~ tiger
rooster ~ rabbit
dog ~ dragon
boar ~ snake

and now I'm going to start dancing like a monkey!

The Year of the Wood Monkey

everything will be workable this year.
there will be success in even impossible ventures.
there will be inventiveness & improvisations.
politics, finance and diplomacy will engage
in a giant poker game trying to out bluff one another.
an amusing and exciting year when people will be
given the opportunity to try their hand in the game.
no direct confrontations in this year and people
will be able to laugh at their mistakes & antics.
a year for trying to get a better deal by outsmarting
the other guy, and because this will be going on quite
a bit, it may be hard to decide who is really getting
the upper hand in many situations. an extremely progressive
year. the lucky imp of a monkey will urge us on this year
to gamble, speculate and exploit opportunities whenever
and wherever possible. the year of the monkey is not a year
for the slow witted or faint at heart. the motto for this
year is: "Don't take No for An Answer!"

because people are born under the influence of the monkey
certain similarity traits in personality will exist, however,
because there are 5 different elemnts for each animal sign,
each different person, born into a year of the monkey will also
be different from one another too.

Year of the Dragon -

Dragons tend to be popular individuals who are always full of life and enthusiasm, with a reputation for being fun-loving. They make good priests, artists and politicians.

although I think according to the Chinese year (the new year dates are different), my birthday was before the year of the dragon in 1988, so i think im supposed to be a rabbit?

i dont know im not sure...
