In Regards to "Increasing lameness."

You know, I'm not a spam fan. Nor am I all for complete rubbish. But who cares if people are posting spam or nonsense? Don't like it, don't post on the thread. It's just this kind of "SPAM SPAM! DELETE THE SPAM! HOLY CRAP KILL THE SPAM SPAM!" mentality that caused some of the most fun, interesting, well behaved, and non-spamming members to leave the forum-- or at the very least take pronolgued breaks.

Look, I'm a member, plain and simple. And by no means do I want to threaten or cross or make a joke of your authority as a Mod-- but please, for the love of the forum, here, just let this one slide. Deleting post after post and thread after thread will just result in this forum's death. We have few enough topics as is-- so what if some are spam? It's not like it's cluttering the place. Yes, repeated posting of "..spam.." is a little excessive, to say the least, and I'll agree with you that it's childish and immature and...well...rediculous, and I'm sure we could all have lived without it, but once one goes on a spam hunt (I'm not specifying you, I'm just making a generalization) things get deleted and deleted and deleted-- and even some things we like! I mean, this is a Monkey Island Message Board...we're not going to have something interesting or deep every single thread. We hold the right to goof off and act stupidly and all of that loveliness-- was it not Gubyrush himself who stuffed a duck down his pants just for the sheer fun of it?

Live and let live! Please and with sugar on top.

I can't seem to think up a good signature.

Well since you have NOT been around for the past few months you have not noticed.

Pit o' ye Damned has about three members left who are engaged in one conversation in about the same three threads. Not only is it more than annoying, the conversation may as well be written in code, because nobody knows what the Hell they are talking about, except them. And almost all of the topics have gone so far off topic, that literally nobody knows what the topic is anymore. Almost all of the original members are all gone. Ever wonder why?

Some of the "newer" members here post sheer nonsens, that nobody should have to endure. I've had SEVERAL complaints about it, but since I am not assigned to this area of LF, I couldn't do anything about it.

A few days ago, that all changed. I guess you could say I am "filling in" for those who cannot be here. The admin gave me this permission, because I have been around long enough to know better, and they trust my judgement.

I am not here to rule with an iron fist, but SOMEBODY, SOMETIME has to be around to clean up the mess, that's what I plan to do.

The fun never has to stop, but "lameness" needs to stop, because let's face it, this forum is a mess right now.

So Guybrush122, I will give you the same advice I give everyone else here, if you don't like it, don't participate, otherwise, have fun.

Warm regards,
Darth Groovy

Just to clarify, this isn't a sudden movement to destroy the forum. The forum was fine as it was a month or so ago -- it's only in the past few weeks that this behaviour has become an issue.

This forum has been fine for years (to an extent), but for some reason people have just been getting out of control as of late and the posts are so bad that they're likely to drive new members away, as well as older members who just cannot be bothered with the rubbish being posted (haven't you noticed that a lot of the "veteran" members simply aren't posting anymore?).

To be honest, this behaviour can probably be targetted at around three specific people, as Darth Groovy just said. However, rather than falling down like a ton of bricks upon them and singling them out, I figured it'd be a better idea to simply post the sticky message and hope that people get the message.

Nobody's going on a spam hunt -- practically every thread in this forum is acceptable. It's the posts within that are causing problems, and end up completely derailing what is potentially an interesting thread. There's also some non-post related idiocy, such as a person a week or so ago who thought it'd be amusing to have a sig which is about 1000 lines long.

Please don't make any more posts about this. If everyone simply reverts to how they were acting a couple of months ago, nothing will change. If people continue to post crap, then we won't bother deleting your posts. You'll be warned for it, and then banned (either temporarily or permanently, depending on how much of a jackass you're being) if you continue.

This would have been dealt with earlier by speaking to specific people before it grew into a huge problem, but since I've been pretty busy I've been unable to, and it's basically spiralled out of control. I'd rather not have to take any action at all, but unless you guys make an effort to improve things I'll have to.

Thanks!

In regards to in regards to "Increasing lameness."

The closure of the In Regards to "Increasing lameness." thread is exactly what I call bad moderating. I will call it by its name since I don't care whether I'm getting banned or not anymore.

Closing threads should either happen a lot earlier or not at all. Natty's inane London people- have you seen this man? should have been closed before it got any replies. Yuffy's threads are inspiring and lead to interesting (if a little spammy sometimes) dialogues, yet they are ones that will be closed.

Now I didn't like some of the stuff that happened lately. If I devined the three offenders correctly, I don't think they will continue this stuff. It got a little out of hand. If the mods PMed the offenders I'm sure they would gladly agree to tone down in the future.

