stuck underground

After I got the plunge (in milkman's level) and went outside the building, I got grabbed by some creature and pulled under ground. I defeated the creature severeal times, but every time it ressurects. I tried to escape while it is "dead", but couldnt find any exit from the room.

any suggestions..

Did that startle anyone else when they got pulled under? I jumped because it seemed pretty random to me, but I guess it makes sense and all.