My huge sig was meant to terrorize a little and also be a demonstration. I still think the size of sigs should be limited as it used to be. It's getting out of hand. People sign with their favorite quotes, they have tons of animated inane pics. I felt provoked. Content is getting shorter, while the rest gets longer and more childish. In the good old times you didn't have sigs or avatars or smilies. I don't think they are bad in themselves, but they are abused. I like it how you can express what kind of person you are with a 70x70 px image. I like that you can have links to your web site that are more informative than the standard www button.

You wanna see bad threads with bad posts by bad posters? Take a look at Forum Games, I dare you. Now, you could just argue that I should not go there (which I don't do anymore), but these people come over here and post in the same manner that they do over there. I have complained about it a lot, I have added certain people who don't contribute anything - anything at all - to my Ignore List. It helps little.

Off-topicness is good. It signals that the original topic is over and the conversation has taken a new direction. I don't see why people complain about it.

I will end my little rant in the hope that the thread won't be closed and can instead lead to a discussion and a better atmosphere around.

I think you're failing to see the point here. I don't give a damn if you post off-topic threads, or reply with off-topic responses. I couldn't care less if a thread about the state of the world's economy turns into a discussion about the Queen's latest toenail incident.

By all means, discuss whatever the heck you like in here. Just don't start doing idiotic stuff which is blatantly engineered simply to provoke people (your signature stunt is an obvious example, although DrMcCoy can lay claim to credit for his "..spam.." post).

I think there's some kind of misconception here that we're introducing new rules. We're not. All I'm asking is that you all tone down the recent uprise in moronic behaviour and carry on with the relatively peaceful antics of the past.

As I've said twice now, the only reason I made the sticky was to give a global warning to all so that I wouldn't have to go to the hassle of dealing with each member individually, and then having somebody else go and do the same thing a few days later because they saw the other guy seemingly get away with it.

It's clearly caused me more hassle doing it this way though, since you've all gotten defensive on me. You guys should be happy that there's an almost non-existent ruleset around here. If you guys were to post even a miniscule fraction of what you do on the Star Wars LucasForums, it'd be deleted before you'd even refreshed the page to check for replies.

Please, just be reasonable. Post whatever you like, just don't fall into the "prat" category of members. Before you submit a post, simply ask yourself "Will this contribute to this thread in a positive way, and encourage further discussion?". If not, perhaps you should just press your back button.

Also, this is being merged with the other thread since there really isn't any point in having two.

On one side, I don't feel guilty. But I possibly don't make sense all the time.

On the other hand, I think it's the cuddly atmosphere of this forum that make people act like what you seem to dislike.

In the end it's all about originality, not on or off topic "spam" or not "spam".

I think.

Of course I might be mighty wrong.

I dunno... I actually appreciate the warnings. Thank you Thrik!

It's better than showing up to find a whole bunch of threads locked down/ deleted with no explanation, and everybody scrambling to figure out "Why?" and becoming upset at the moderation team, who belive that they are just doing thier job by doing what they think is best for the forums overall.

Now if severe moderation has to take place, at least we will know why, and we can't say we weren't properly warned. I think heeding a clearly phrased and justly posted warning asking members collectively to enact preemptive change over thier own unwelcome behavior before the moderation has to really become heavy-handed is a welcome step in the right direction in moderator/ member relations.

A warning is always better than a crack-down... I'll take a warning anyday.
Especially when I know that I've done someting that is actually worthy of harsher punishment.

Edlib is right, last time this happened Murta, myself and a few other mods just did a straight clamp-down and there was utter outcry; a lot of people left as a result, myself included. The warning is much better for everyone, really

The thing about that ****ing massive signature stunt was that it was aimed at one person who posts in the Monkey Island forums, but it appeared on every single post that person had ever done, across all the forums.

There IS a way to turn your signature off in any given set of forums. Before you post, just un check the "Show signature" box. Simple as that.

I just pmed a guy in the Jedi Knight forums, to shorten his sig. I mean, I had to scroll three times just to read his sig. And I have a 20" monitor with 1024 X 768 resolution.

How rediculous.

You run at 1024x768? I have only a 19" screen and run at 1280x1024!

Well the sig stunt was worthless. I think I'll go for the straight route and PM the idiots people who need to get a blog to tell the world about their views. However inane those views may be, I'm not judging.

What good is that when you have already posted? Also, it's not per forum, but per post, that you can turn off your sigs.

See my sig? QED.

I have to say, I will intervene when certain people (mostly that famous 3) don't even give a potentially good thread a chance before going completely off topic and posting stuff that's incoherent (something even Ray isn't guilty of anymore) and just plain annoying, at which point I'll probably try to steer things around again (if it's not too late). I haven't posted a thread in a while, but I'm pretty sure that people who are would also be getting fed up that their serious thread isn't getting the thought and attention it should. Fair enough if it get's no posts, it's not interesting, but I see no reason why it should be used as a breeding ground for spammers. We have asked kindly for them to stop and have "reminded" them of what we think of as decent enough posts and what aren't. We're not talking about spam and not spam, we're talking about the kind of thing that's likely to annoy people. There's no stamping down here, it's just a friendly reminder.

I agree with Alien (who recently PM'd me to explain my errors from some posts/behavior from a while back). I think you should be PM'ing people to point out their errors.

If this was done in a mature, firm yet fair way - people would respond. People don't respond well to being talked down to however, and I suspect that any PM's where a warning has been issued BEFORE a "quiet chat" might just get peoples backs up.

Wow. Although this thread already pointed out that there is a relation between screen size and resolution, it definitly spreads the spirit of christmas. Let's face it, we love and need each other and each one of us is right. And I couldn't agree more with edlib, Thriks thingy is ways better that what happend one and a half years ago.

....yeah but you didn't respond to my last PM Ray.....I've moved on!

On the (off) topic of resolution I'm 17" and 800x600, but I always lag a few years behind everyone else. Being 30 next year, I'm retro with everything......something to do with not wanting to admit being old I think.

17", is that widescreen? If so, you'd be better to have a much larger resolution and just make text and icon bigger (if that's your problem with higher resolutions) you'll find things are a lot better then.

How ironic. The "I don't care if threads go offtopic" thread has gone offtopic

I have a laptop. a 15" LCD SXGA+ screen, I'm currently running the highest mine can get, 1400x1050. It's a correct ratio until 1280x1024, too!

Widescreen? No that's about ú40.00 worth of budget monitor to replace my 15" which I was using until last year.

Unless someone has anything to add, this has veered quite nicely to a topic we can at least all talk about, as apose to someone abruptly coming in with two or 3 words and changing the course of the topic completely.

after my laptop was stolen 3 months ago, insurance finally kicked in and gave me a laptop woth a 17" widescreen display. Oddly enough, most newer games seemed to adapt nicely without the loss of anything at the top or bottom and without stretching of the screen, which is handy. DVD veiwing is a lot better too, although it didn't work at all before I downloaded and installed a paid version of WindDVD 5 Gold (I bought it ages ago which is why it's so old, but still, it has everything I need, so why pay for more?) despite it already having it's own decoder.

MY laptop has got only a 15" display for a 1024x768 resolution. But it has an really cool AV-out thingy, which means I'm playing most of the games or watch DVD's on my supa dupa phly Widescreen-TV (oh, yes, and it's a SONY ^^).

RoyTordesLegend, I think this message has already gotten a response to be honest. Now that everyone is aware that the recent behaviour has been causing some headaches, with any luck it'll stop.

I'm not against you guys you know, and I'm not posting this to flex my proverbial e-penis. The warning was intended to prevent anybody from getting their posts deleted, or banned, or even singled out.

I don't think you all seem to realise that we've actually gone well out of our way to defend your freedom of speech in this forum in the past. There was once a huge ruckus behind the scenes at LucasForums due to moderators from other forums enforcing their rules here without being aware of what kind of things we allow here.

That's all in the past now, and those involved have turned out to be great moderators now, but it's an example of how we're not just here to smack down rules on you all. We want this forum to be incredibly "loose" (:Č), but if some moderation isn't maintained (just to save it from going over the brink) then it may end up turning into an administrative issue, which definitely isn't good for anyone.

All we're asking is a bit of self-moderation. Joshi hit it spot on in his previous post where he mentioned people completely derailing threads before others even get a chance to have a discussion. That is what was causing problems, and what complaints have arisen from.

But as I say, hopefully it's all over now. Most people who actually take part in this community and are aware of how dodgy it got seem to have acknowledged it, and I hope that the forum can return to how it's (almost) peacefully lived for many years now!

Well, Thrik, when you think about it, the forums are still peaceful. Maybe I haven't been active enough lately to notice, but this is just a minor bump. Who cares if threads are closed? It's worth to sacrifice a couple closed threads every few months to keep the forums free for the rest of the time.

Haven't I? Hmm. I mean I noticed that people were getting mad about the thread closing and stuff, but I still think this is just a small bump that no one will care about in the future anyway. We've had worse.

Thrik, you DO like flexing your e-penis - admit it.....especially now it's been SUPERSIZED!!!

This place does get worse press than it actually deserves though. On Skinkies old patch, before Skinkie ruled the roost, I was told to f*ck off and have relations with a canine, simply for venturing in for the first time and saying hello. There was no fuss about that until I made a fuss myself on the feedback forums, at which point everyone thought it was handbags at dawn from me.

Ah the old Sam and Max forum greeting. Brings back memories.

I'm soo glad AND PROUD Sean has learned to ignore me whatever i say. I even was nearly made a moderator there because of that, but then i had sex with Skinkie. He seem to know better who to sleep with to make it to the top. First I thought it was real lurve, but then I had to figure out I was only another puppet in his game.

You were the left hand puppet, the right is still classified.
